Wayne's BA 2018 linestage

here it is, but make it on own risk

no reason it would not work flawlessly right off the bat, but it also could ask for some taming

edit:

you id mention balanced inputs, I did this with original schematic from post #1, where input is strictly SE

can't remember where iteration with Bal input is posted

Last year I saw Zen Mod scheme of X-ed Wayne Line Preamp and drew it in KiCad.
Yet I could not drew a decent layout so I decided I will try again someday in future.
But X-ed scheme look pretty in my opinion and so I felt a big urge to post it.. again. 😀

New design seems to be working! Voltage is set and line out offset is 2.2mV. Now all that is left is bench testing it to see if I need to relocate the power supply further away.....

I mistakenly ordered the Y-grade 2SK209’s with an IDSS of 1.2-3ma. Now both the BL and GR’s are sold out from Digikey and Mouser. Can I use these parts?

Cheers,
Andy

So it seems a generous donation of correct grade BL fets will solve my problem! Must send the donator something nice in return now or some day. Anyone know what 6L6 likes besides audio?

What does a DIY audiophile like, anyways? Is the hobby all-consuming or is there room for other interests? Wine and beer are good companions for the listening part, coffee for the work part. But surely there must be more. But an aeroplane is too expensive a gift... best wait to see if he includes a bill.

In the meantime, I have started working on the preamp. I have assembled the Galaxy 388, and behold: there is just enough room for everything. Pic shows case with UMS base plate and Gaz’s PSU board. Cap included to check if there is enough vertical room, and there is. Smooth.

Currently soldering the Glassware Frontpanel for attenuation and source selection. Got some Modushop knobs to go with it. Needed to drill larger holes (0,5mm larger), and they fit snugly. Next up is PSU, and then some metalwork.

Maybe just as well getting my soldering skills up to speed with a soft start, before doing the JFETs. Looking forward to that!

Plan is to put in the supperreg set up for 18 volts once everything else is working, there is room and I have them, so why not.

Even though my JFET issue is solved, I would love to hear the tech behind what happens when using too low an IDSS. Less current through the CCS means what for latter stage(s)? Less gain? Less bias?

This is my first preamp. My poweramp had and still has some hum issues, so excited to see if I can get this one quiet. Going to need to come back to the forum once wiring time. This will be a good arena for learning, and I hope to put that learning to use in future projects. Thanks Wayne!

Cheers,
Andy

A bit of late night progress in a moment of solitude. Managed to finish the Glassware Frontpanel, drill and mount it. And those knobs don’t look too bad imho. Misses should be pleased, or ar least not displeased. It is a balancing act, from transistors to wifes. Best not get either to hot in the negative sense. Positive sense hot is good though. Maybe the end result makes so beautiful music my hobby becomes an afrodiziac. One can only hope.
