What's wrong with the kiss, boy?

buy any decent 2x100Klin (either Alps or lucky Alps clone or some of those AllIsInMyHead linked to) , shunt wiper to gnd with 33K metalfilm and you're there

OK, dumb again....what's with 33K metal film to ground? I should solder a 33k to wiper and take to ground? besides wire that is already there going to Iron pre board I suppose?

Two wipers, @ 24 hrs per wire, 48 hrs....😀

On the subject of "more iron, more better", has anyone tried the IronPre
with an amp with an input transformer (say F6, M2, SissySIT, SIT3, etc)?

Dennis

I'm wrapping up M2X mono blocks and will be trying with Iron (and Waynes)... ZM already give some sort of green nod to Iron+Iron but I can't tell if it was jokester or not! Definitely gonna see for myself. ASAP. Will report back of course. I've been testing the M2Xs with the B1K and it sounds fab on some cheap not to sensitive test speakers I picked up... But I'm holding pronouncements until it's in the main system.

Pick me! 😀

Iron Pre with SissySIT is pretty fabulous, IMHO.

I've got it hooked up to M2 right now. Just moved it from Aleph J, where it is great I might say! Cant wait to complete Sissysit.

I can say that at first, very laid back. Almost subdued for lack of better term. As M2 heats up, better and better. Getting more transparent than at beginning. very nice effect.

As for Zen, he can speak for self, but....he is big on Iron pre/Iron Turtle. Add that to fav First Watt M2,
and I will bet he was not joking.

I've always used the ladder pots off ebay. I've wondered about the muse, but dont really know and havent heard one. I think zenmod has something similar/same in signature, blog or somewhere. But if he has been there and this autoformer has his eye, I'm figuring this is best way.

I see a balanced Iron Turtle in both of our futures is short story. But for now this thing is very good sounding to demonstrate principal that "more iron, more better.

Oh, and I wired the one channel to selector pot, see pic

Russellc

just tell me - what's that big black NTC being connected to?

I hope not to selector switch ...... I already see something burned and I'm not sure that I'll take care of that at least for 72 hrs .....

old trick for re-dressing linear pot to better-than-factory-made-log

shown on few reputable sites around

point is that linear pots are usually having better tracking low down , so why not

The CL-60 goes to the small white terminal block, then to ground.

As to 33k resistor, here If I were going to impliment on these temporary pots, I would just solder 33k to wiper, along with wire already there and just take it to ground?

Maybe I should add it to volume pot with CL-60,
Hmmmmm.

general character of gadget itself counts, not what's inside

though, if you ask me , more Iron you have in entire chain, the better ; reason why I'm not using OPT (with sand amps) is that I'm lousy and ignorant for making them and so there is really not dilema - between paying for some or not using them at all

believe me, I'll use them in case that I know how to actually make (design) them, and then I would pay someone to wind them for me

anyway, there are several guys around, having my Iron in Iron Pumpkins and then Cinemag Iron in my amps - completely happy

and some of them are using big ole Tannoys, in boxes designed by me - with that tricky tweet autoformer made aircore big as hat

so, that's one place where I avoided Iron, actually

:devily:

read this :Better Volume (and Balance) Controls ESP - A Better Volume Control

edit: correction of 33K value I did mention; that's what I'm using with one Black Beauty 250KLin ( in one of my small boxes), while for 100KLin I'm finding 18K as shunt most convenient

That's some sweet reading. Right up there with your LIghtspeed doc. Love it.

So in terms of Iron Pre—Wiper -> 33K -> ground? Or wiper -> 33K -> Wiper pad on Iron Pre? Or as Russell was asking is it an additional wiper -> 33K -> ground, leaving the wiper connection to Iron as is? I've been using 50K alps blue velvets... Would like to mess around and see/hear what's what.

Agreed!

I am not sure 100% what you want to try, but per ZMs note previously and my review of the article, you'd do this with a linear pot. ZM recommends a 100k linear pot with the 33k (edited to 18k) resistor - that jives with the ratio in the article. I'm sure if you're talking about using the 50k Blue Velvet audio taper with this mod. Still, it would be cool to see what it does. If I misread/misinterpreted ZM's recommendation, the article, or your post - apologies. My brain is full after trying to sort a whole other DIY situation. 😀

I think I'll wait for others to report some results before I try to think again. :joker:

The bell just rang - I think the universe is trying to tell me that I might have a tough time with a pre-amp chassis - it came with wine.
