Valhalla was Linn's first attempt at a electric power regenerating board, it is quite good, but tends to "push" noise back down your power lead and affects other components connected to the same source ...
Origin Live's kit is very much better ... ,

The trick is on the stylus tip.
I recently used a VDH with boron cantilever and special diamond tip.... and it is so much better then my actual benz thing.

I agree.GlidingDutchman said:
The bronze is over-priced. It has the same stylus as the blue - only difference is the tapered cantilever. I have a Rondo Blue and it is a gem. Features a Fine Line stylus which extracts the best fro the LP grooves.
If you have cash to spend on a Bronze then you can rather jump to the Kontrapunkt B...
I know my Ortofon MC cartridges by heart! 😀

I rebuilt my Ariston RD-11S last year ( on another thread http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/show...330&perpage=25&highlight=Ariston&pagenumber=2) and I replaced my motor and power supply with one out of a Linn Axis. I initially used a Valhalla but decided I wanted an easy way to get both speeds. The Axis is a better design than the Valhalla and has features that eventually went into the Lingo. My Ariston motor was really noisy so I didn't really want to waste time trying to service it. I never liked that clutch mechanism on the pulley. I also replaced the chassis/subplatter with a Linn item because my bearing was leaking oil. I've been looking for a Linn platter but the price, even a used one plus shipping is very cost prohibitive especially since the orignal platter is free and works fine once it is machined. I corner braced the plinth and refinished it in piano black lacquer. I built my own armboard out of 10mm acrylic which stud mounted to the subchassis. It holds a Rega 250 with OL mod and a AT-F3OCC MC cartridge. I bought the Ariston second hand in 1981 and used it until I got my LP12/Ittok/AT-160ML in 1989. It pretty much sat after that with very little use. Since rebuilding the Ariston my Linn has been sitting.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Upgrades
All reports that I have indicate that the Bronze, is a very quiet cartridge with regard to surface noise, and being somewhat better in that regard, as well as soundwise, than the Blue, for a ZAR R1300.00 odd difference.
A Kontrapunkt B on the other hand is a ZAR R4500.00 difference almost .... , that big a jump I am not prepared to make, then I'd rather save and get a "Blue Angel"

What I am doing starting to save from scratch, just bought Paradigm Studio 20's, and now the Ariston RD 11S, the "piggy bank" is now well and truly "broke" 🙂, but, I now have the basis on which I can build a very good turntable ... '😀'

Fair enough...
On the other hand, and please do bare with me as I have found this too good to be true until I tried one myself - a DENON DL110. I have even chatted to mr van den Hul about the stylus design. It features an ultra slim, fine-line stylus that brings the best from the groove with the lowest surface noise. And at only +/- R2000 it is a steal! Check the Wantitall online shopping site for the item. I am surely going to get me one as a back-up.
Other great MC's are:
ZYX R50 Bloom
Audio Technica OC-9
Shelter 301
Benz-Micro Ace
Ortofon Salsa
Of coarse all at nice prices!

The ZYX R50 Bloom is high on my list of possible cartridges, the Audio Technica OC-9's - are they still being made?
Not familiar with the Shelter or Benz Micro Ace ...
The Denon is also a possibility ...

Give Geoff Fairlamb a call at StereoMusicality and tell him Dewald reffered you to him regarding a ZYX. Excellent cartridge for the price! Highly recommended.
You are in Bloem right? Try and visit Jandre Henning in Bloem - he's got a R50 Bloom on his Rega P5. Get in touch with him via ViSA under "Jandre". Great friend of mine!

The DENON DL110 is a budget cart.
I can not see the comparison with a Benz Micro Ace ???
I have one DL160 and it can not be compared.... The Benz belongs to another level...

The DL110 is a very good cartridge from a technical point of view. Very good construction and materials used - I know as I looked inside! I have seem many MC cartridges' insides and thus would not make such a statement if I didnt knew what I was saying.
The DL110 is much underrated and overlooked.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Upgrades
Never distorts... I chose it because of the stylus type Special Elliptical Solid Diamond; Cantilever: Aluminum; and also because of the Frequency Range: 20 to 50000 Hz...
But the DENON amplifies the size of some instruments bringing them to the front.... Bass is Soooo detailed but....
When I heard a VDH frog... I knew I needed some more spatial presentation and a little less frontal perspective.
Now I have a Medium output Benz ACE and the soundstage can not be compared.... (The VDH was much better due to it´s boron cantilever and special stylus tip)

It is a very good cart (the best in it´s price range)..... My DL160 is fantastic... it tracks perfectly and pics no noise from the vinil.GlidingDutchman said:

Hi Java
You come to hang wiff da cleva okies now....
Re Rega arm hole and 28mm.... The Michell VTA adjyuster for Rega arms has an OD of................................................................................................................................ 28mm.
I have a barely used one for sale for cheap, check my site for latest news letter.
Re arms, buy any unwired rega with confidence. Rewiring is a doddle (or can be done for small fees). I stock Incognito and stock various types of cardas for internal and single run clips to RCA (affordable). Also keep Cardas connectors to fit the base of the Rega and convert it to a DIN/JES type set up like Linn/SME etc etc.
WRT Valhalla, yes it pumps a lot of junk back down but there are solutions that will also prolong its life/reliability and kill the junk. (Not a filter).
With many goiung DC used valhallas can be had for fair sums these days and it is a nice option if used with care.
A good big tranformer is my current preferred AC supply but no 45 rpm...
Fitted a Sumiko Blackbird to a OL silver on a OL DC Linn on Sunday. Sounds funtastic and So does a EVOIII in a Rega arm btw. The OL arms though sonically good I have mixed feelings about. Up close in the flesh they really are a little crude in machining etc IMO and I have seen several rust after a few years...
I can hardly wait for the Funk ANTI. (Funks K Drive would probably work on the RD11 too.)

By my calculations, 1 1/8 inches equals 28.575mm, which is close enough ... '😀' , a very neat solution too, I might add, was really not looking forward to go looking for a suitable piece of aluminum, then go bother a mate for the use of his lathe, to make an adapter ...

Just missed a Rega RB300 that needed rewiring ... , but have been rather busy lately ... , <sigh> , knew I should have gone and looked at it as soon as I heard of it, but other commitments dictated otherwise ... '

Well, at this stage, I am flat broke, what with new speakers, and now the Ariston, then my car yesterday morning started making some very ugly sounds, '

But with the Michell VTA adjuster, I can at least put the RB 300, that is on my Rega Planar 3 on there ...
Oh, the Ariston looks, well great, (picked it up at the post office minutes ahead of closing time) , and would look even better if it had an arm mounted on it ... '😀'
Ah well, that's how this cookie has crumbled so far ... '🙄'

Yup, a whole lot of real experience here and practical know how from a worldwide pool.
How thick is that ally armboard? You may need a washer of a few mm as the VTA nut is about 5 or 6 mm deep but still easy enough to do that if needed.
Transformer of 100VA was good , I am using 200VA now, armageddon is even bigger I think.
Can use same 110V transformer to feed a valhalla 110 V input and lots of problems dissapear on the valhalla..... Somehow I like the raw dynamic of the transformer and cap solution though.
Cars are a necessary expense account on wheels where we are but we can not have it all I guess. Good luck on that one.

Will do, thanks,
The "Geddon" used something like a 400VA transformer. The isolation transformer for the Valhalla is a good idea. I'm running an isolation transformer on my Axis supplied Ariston. It's safer too. The only thing you have to be careful with the Valhalla in the 110V situation is the original pulley on motor you are using. 110V is 60Hz, the Valhalla puts out 50Hz signal so you have to match the correct pulleys.
