On to the AVC…
Just installed the 23 step AVC from Intact/Slagle, and it sounds terrific! ZM recommended multiple times that I purchase the cheaper, $200 pair that you wire yourself, but ultimately the additional taps and clean, PCB approach won me over. What can I say, I’m a lazy neat freak 🙂
For hookup, I bridged CCW and CW on the board and took my output from buffer at the center pin of gain jumpers. Easy-peasy, and it’ll be a cinch to revert back in the future.
Next step is to install switch to the right of volume knob and get some on-demand gain from the AVC.
Thanks again to ZM for the idea!

Very nice, but at 600 dollar price level, I'm going Iron turtle. I agree on the simplifying wiring by getting the more expensive one. What sort of gain can it be wired for? 6 dB and 12 dB? Please report once listen to and set up how you want it.

Yeah, if I had it to do all over again, I'd just start with the Iron Pumpkin. That said, I have a few other pre's I can try this in, so the 'small' size is nice for that. You can wire it for 3,6,9, etc.

Nice!!!! 😀 😀

Fixed that for ya!

While waiting for a switch to arrive, I played around with getting 9db of gain out of the AVC. My source output impedance is around 10R, and I tried going direct to AVC this time. Sounds really great, though I still prefer Iron Pre buffer in mix. Either way, the slagle iron does gain nicely.

Be careful Cody. Next thing you know your little one will want to attend BAF to meet ZM. 🙂
He has been spending more time in my office / listening room since the amplification chain has been all ZM gear... 😀

Oh heck yes! You can be doing all sorts of cool things with that. I had been debating about doing the same with my Iron pre with the 200.00 basic units, but seeing yours I can see if I were to do it I would want the same thing you chose.
Yes the other would work, but your version would make hook up extra simple for someone like me. Easily worth the extra cost.

It really is a great piece of gear. If your source impedance is decently low, you could just throw this thing in a box and call it done. I tried running it directly from my source and wired for 9db of gain. Sounded awesome! It’s made me rethink how to configure my little collection of preamps.
it is always better with buffer in front, no matter what Rout of source is
only if source Rout is in range of up to 20R and interconnects are really short and benign, you can omit buffer
