Wayne's BA 2018 linestage

It sings!!
Sound is good - just a bit of noise - expected laying on the counter like this.
Just waiting for enclosure and a few parts to finish. IMG_4145.JPGIMG_4146.JPG

Now that there are multiple options for building a preamp, I was wondering if anyone can review/compare the BA3fe, Whammy, Wayne’s line stage and ACP+. I have and use the Korg B1, original B1 buffer, and BA3 front end. I also have the boards and parts to build Wayne’s line stage but haven’t had a chance to build yet. The Korg is wonderful. It displays all the beauty that a 300b amp does. It’s only sin is that it glosses over just a tiny bit of the micro detail - those tiny ethereal whispers that pop out of background. But it gets all the musically important details totally right. It is relaxed but exciting at the same time and you can listen to it forever - no fatigue. The original B1 is quite amazing and also just nigh of perfect. Dead quiet. It’s only shortcoming is absolute, macro dynamics. It still does much better than any other unity gain “passive”, but compared to some other good preamps, it is just a tiny bit restrained in impact. The BA3fe I keep trying to like. Initially it impresses, but shortly thereafter it starts bothering me. It took a while to identify exactly what was “wrong” but it has a hardness in the treble range and slight lack of differentiation in treble that makes the hardness worse. I have tried different cables and the hardness is always there. Anyway, I’m tempted to order the whammy and acp+ to try as a preamp, but having some basis for comparison or some descriptors for each would be very helpful. I primarily use F6 as amp, and sometimes rotate in Aleph 3 and Music Reference rm9ii. Thanks.

I can't really comment on a direct comparison of all of them. However, to potentially address your issue with the BA3, I'd suggest adjusting P3 (=> the distortion profile) to your preference. If you've already done that... then who doesn't need another pre-amp? Have fun with whichever you choose. 😀

I have built the B1 korg and the ba 2018. The ba 2018 is far superior for my taste dynamic, insane imaging and a lot of detail. Sound stage is very impressive. I noticed that it seems to be a little subdued in the high frequencies. It could be due to my build but it is nothing that bothers me. I much prefer to have it hooked up versus going straight to my DAC. Soldering the SMD jfets is a pain in the butt. A lot of people have issues with it. I suggest grabbing extras. they're cheap so you want to get about 12 so they all come from the same batch.

B1 korg is thinner sounding, very detailed for tube amp. Does not have a lot of bass. Imaging is pretty decent just not as good as the ba 2018. High frequencies are nice on it.

I just recently finished (aside from a few small things) my BA2018. The goal with the chassis was to build it out of materials from around the garage. The metal bottom is from an old router stand that had been retired, the walnut front and sides are scraps from a guitar project and the thin ply top and back are from an old dresser that I dissassembled. The wood supports brackets pointer on the walnut knobs etc are scrap from an old cabinet door.

It sounds nice. If anyone has any constructive criticism, please let me know. It is my first time building a preamp from scratch. Also, any little tweaks etc would be good to know. I intend to get a different potentiometer, something with resistors instead. If anyone has a suggestion please let me know. Looking for something with a 1/4" stem or larger.

This build is really outlandishly cool! It looks almost „dematerialized“ (in the positive way) with everything (even the knob’s shaft extension!) in wood.
Really cool.
For an attenuator, I‘d go for allo‘s attenuator (good on budget, recommended by salas), or elma‘s relay-jig (sophisticated, nasty on the budged—pm me if interested), or aim even higher and go for a tranny-volumecontrol… (iron turtle or so)!
