Wayne's BA 2018 linestage

Hi,

I just finished by Wayne’s BA 2018 linestage. It is an excellent preamp. To my personal taste, it sounds better than Nutube B1 Korg with Aleph J. Big thanks to everyone who contributed in this project.

I would like to achieve the highest possible channel separation in my system.
Current setup: Denafrips Ares II DAC -> Wayne’s Linestage -> 2 monoblocks Alpeh J.

The Wayne’s preamp comes with one power supply (VRDN designed by Mark Johnson ). The ground for both channels is common. My idea was to build another VRDN to separate the grounds and achieve better separation.
Volume control has full channel separation too - VCU Hi-End MUSES® Micro Volume Control Board from Academy Audio.

I checked my DAC and left & right channel grounds are interconnected (I just check the resistance on the RCA outputs)…

My questions is, if it makes any sense to build another VRDN if both channel grounds are interconnected in the DAC?

Thanks.

Hello Decek,

I've built seperated PSU for left and right channel (in one case). Don't know,
if it makes a big difference. I don't think so. I also wanted maximum channel separation.
You can discuss this - but ground meets always anywhere....

Beautiful symmetry. Actually, the same thing came to my mind when I first saw the circuit. Did you build it? How does it sound?

Sadly I didn't move futher than a scheme.
There was attempt to make a pcb layout but I wasn't happy how it started.
Definitely will try again but later when layout Muse returns. :)
And to tell you the truth I also hope someone will do X-ed layout before me.
More and more people start to use free soft like KiCad.
Jeff Young would be happy. :)

Hi,

Very nice build.

Thanks for the info.

I am so happy with the sound having just one PSU that I will not make another PSU.:)

Cheers.

One step further along the way. Gaz’s PSU finished, and fired up without faults on first try, and adjusted to 18 volts flat. Measurements later. Very cool job to do, and kudos to Gaz for a great job on making the PCB and sharing with the community.

Hi
Just mulling over the idea of the X-ed layout, ZM passed a comment in post 1535 “here it is, but make it on own risk.no reason it would not work flawlessly right off the bat, but it also could ask for some taming”
Noticed that R23 and C4 are left out in the high output version (KSC 2690 & KSA1220) and aren’t shown on RainfallSkys version, post 2196, which have the lower output devices. Is there any reasoning behind this?

I drew it with higher output transistors in mind but named all transistors KSA992/KSC1845 for ease of starting and then forgot. )

I've just completed my BA2018 preamp build, and I am very impressed with it so far. It sounds very clear and detailed, and will be my main preamp.
It was a fun learning experience, since it was my first time do any chassis work (drilling out holes, cutting a hole for IEC power module, ext.)
It is dead silent, even with my ear against my speakers (Boston Acoustics T830, 90Db/w/m sensitivity) much quieter then my B1K and ACP, and even Elekit tu-8500
I used the super regulator from the store and powering it with +/-24v. I also included AM Audio "Le Pacific" phono stage in the chassis so it has a integrated phono stage, which I am also pretty impressed with. Even though it is in the same chassis with the PSU and transformer, it is silent, will with no hum, and it sounds very nice.

It won't be sitting on top of the power amp permanently, I just put it there for testing, and for a picture :)

I'm not finished, but it sound sooo good!

Haha. My ba-18 is fully working, sounding and tickling my f4.
It tickles so good that, except for vanity-cultivation, I won't really need the CineMags...
Still missing are the implementation of the final relay-attenuator, and the final front-plate... (think mighty-ZM-lenco-logo :D )

porn follows soon

unfortunately, I'm forced to leave the build for the next two weeks, so I'll have to hang around overhere a little more...
