To add to this, I've found that if bass is the reason you are interested in going with the Ultra, I personally don't think it should matter. The bass was surprisingly low and strong with the standard Manzanita and GRS woofer, much better than a lot of commercial gear I hear these days. In short, seems to me you should be fine with the standard Manzanita. But, of course, that's just my opinion. I was truly shocked by how much bass this relatively small open baffle produces. And I'd built and heard other OB speakers before.Erse is out of business. U.S. Coils makes a 20mh inductor but shipping can be expensive depending on where you live.
The Ultra is a big speaker. Even though it doesn't have a lot of depth it tends to dominate the room visually when it's out 3 or 4 feet from the wall. Or at least it does in my house as the rooms aren't all that big.
The stand mounted Manzi is far less overwhelming visually.
Good luck with your build. Please post photos!
@Carlp
If the above was addressed to me, I do prefer the standard size Manzanita.
I just found a place they are selling the Erse super Q 20mH, 16AWG for $20 a pop. Is the website legit ?? I’ve sent them an email to see if they will reply eventually…
I would rather build the passive x-over even if it offers less flexibility, let’s see if I can find the 20mH at a decent price, otherwise I’ll use my minidsp

Yes, it was mostly directed to you. Basically, though, I was just saying that for anyone who might consider the Ultra, just consider why you are thinking that way. If it's for bass, I'd try the plain Manzanita first.
As for the Erse 20mH, $20 would be a steal I think. But...that seems odd to me. Erse is out of business, so if it IS Erse, it is older stock. And the price before they went out of business was much higher than that I think. US Coils took over for Erse with inductors, and I think they were generally way more expensive than the $20 you mention. If they are legit I'd buy 'em in a second. Note if you find they are legit, let me know by PM (so I can buy some before the masses descend...just kidding, but I would like to know). The iron core version (always less expensive) is $27.20 at madisound (https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c...-a0RK1jwpzaQNRZkMVsUJZeUjo301pSGojWnRxyWsGjV6), which may not be bad, but I'm not a crossover designer so no idea if this is a good inductor to try).

Hmmm. Just noticed the one I posted above from Madison is 18ga, not 16ga.
Oh, and you and I have messaged, but for the rest, I did look into the company a little and it is hard to tell much about it, which is somewhat concerning. It's a new site according to one security site I checked and has had little traffic and is slow. But it seems to have a legit SSL certificate, which is better than not...

Parts express sells LP xovers which have suitable coils, one 18mH, one 21mH.
Check the schematics for details.
Prices are very reasonable, $20.98 per piece, reduced from $32.
So one can remove the coils and use them in the Manzi xover.
Worth considering.

Thanks a lot Stanislav, both can do the job 👍
I’m expecting an answer from another member tomorrow, if it doesn’t work I’ll probably buy a couple of them.

I have build active crossover versions of the original Manzie, the Ultra, the dual 15 and even the 18" coax.
Build the passive, it sounds better.

Yes, me, as I only use series xo in all my projects.
But my 2 sets of Manzanitas, regular and Plus, are quite different from the originals, I use different drivers for a start.
Check post #3297 to see the little one, and also the big one behind it.

Hi
I’ve bought the drivers so during the holidays I’ll be building the enclosure.
To respect John’s work and extract the most from the regular Manzanita, I’d like to build the model shown below with the front and back extensions. I prefer the look without the front extensions but if it’s an improvement I’ll add them. I’ll be using the GRS 15” since I can’t find the 12” anywhere.
Does anyone have a mechanical drawing or sketch with dimensions? Especially the wings (extensions). Also the little piece on top (back of baffle)
Thanks in advance.
Eric

The little top wing reminds me of the older JE Labs open baffle (pic below), it’s apparently important to have that top extension (wing)
It’s the reason I’m asking if someone has the dimensions of the above regular Manzanita.
Thanks

This should be based on the 15" Manzinita baffle.
Wings on the back.
If you need to keep the baffle narrow, the side wings can be installed behind the baffle, saving 1.5 inches in width. The wings will not be visible from the front. This works well, but wings on the sides is a little better and is the default choice. See below for this style of build.

To my knowledge there is no official blueprint of that version of the Manzi.
But ...
The first Manzi I put together didn't have published specs. John was at the Lone Star Audio Fest in 2007 demoing it and asked if anyone wanted to build one. A few of us said yes and he drew the crossover circuit and let us copy it.
He didn't give out dimensions of the baffle or wings. The only thing I had to go on were the photos of the speakers taken in the room. Luckily someone took front, side and rear photos. I made educated guesses based on the size of the woofer and tweeter.
Months later I found this thread which did have the dimensions. Compared my build to the official measurements and my build wasn't more than 1 inch off in any direction and almost dead on for many others.
It was just a matter of knowing the size of the woofer and the tweeter and comparing that to the baffle in the photo. It wasn't perfect but it was absolutely close enough.
Wish I had exact specs for you for this version but you can probably get it sounding great with educated estimates.
Good luck with your build and please share photos!
