Ian asynchronous I2S and S/PDIF FIFO KIT group buy

Thanks for the tutorial Ian. Easy to understand and it certainly looks easier than hand soldering!
One question: you say too long at 193C may damage the PCB - are you referring to the PCB board only or the SMD components as well?
I didn't realize those components could safely take so much heat.

@marcus1
Both PCB and SMT component are safe at 250C for short time. So don't worry. There is temperature profile. Leaded is pretty safe with kitchen oven. However going with lead free profile has risk of damage.

Ian

Picked up mine last weekend. It looks great. Thank you Ian!

I have the isolator + DoP/DSD converter. I am unsure about where to tap the DSD output. From the DSD converter (the holes are unmarked) or from the isolator I2S/DSD connectors.

Cheers,

Giulio

@Giulio

If play DoP, native DSD signal will be output to both 40PIN isolated GPIO and the u.fl I2S/DSD sockets.

Hi Ian.

I'm starting a project based on its components and the Philips TDA1541A Chip
I would like to know your opinion, if you are so kind, and I have a question for you.

The transport will be Odroid C2 (I would like) or Rapsberry Pi.
And I've asked for your Isolatorpi. And I plan to ask: FifobuferII, DualXO II ClockBoard, TPS7A4700LDOboard (I'm not sure if I need this) and I2stopcmboard

The PCB of the DAC is that of RyanJ (TDA1541A Diy Pcb - "Distinction-1541 v2")

And the converter i/u is Abbas's design
I/U convertor,5687 tube +EZ81,TDA1540,TDA1541 | eBay

Now the questions:
1. Do I need TPS7A4700LDOboard? The idea is to put some day the best watches possible.
2. I need the FIFO isolator or the ISOLATORPI is not necessary?
3. I would like to make transport independent and DAC. To be able to use that transport with other dacs you can do in the future. My idea would be to get the signal i2s via RJ45 to the DAC as they do other transports and DACs, but I know it is very complicated by the distance of the connections. I would like to know your opinion about it, or think it is best that I forget this idea, thinking about the quality of reproduction.

Congratulations on your spectacular work and thank you very much.

Take a look at this implementation of TDA1541A and Ian's stuff.
It sounds very good.

Hi Jiazz,

Your project sounds great.

1. You will need a low noise power supply board. But the new ADM715X is better than TPS7A4700. You can either buy a TPS7A4700 finished LDO board or apply a free ADM715X PCB to assemble by yourself.

2. If you have FIFO isolator, IsolatorPi is not really necessary, unless you need the IsolatorPi to pick up I2S signal for something else.

3. Please put the FIFO/Clock board as close as possible to your DAC. That's for sound quality. RJ45 or HDMI are fine but converting digital audio signals and clocks between differential to single end will have additive jitter. I'd like to see your result if you want to try.

Regards,
Ian

Hi Ian, Hi Andrea

Thank you very much Ian, you have clarified all my doubts, as soon as I save a little I will order hahaha.

As far as separating transport and dac is what I thought the longer distance will increase the jitter, but it will be nice to know how much, even if it is only as an experiment.

Andrea, your project looks awesome, and I'm going to study it to see if I can apply any of your ideas to my project. It has more pictures? to be able to study the connections. Thank you very much and congratulations, it looks fantastic and should sound just as good.

Best Regards

Jorge

Hi Jorge,

parts and connections:

- I2S receiver to Ian's FIFO (you can also use Teleporter from Twisted Pear)
- Ian's stuff (FIFO buffer + single clock board + I2S to PCM) to Red Baron DAC with Rhopoint IV resistor (you can also use Ryanj board)
- TWRPS-pp regulator as PS for Ian's stuff (The Well Regulated Power Supply)
- Master clock for Ian's FIFO reclock (TWTMC-D, TWTMC-D&D, TWTMC-OVN, Sc-Cut crystal at 11.2896 MHz, TWRPS-pp micro regulators)
The Well Tempered Master Clock - Building a low phase noise/jitter crystal oscillator
The Well Regulated Power Supply
- Salas shunt regulators as PS for Red Baron
- Red Baron to Aikido with 4 x 6N23P (you can also use your IV converter)

Hope this helps.

Sure does Andrea, and not just Jjazz!!

Thanks. I have been trying to wrap my head around what I needed to use from the IanCanada stable. I am in same Distinction group buy as Jjazz.

Now I will put my name down here for the next GB - my current spdif>I2S is sub par and is the weak link in my chain by a long way.
