Another corner array project

That leaves a visible glue line, so I will probably leave them after all, will wait until fastenings arrive to check

Wood will arrive in a week or so, consequently i decided to get the final ingredients in place.
The pictures show the mock up module with the back removed.
A piece of the felt i will use as padding/absorption is shown, obviously i cannot put this next to the driver at top and bottom, presumably everyone else had the same problem and it works OK?

I haven’t started building the speakers yet, but autumn is here with dark evenings so that’s likely soon.

I have mostly all the parts, I think!

At the end of the build i will need to connect up and EQ to suit.

This is a living room system so will have to be family friendly for various uses and users.

I have looked at Computer borne EQ such as audiolense, or simpler more user friendly miniDSP.

My current conclusion is that mini DSP with Dirac live is the path to choose, mini DSP DDRC-24

The inputs are a bit limited, soi need to sort out whats practical.

  • I have a Panasonic TV that seems to have SPDIF out which i think will feed all TV/films sound, although the specifications on both are limited. It feeds my current Sonos stuff.
  • It has analogue in on RCA for vinyl
  • It has a USB input, which i can connect for CD, computer feed etc
Streaming seems a whole level further up in their Flex series.

Does anyone have experience of the sound quality of these or other comments to offer please?

Many thanks

Mike

I really like miniDSP series.
But try to stay digital for cleanest sound.
The extra A/D~D/A conversions really degrade the sound.

That would make it hard for using the turntable.

What I like about the Flex is that you get a volume dial as well, which the DDRC24 doesn't have, so you would have to control the volume level within your TV, CD, computer, but no control over the turntable... you would have to run the app and control the volume from there.

Maybe you could get a small preamp for the turntable, and that one would connect to another input of your amp.

Many thanks for your thoughts Perceval.

The turntable is quite important for us because we have old records we like, and the array speaker system requires EQ for every source, hence the vinyl source will have to go ADC and back again, DAC, after EQ. it may have some losses/be less preferable but i see no alternative unless EQ can suddenly be done in the analogue domain.........

I understand the DDRC 24 has volume controllable, on the remote, but no visual indicator, but i am still learning......does the flex otherwise do the same but have a visual indicator as well?

I've had mixed feeling about the volume and remote with my 2x4 HD... with is the same as the DDRC24 but without Dirac.
Yep, it works, but for me, it just feels awkward.

Don't own a Flex series unit yet, so I couldn't tell about the visual indicator. It does show on the screen, from the website pics, along with input used and EQ preset selected. Is it valuable for you, setting up presets for HT or music, and having visual cue of the volume level? Only you can answer that.

Having read things carefully it looks as though in performance terms the flex and DDRC24 are identical, i would be pleased if the flex were better as the convenience appeals but its a couple £'00's more.............
That's my current intention unless others come to light while i build cabinets etc.......

I will soon be ready to cut material for the enclosures.

I have one last decision to make which is where the bottom goes in relation to the floor and ceiling.

I have decided to mount the enclosures on wall bracket/pivots so they can easily be turned in relation to the seats for tuning and so that they are really solidly mounted to the brick walls thus avoiding large and complex stands which would stick out into the room. These will screw into the top and bottom plates of the enclosures, so there needs to be a small space above and below the enclosure.

However, I have about 268mm to distribute either above or below the 25 line of drivers and the cabinet top and bottom plates.

Advice so far seems to be to mount as low as practical and leave the rest of the space above.

This probably means around even distribution of the remaining amount, 130mm above and below.

I would appreciate any further thoughts please.

I haven't completely forgotten that i am building a pair of corner arrays!
I cut all the vertical parts for the cabinets today, 8 side parts at the top of the heap, fronts and backs at the bottom, each 2400mm long at the moment, the whole stack weighs a bit...........each cabinet will weigh over 20kg, so with the drivers and wires maybe 30kg.....heavy but just a one man carry!
A bit of fettling and sanding but basically done.
Next to mark and cut the baffles, then the cell dividers, then assembly time........

And now i cut the baffles holes and the grooves on the reverse for the cell dividers, next to look at assembly...........but cutting the cell dividers accurately will probably be the most tedious job, i am thinking of a rough cut and a final trim to one template with the router, maybe!

People did mention the repetitive scale.......here is the result (last pic)of 52 cell dividers cut from rectangles. i glued up initially with 6 in place and insert the others when the sides are on, simply gluing 26 faces in one go is long!
