Budget Classic 3-way Discussion Thread

what i would do probally (EU)

tweeter: SB SB26ADC (50.64€)
mid: Faital 6FE125 (44.46€)
woofer: Faital 10FE330 (106€)
That particular midrange model isn't available at Parts Express (not sure if anywhere else in the U.S. might carry it).

Compare the FE10FE330 to the Peerless SLS 830669 12". The Peerless is 40% cheaper than the FaitalPro here in the U.S., it looks like they are about the same price in Europe.

Let's design for both. The Peerless is lower sensitivity, and might allow for lower sensitivity mids. Needs about 3 cu-ft, or about 90L approximately.

You know, this cheap (CA$34!) plastic 5" SBA is a good candidate for a mid in a budget 3-way. FR & dispersion looks pretty good out to 2.5-3 kHz. Theoretical SPLmax is ~105 dB at 500Hz. Might want to pressure-brace the magnet to keep the frame from vibrating too much.

I have a measurment mic and so, but i don't have time in the near future for building myself. But if someone in western Belgium or northern France build it but can't measure, i can help. I live in the region of Tournai (or Doornik in dutch) in Belgium.

For my setup it's not sensitive enough to use a passive crossover. I would need something arround 90dB/2.83v to match the woofer.

But for lower sensitive woofers this is not a bad choice for this.

Woofer, and tweeter look great. I assume the tweeter can cross at 2k, or lower. The mid has a little bump up high. I know that can be dealt with in the x-over, but something without that bump might be easier. Overall, I think a good start. How available are these drivers elsewhere?
I don't thinnk that bump is a big problem to be honest, but you could also try the 6FE200 8Ω that is 48.80€, it's very similar but without bump. But you will have to attenuate that driver more (should not be a big problem). Or maybe the 5FE100 (36.87€), altough i don't know if this driver will have enough power to go loud without much distortion. You will have to crooss that higher probally.

Th SB26ADC can be crossed low, arround 1000Hz even without a waveguide. But i would rather go for about 1800Hz to keep some more headroom. Troels did test it and so did Hificompas and this tweeter is a gem for it's price. Very low distortion to 1kHz, even on relative high volume and almost even in response on and off axis to about 15kHz. And even beyond that it's better than most tweeters i know. The Peerless tweeters mentioned above are good tweeters, but this one is a lot better for cheap.

That Peerless is good in a much bigger cabinet, but as we try to keep it reasonable small, this won't work. And for sealed (what the qts suggest) the Fs is not low enough, then you're better of with more expensive drivers like the SB34NRX75-6. With dsp you could fix that also, but that is not the purpose of this build.

@waxx - two more questions

What would you choose for a 12"? Does the 12FE330 work, it looks like it needs a much bigger cabinet than the 10"?

SB26ADC is awesome for the price. What do you think of a smaller 21mm SBA tweeter, any advantage in terms of dispersion?

Yes, I know the smaller teeter has wider dispersion. What I meant to ask was "is this advantageous" for a 3-way classic, wide baffle, speaker? My guess is that the answer is "it depends" on each person's individual room and speaker placement, but I wanted to put the question out there for other opinions.
