What 'tech' do you see in the Sig225 that is an improvement over the RS225? I've seen nothing to indicate better performance than the RS225, and the RS225 was a standout both in the RS line, and at its pricepoint. It's a very well-proven driver.
Like most manufacturers, Dayton has a mixed track record with new drivers. The signature may be standout like the RS225 and RSS315, it may be a bit of a letdown like the Epique and Esoteric drivers were, or it may be just average like the DS drivers. At this pricepoint, I hope it is at least different enough in parameters to suit some different applications, more choice is always good.
As for the looks, I prefer the look of the Signature. But I don't find the RS drivers objectionable at all. Maybe if I were building speakers to use in staging houses for sale, I would prioritize looks. For listening, I'm much more interested in the performance. I suspect most feel the same way, otherwise we'd be swimming in designs using the HIVI M8n rather than the RS225.

I think this is where it stands. The RS series always had an excellent low-distortion motor, combined with a reasonably good paper or aluminum cone... not the best cone, but a reasonably good one.
At this point we are speculating, but it appears the Signature line has a state of the art cone. But from the description, the motor seems rather ordinary. Until one of these drivers is evaluated by a serious reviewer (Erin or HifiCompas), we just don;t know...

Hello .. no the inverted "cone" of the ND is different , it has no tech gadget where the VC meets the inverted dome ... maybe the same aluminium alloy foil and thickness but that says not much about the properties ... could be heat treated additionally to get rid of hidden tensions in the foil ... or they have glued two thinner foils together giving a sandwich structure!?

For instance I wonder who will be able to put on a new surround/edge on the CDC fake ceramic cone , it is probably to brittle to remove the old glue from the rim and you cannot center the coil properly , only by hand and some good luck!

The Signature 6.5" also slots really nicely into their category of speakers that work in smaller boxes and cross at 40hz ported with a giant subwoofer, or 80hz sealed (claimed by their website). Looks like it can cross easily up to 2.5k, fairly flat in spite of the bumps. The sensitivity is good. I'm much more curious about the subjective comparisons at this point, frankly. Or maybe an examination of it's failure points, in comparison with an equivalent in the reference series.
My quick head math says that the 4" can handle about 110dB SPL. I have to open VCAD and see what the excursion looks like, but I'm mostly surprised there isn't an 8" to go along with that. Or a tweeter. It's the 5.25 that looks kind of ugly to me. Maybe it's monitor material? It also looks loud, and meant to be matched with a bass or sub cabinet of some kind.

I don't know what math you're using, but the 4 inch version has a sensitivity of 86dB/W
(the datasheet sensitivity is per V, so we have to convert)
It can handle 40W theoretical max.
10*log(40) + 86 = 102dB
I would also find 110dB for such a simple design not very believable.
The real major PA brands already struggle to push that out of a 4 inch with a much higher Fs and BL.
The 8 inch version will do 10*log(100)+88 = 108dB
Also wouldn't make much sense at all that a 4 inch can outrun a 8 inch.
Just already the Sd is so much bigger.

It's the 80W max and the spec of 89.7 I was basing my head math on. 40W RMS on ~90 is closer to 105, but that's the stated spec, not what it does. We need someone to measure these to really know more. All I can speculate is what they're for.

Images and drawings of Signature appear to join the VC former to the cone just like ND. Seems like a consolidation of cone making process.

Based on mfg specs, it will reach xmax around 30w anyways. WinISD says this will give about 100.5db and I'm pretty sure that is 2pi (half-space).
That totally depends on your configuration and tuning (with BR).
This is just max theoretical SPL based on power.
In both cases THD and IMD is not being considered.
What do you wanna use this 4 inch for?
For pure midrange above 200Hz, see my calculation above.
If you want to use it as a small BR speaker, a standard 4 inch doesn't do much more around 96-100dB
This is pretty standard actually with 4mm xmax and a Sd of 56cm²

Exactly. I'd bet almost every (non-pro audio) 4" on Parts Express' site models about the same or even worse.
In a small 2-way like the Overnight Sensations it probably operates a lot like... the Overnight Sensations... with a different color cone, a little more sensitivity and a little less low end... and that's okay.
