Wayne's BA 2018 linestage

The final result of my Wayne BA2018. Maybe I will put in a phonostage later…

Hi

If I’m going to build this preamp should I build it using the parts from the kit sold at the Diyaudio store or would you recommend that some components be changed.

Sorry in advance if this has probably been talked about already, reading over 3000 posts is quite demanding time wise.

Thanks
Eric

I asked the same question a while back. The general consensus was build it as it in the kit.y only recommendation is to use the bigger output devices (comes in the kit)

You can make the adaptations that have been discussed here in the thread later on if you like. By the way, it is an outstanding sounding preamp. Still my favorite!

What parts don't you like? I chose them in every iteration, they all perform as designed and sound great, and this is a DC coupled amp, so there's no audiophile nervosa about coupling caps...
Hi,

I’m not saying I don’t like some parts, my complete kit is on it’s way so haven’t seen the components yet. I’m not referring to the quality of the components themselves, I had noticed a few pages back people using different output devices. That’s all

Yes, an interesting experiment. Different active devices to try to get a different sound. You may have to see if Dirk can give you some listening impressions using the different devices that he tried. I would start stock so you have a nice starting point. The linestage kit is pretty cheap. Maybe you can order a second to experiment on if you like.

Dirk’s experiments I would stay clear of, per now. If you check out his builds and ambitions and level, it is clear that his way is not nescessarily the best for your first build of this linestage. Dirk (Cubicincher) too built it the normal way first time around. And the normal way can be challenging enough, plenty of people (including me) have struggled with getting the small JFETs right the first time around. (Looks may be deceiving).

use 6L6’s kit, and choose the big output devices. I can report that they, along with the higher bias (Iq) they allow give a slight sonic advantage in my system, compared to the small ones. A bit more clarity, liquidity and air. Haven’t had a chance to look at the residual waveforms yet or measure distortion after the «mod», but anywz my equip unfortunately is unable to measure the low distortion levels of this linestage :devily:

regards,
Andy

Hello e_fortier,

my advice is clearly to build it with the parts delivered in the kit. Those are excellent parts!
The Fairchild - transistors are really good devices. I would build it as stock as possible.
If you want to use it perhaps as a headphone-amp (and it is a very, very good headphoneamp!),
then use the big output BJTs ( I think they are also included in the kit).
I don't know how experienced you are? Perhaps you are an pro in the electronics field?
But changing parts will give you the necessity to test, desolder parts, measuring and also matching
active devices... This can be a 'stony' and long way up the hill...
This preamp was designed by Wayne Colburn for us greedy boyz from this forum. It is excellent.
I hope the rest of your chain is as good as this preamp.
I am sure you will not be dissappointed from Waynes Line Stage in the original configuration.
Have a successful and well sounding build! :note::sax::eguitar::hphones:
Cheers
Dirk 😉

Once you get started, be aware that the 2 included versions (big/small output devices need their individual details around them (varying parts). Everything is noted in the material (and included in the kit), but needs to be studied...
As I recall the thread, Andy is the first to note the bigger devices to be better.
I also used those, and am very happy with it too!

Bigger better, or more Iq makes this version of the OS better. Or my cables need the extra drive. Or a ton of other variables come into play. Dunno. Just sounds more liquid 🙂 the version with big outputs have more than double the bias/Iq. Plus a bit simpler circuit/less parts.
