"WHAMMY" Pass DIY headphone amp guide

the only negative thing i found with the whammy, is a little low gain for me in my setup.. So i use a DAC and preamp before the amp. A fetaudio DAC with AD1855 dac and a Aleph P1.7 preamp.
OP amp wise i went for the AD823. and i must say it's wonderfull.

I found the AD823 a little rough and raspy round the edges. The AD746 on the other hand, like wow you should really try that one!!!

I have just finished WHAMMY with additional functions E.g. input/output selector,OLED display controlled by micro controller. It's sound wonderful, actually the sonic performance is really depends on the opamp I put in the circuit. So, I would like to put some pictures here.😛
P.S. Thank to Wayne for the contribution of this wonderful headphone amp.

That's excellent. You did all the things I wanted to do with mine, but have been too lazy to actually begin 😀. Specifically, a micro-controller to select 2 different inputs via relays, with auto-selection if one channel is silent and a manual override. Maybe I will get to work on it one day, but currently I am using a separate switch box. The OLED display is taking even further than I had planned. Great work!

By far the best of the 5 different headphone amps I have built. I also think the OPA2134PA is the best sounding standard DIP, reasonably priced opamp. You may never feel the need to change it.

If you eventually get adventurous, want to test your soldering skills and are willing to experiment with SOIC adapters, the OPA1612AID is my favorite for sheer listening pleasure. The OPA6156ID a close second if you prefer a more "studio monitor" analytical type of sound.

Can't agree more. I've been through 14 other opamps in the WHAMMY with long listening sessions and checklists; the OPA2134PA is the best monolithic I've tried. Some of the more expensive ones are close and some, but usually a greater price. The Burson and Sparkos Labs are worth checking out, as they are both easily a step above IMHO what you get in ANY of the monoliths.

Thank you everyone😀

Beautiful Whammy Tanwa!

Have you guys tried the OPA2107 or the OPA627 yet?

Yes, I have tried OPA627 and use it for now with WHAMMY. You can see in the picture. the sonic performance is very good.
Anyway, in my opinion, we can use a lot cheaper opa2134 to get the same sonic character with tiny down side.

For the toroid on the side, what else are you using there? I've been contemplating a similar mode but putting the transformer in a separate enclosure (basically 2 of the same Galaxy boxes that are the standard Whammy build).

I'd love to hear about how you put together the switching relays and the front panel display too.

Have anyone tried 2x AD797 in the whammy? i have a bunch of this in some part bin here. But i don't got any adapter boards just yet.

Would like to but I tried the AD8599 which is kind of the dual version, and it was very decent, clean accurate and fast, however the 627's were better for me.

Would like to hear more of the Muses 01/02 especially the bi-polar 02. A pair of Muses03's might be the ultimate Jfet 627 killer but the cost for two 03's is more than any discrete offering

In the control compartment I put the main tranny and the control board.
Control board include the small PSU for controlling circuit, the micro-controller which is Arduino nano. and power relay for on/off the main transformer. from control board is wired to display, relay output and input board and front panel switch.
I put some pictures for you. cheers 🙂
