The DAC limits the 1616M. The AK5394A is still the lowest distortion ADC made. The 1616M implementation is very good. Opamp upgrades will help a lot. The oscillators look like they can be swapped directly for the Crystek's.
Maybe I'll attempt another mod (two smoking hulks so far. . . ) I have parts but the FPGA swap did not work.

Nice performance.
Can you show 10kHz (Victor's osc) with 192kHz sampling and graph up to 100kHz? I'm interested in higher harmonics and noise shaping behavior.
Richie, the 1/f noise corner is about the same, fig. 1. Will report back after having put my other 0404 in harms way, may be a while though.
Vacuphile, just curious why you chose the OPA1652 over LM4562/LME49720?
Is your 0404 PCI or USB Vacuphile?
It's USB. Strangely, I have the impression that the generator side doesn't really benefit from the better opamps, just the recording side.
Why not LM4562? Idle current. But I just might give it a try, although the 1602 just mentioned also seems a fine candidate, at lower Iq. Decisions, decisions.

Ok, that's for sure healthier than single rail 4,3V.
The price for this goodness was the need for an external DC power supply.
The 0404 doesn't run with just a USB cable like the 2i2.
He's talking about the 0404, the 0202 doesn't use an external supply. It has one less preamp and doesn't have phantom power.I thought 0202 had internal SMPS step-up.
Where do you connect external power?
Unfortunately, practically none of the modern interfaces today are USB powered and don't have this "goodness" inside... and their specs don't even come close.

I think you mean that the modern interfaces are USB powered, and also have made the design choice to run everything but the phantom power off of 5 v USB power.
I have a few of these gems and they are pale shadows of the 0404 USB performance-wise, as you say.

My bad. Yes, I wanted to mention that they ARE all USB powered and that there isn't anything that can match the 0404 performance wise. BTW, the phantom power also runs off the 5V USB, probably using a DC-DC converter or voltage multiplier circuit.

For acoustic measurements, lower specs will suffice. But when you also use the interface for measuring equipment like DACs and like, those USB devices often aren't good enough.

Yes, I agree. For equipment measurements I'm looking for better solutions. Right now I'm thinking E22 or possibly QA405 (when will it be released?).

It is not that clean any more! That ~75khz junk is the dxternal 48Vdc, switching power supply for the docking station. It is picked up externally, by just connecting the oscillator. The internal topology is full balanced, and do not see this common mode junk. But victors oscillator is single ended, and i had to upset the simmetry at the input connector..
one way to avoid it could be an external, screened single to balanced converter --or a linear power supply..
