Building the ultimate NOS DAC using TDA1541A

North Thailand seems greener than the one I know (Phuket turists trap) ! The Dragon could be seen as "mauvais goût" cause the flashy colors, but one has to remember our european cathedrals were painted like that (well less glossy because gloss pigment didn't exist but when made with gold and glass paste - see post V centuries mosaics at Raven or Istambul when christian)! At least front main portals & nartex, and insides' !

This one made me think to Dragon balls manga and the seven crystal balls ! We never knew if our kids were reading a parable ! Wishes in life are exhausted in you have seven, said if you have "big" balls, miracles are for you ? Sometimes we should ask the pop culture at the dawn of the Information Theory. But it is possible I have more than a red baloon as it is 20 pm ! I liked a lot the south chineese Yhunan where I bag packed younger ! Now people told me there is an international airport there at Dali and it has nothing to see to the place I knew with less a dozen of bag packers youth hostel (hostel was the rong word, lol, I litterally s...t with the piggs in open row toiletts...great social experience !). Dali back then was 17 hours of bus from Kumning, can you believe it !

I'm at the Royal Coast and the Thai Rivera, not up north... Beach is 200m from my door.

I've been tripping balls (like that Naga) a few times, does that count?

I still got see some of that China. Finding my train in the middle of nowhere to Peking was cancelled, talking a local train with most of the toilet floor rotted out and other bit's to get to somewhere with a Bus to Peking, finding the last bus had gone and tickets had been presold for another 2 days, clubbing together with some a bit better off Chinese to take a Taxi to Bejing (500km IIRC) and repeatedly waiting at filling stations for LPG for hours, as the Car ran on LPG. And I don't even want to mention the rows of girls and their moms at the exit of the Shenzhen Border crossing from Hong Kong...

Those crazy days of the Wild East!

I am sad it almost doesn't exist anymore !

I remember in China in a bus station (no one had smartphones and cell phones at that days). I had a mini portable dictionnary to try to take a bus for a destination (just chineese symbols everywhere) and bus driver assistants want to bring everyone ! You ask is it for Kummning ? the guy said yes, but after translation effort with the portable dictionnary about chineese symbols I saw it was from BeijIng (24 h trip back then !) at the opposit of where I wanted to go !
Hey you have to see Yunan andhave a bus trip to Sichuan to see Labrang monastery ! 🙂 . I saw Lijuang but there was an "earth-cake" few years ago , so don't know if that historic village kept all his charm ! All seems f...d nowadays ! I remember the nigth trains,, not so bad, tea for free, nice chineese families, rare bag packers, not like in India !

Ah Shenzen border in the 80s'to HK : was fun by feet !

This is a glitch. Bit transition +/-1 LSB. See the spike at the bottom.
Perfect, a good real example! Easier than trying to explain with words.
As we know, basically a subproduct of many internal gates with some parasitic coupling to output.
I understand that being intrinsic with the internal IC layout, that's it?
Sample-and-hold can isolate the transition in theory, but, the amplitude in this example is comparable to LSB, so is not worth the hassle in my opinion (about the question of taming glitch).

They are also there in a DAC with filter, just much smaller steps. Imagine the filter as an interpolator that takesa few dozend to a few 100 (or more in some cases) data points in 16/44.1 and then recreates a new waveform that does not reliably pass through the original data points but is (say) 24/352.8kHz.
Indeed, then we can imagine the worst case being the NOS situation (high transition amplitude; full scale change). And, without any analog filter (ie. no-filter DAC: NOS + no analog filter), the posterior amplification needs to cope with it.

Good point about interpolation not reliably passing to original points; hence some people using heavy PC-based interpolation and sending hardware-NOS to DAC (amongst other things, like pre-echo etc). Hoping that works as advised... 😉

Yup.

Nope, not with TDA1541. It will be interesting to find what it is though.

Not the layout as such, though that contributes.

As for TDA1541 the issue is the base capacitance of the input PNP's capacitively coupling the input signals into the substrate, changing the layout will not help.

Moving the PNP transistors off board and putting discrete PNP outside the IC would have helped.

Sample-and-hold can isolate the transition in theory, but, the amplitude in this example is comparable to LSB, so is not worth the hassle in my opinion (about the question of taming glitch).

Yes, levels are low and once @lcsaszar adds 10n to ground on each output it will be even less.

Table each 'leg' sitting in water bowl. Sambal, sambal and more sambal. Ichan Bilis, ochre, kangkong, small fresh water fish about width of palm which had unusually disproportionate size heads - were 'dried' with salt, and for some reason with maggots (left to roam free before preparation). Fresh water (pond) 'snapper' (Nangai?) fed Tapioca leaves. Caught with net and thumb through the 'eye' to 'kill'.

Wear feet covering, the worms will 'up through your skin'.

Walk down jalan kampung, my wife at the time with scissors and basket, philosophy = 'take what you need, it all grows'. I was the only 'orang putih', and I could have stayed there happily. Treks, waterfalls, dragon fly the size of tennis ball. Rivers. Huts. Long-houses.

Slippery when wet tiles, sharp edges, big barrels full of water for 'wash' and toilet 'flush', squat ceramics for the same and ... reverse cycle air con and internet flat screen TV inside the house 🙂

I know how to grow a pineapple plant - you cut the top off and stick it in the ground. She would carve the pineapple from its skin, you'd have to see it to believe the consistency and the 'lack of waste'.

Looking back, I cherish it. Share, not for ego so much (there is some), but with my life 'as boring as it is' - to shout "I did exist !!!!!" 🙂
Bagus!

off topic here but that moved me - straight out of studying architecture for 6 yrs - I spent the next 3yrs in the ulu of Northern Borneo in the late 90s building things out of timber. Like you - the only 'orang putih. I was met with immense kindness and understanding, and loved the immersion; had to acquire & understand the language , just to communicate and administrate (and found doing so to reasonable professional fluency inc formal letter writing etc an nice challenge, even fun despite the urgency) and oh - the wonderful people in that part of the world do sarcasm, with great economy, like few places outside England 😉

Saya bercepat bahasa melayu, memlambatkanlah ! ..something like that; I wish I had a way, and people, to practice it with now.

Go Netherlands ! 🙂! How much the nasi goreng those days ? I loved Sulawesi and Flores to Bali islands by boat with fun guys and girls from Oz and GB !

Was it you that offered that op861 revisited I/V with discrete JFET buffer ?

AFAIK this is the worst case glitch for the TDA1541!
Transition from 1000000000000000 to 0111111111111111. The MSB switches for a signal of only +/- 1 LSB. This is the old school direct binary architecture.

The other popular architecture is sign-magnitude (PCM63, AD1862), where signals near midscale zero switch small currents only, a few LSBs only. The MSB only switches when the signal reaches -6dBFS.

This deserves to be posted again (scope capture by @lcsaszar ).
This is topnotch performance for 1LSB transition, in my opinion. What is the width of the pulses? I mean the signal, not the glitch. Is it a width of 1 sample?

With the glitch, we have to think about the energy concept, what we have below is very low glitch energy because the area is very small (both amplitude and width of the glitch are small).

Almost finished (need to make cleaner border; via fencing, checksom impedance and check twice DRC and JLCPCB fab rules (but was designed in that spirit), no embeded clock yet. One can choose Dip or Soic register, SMA or UFL connectors. All the SMD decoupling below as suggested (and helped) by Thorsten.

Here the DIP packaging version of the registers (soic version is inside the Pdip foot print if one chooses it.

Off topic, yes.. but coming up to 500 pages now an intermission or two seems reasonable .. 😉

Agree 100% - for me it has been the most amazing place. My experience in a personal sense was with members of the Bidayuh tribe.

I spent some time traveling across the top of Borneo from West to East. Brunei was memorable (both halves) - very interesting to set up a country up geographically like that. Visa at the border was $5 for 3 days transit. Penalty for overstay was some dollar amount and 30 lashes - we were out of there within the three days .. 🙂

Had the opportunity to by a small crocodile who resided inside a 2L coca-cola bottle, he filled most of it. My regret now is that I did not buy it, cut it open and release it back - but then you have created a market and so it goes .. fascinating place.

Can you zoom on the glitch as give the pulse width?
Horizontal: 50 us/div
Vertical: 10 mV/div (with x100 preamplifier)
I added 4.7 nF direct at the TDA output.
What we see here is the transition from 0111 1111 1111 1111 to 1000 0000 0000 0000 that is all bits flipped, the step is 1 LSB.
I enter offset binary like the above in my generator, but it sends out 2s complement on the I2S bus. The TDA then converts it back internally, and the offset binary word will be latched in the registers.
The glitch is most visible at bit 12, 13, 14, 15 transition.

I used to live in Brunei for 6 years. Special place… fond memories.

But no diyaudio there, getting any parts into the country was a nightmare…
