Second one goes fast! Great work...
Time permitting you'll be there in no time ;-).
Every little helps 🙂 Front baffle is now glued and clamped down, 80 holes predrilled for the mounting screws... If time is available tonite I will start to prepare the internal wiring 🙂

Took the first line outside in the sun to route excess flange materials off and also put in on the scale. 27,5kg (60lbs 10oz) with base on.

Nice! The photo reminds me of something on Easter Island or Stonehenge 🙂

Hehe, I should build a complete 5-channel setup and place it all in my front yard, that would be a "proper" Stonehenge!

Started on the wiring, have my plans set for tomorrow and hope to start mounting the drivers. If all goes well sound will be produced by the end of this week 😉 Still waiting for the UMIK-1 test mic, ordered on the 15th and was in stock... Once that is in the house and I can run REW the truth will follow

Good thing the farmer that mow everything outside the hedge have a bigger mower then I do 😛. Our house is on the very edge against farmland, the neighbours are to the sides 🙂. Since my home theatre room is in the basement I can pretty much go as high on the volume as I wish without bothering my surroundings. Even the rest of the household dont loose sleep over it 😉

Despite being down with fever and a really sore throat progress have been made... The second array is producing sound.... Cabinet lack top/bottom plates and rear baffle, otherwise complete.
The miniDSP UMIK-1 also arrived todaybut no time to play with it yet.

Great reading through your build, looking very good. Also, am envious of anyone who has a dedicated home theatre room [one day, I too will have one 🙂 ] ... BTW, what projector are you using?

If your using REW, remember to download the unique calibration file for your Umik-1 from the miniDSP site.

BMS - thanks 🙂 Yes, calibration file for the mic have been downloaded and I am currently reading myself up a little on the REW software. Any helpful tips appreciated 🙂

Late 2012 we got ourselves a new house and we had in the basement a surplus room with no immediate use for - so a home theatre room it became 🙂 About 20sq.m in size, with concrete walls/ceiling and no windows. Perfect starting point 😉 I am using a Sony VPL50VW Pearl projecting onto a 265x150cm screen (About 110")

REW is fairly straight forward to use, having some very nice features for use with the miniDSP products or more in-depth measures of your system. Plug-in the Umik-1 first then open REW, it'll ask you for the calibration file automatically 🙂

That's a very nice PJ you have. I currently have a Panasonic PT-AE4000 with 80" screen. Originally had a 106" screen, however, being in the living room the setup was to awkward and a compromise was made... Don't know how much work you've done on the HT room, if you ever look at doing a material surround for the PJ screen [Bat cave style..] look at black Devore Velvet, one of the least light reflective materials you can use. Great for black levels and boosting on-screen contrast... 🙂

BMS - the first room we put the PJ in had windows on the whole side wall (facing west) and it was only usable during mid winter (Sun down from 5pm). We moved into this house in dec. 2012 so it worked nicely untill spring - which was a nice incentive to get the dedicated room sorted. I have attached an image of it. Its not a bat cave but kept fairly dark, ceiling is black paint, walls are dark grey. Soffits yet unfinished, might use red or black molton for those. (Molton is a fabric used in stage construction/scenes etc, very low on light reflection) I will check into Devore Velvet, thanks for the tip 😀 I intend to incorporate absorption panels for this room where needed, part of the reason for getting the umik-1.

The arrays are as I type this breaking in, they have been going since yesterday morning. Plans for today is to get the rear baffle adjusted in size and start fabricating the base plate that will screw onto the slate rock. I have many plans for the weekend and time is short but I hope to have #2 sealed up by the end of this week 🙂

Looking very good and can't wait to read how you get on with the arrays 🙂

Those soffits could be made into effective bass traps, remove the side panels [left open] and stuff with Rockwool or Acoustic foam and cover with fabric like you intend... Found a nice site about room acoustics with links to DIY absorbers / diffusers etc.

Sure you'll have fun with REW and miniDSP for both the arrays and room acoustics 🙂

The soffits are today closed but unfinished so point of no return is still ahead of me 🙂 While closed they are not hollow as 50% of the internal volume is filled with glass insulation. 60cm wide, full height, then 60cm open (around the downlights) then 60cm filled again. The intention is to prevent resonance from this closed volume. I can adapt as you suggest to make it a bass trapout of it. Sound treating the room is definitely on my to-do list 🙂 Main idea is to have absorption in front of the listening position and diffusion at the rear, but that is as far as my knowledge on the matter extends hehe..

The first step is to get useful data out from REW 🙂

Just a quick update, second column is now complete. Base glued and set aside to cure and the slate is drilled/prepared for the mounting screws 🙂
So now both are sealed and ready to go to work 🙂. Havent had much time available so no images yet but there will be some more later 😛

Wow, you've been working overtime!

I know, when things are close to the end... we want to finish as soon as possible to see the full impact.

Can't wait for you to relate to us how amazing your arrays are! 🙂 I foresee a great big smile on your face when you fire both of them up!

Yeah I tend to get a little single minded towards the end of a project and also highly impatient 🙂

Spent two hours with them yesterday evening browsing through my assorted media and all I can say is "wow" 😀 So articulated and "airy". Wispher quiet when required but brutally direct when asked to - "if its on the recording you`ll hear it" kinda 😛
While they are no subs nor gave the impression that they were trying to be, bass is absolutely present and direct. Watched a few movie trailers also and for HT-use these will simply rock I am sure 😀

Happy? You bet!!
Now starts the process of nailing the details of the setup and hopefully share some usefull data plots 🙂
Anyone with tips for appropriate test (music) material?
