Geez,i knew you'd ask me that !I will have to try and search for it again.I had the places email address, but my 'C' drive died suddenly a couple of weeks ago before i could save my emails,my address book, all my bookmarks etc. All my contacts lost.I have a feeling it was a company that also sells on Ebay, but dont let that put you off, they were good to deal with.I'll get back to you.
Think i found it, although i cant see the disc mod listed. You could contact Stuart and ask him about the availability of just the ceramic disc(comes with a little bottle of black oil)

Hi
Today I received an envelope from Stuart with the spindle pad.
It is not ceramic but PTFE... I believe it can be even better but I have a small issue:
The pad is so small, I believe I will have some trouble fitting it on top of the large captive ball....

Also, the spindle fits so tight into the shaft that the platter takes more than 5 minutes spinning until it reaches the bottom... How can I be sure the disc is in place ?
Has someone some experience with this issue ?
Regards
Ricardo

Hi
Following this thread ideas, I was wondering if I could replace my RD80 springs by some Linn Black springs I found in eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=120304602844
Would you please advise on this modd ?
Are these springs suitable for my TT ?
Regards
Ricardo

RCruz, sounds to me like you have too much oil down the spindle hole.Be careful with that black oil supplied with the pad.I found it a little too viscous and my TT had trouble spinning up at speed.I actually use sewing machine oil without any problems.

I was wondering if I could use Syntethic Motor Oil instead like Mobil F1.... Can you advise on that ?
Ricardo
might be interesting to use synthetic oil as it has teflon in it 😀. It may be too viscous though 🙁

As you said the black oil is too thick, I thought I might use thin oil.
Can you suggest any particular brand or viscosity ?
This has been one of my major concerns and still have some doubts.

As far as oil goes, I am undecided, should be no problem using synthetic oils ... , none that I can see anyhow ...
My take on the oils viscosity bit is, that if your table's main bearing is tight, use a lighter oil, if it is loose, use a heavier oil ...
Seen w90 oil recommended a time or 2 , which I think is a bit "heavy" , but then as per above ...

It seems this is still a bit of a black art. 🙄
My bearing is very tight..... the platter takes 5 min to reach the bottom and it must be spinning otherwise it would take ages.
Maybe I should choose a thinner oil.
Ricardo
Yes that's the problem with my bearing too.Very tight and takes a while to settle down to the bottom of the spindle shaft.
I've tried various types of oils with varying viscosity.I even tried adding a teflon motor oil additative, but again caused the platter to have difficulty spinning at correct speed.I now just use Singer sewing machine oil,but because i have a ceramic pad at the bottom of my spindle shaft i add two or three drops of the black oil+the sewing machine oil, enough so that the level of oil is just above the point where the platter spindle touches the ceramic pad. This seems to work well for me.

I will try Singer oil.!!!
Regarding the level of oil inside the shaft, I still do not fully understand your explanation.
Does the shaft have any level indicator (arrow ? line ?)
I believe the bottom must be full, but there must be oil also in the vertical walls of the shaft, otherwise it will heat up.
Regards
Ricardo
Unfortunately there is no oil level indicator. Its a case of "suck it and see".
If you underfill the well the sub platter will drop down quite quickly.
If you overfill, the excess oil will bubble out the top as you push the sub platter down, and you create too much drag on the spindle.
It really depends on how much space there is in your bearing well between the top bush and the bottom of the bearing and i dont think anyone can you a definitive answer on the exact amount of oil required.
For me, i add the oil to what i "guesstimate" is about right, then let the subplatter lower itself down.I look for the subplatter to initially stop and sit about 5- 10mm above the top plate before it then lowers itself down.
For the record the owners manual i have says to "add 5ml of oil into the main bearing well and allow shaft to descend slowly -do not use force."
