How often are you likely to read the words 'Jobs eventually relented' ? Read and weep Intel; Tony Fadell: respect.

ml cls one plytron transformer (75-1) or accoustat twin transformer mod

Posted 12th October 2011 at 05:21 AM by teslaboy

hi
I collect esl speakers and mod some.
I have both ML CLS 1`s and cls 2Z speakers.
i would like to mod both speakers.
I would like to use my plytron 75-1 esl transformers
instead of the stock transformer.(CLS-1) should i
start from scratch or use the ML original eq with modifications. Also on the ML CLS2 i want to use
one original transformer for bass and a toroid for the highs like the acoustat MK 121 interface.
Should i use the same values as acoustat or use
other values. I value any ideas the community may
have, I have followed Calvin for many years and would like to thank him for his inspiration.
thanks

What's in a datasheet?

Posted 7th October 2011 at 05:38 AM by abraxalito
Updated 14th November 2012 at 02:47 AM by abraxalito (Updated with link to new article 14th Nov 2012)

Yesterday I had this very interesting exchange with RocketScientist about his open source design for a headphone amp, the O2.

https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/headp...ml#post2736266

The nub of the issue raised here is - should designers stick only to what datasheets tell them about parts or to what extent use what's 'common knowledge' about parts to eek out better performance?

I was surprised to learn from RS that offsets within dual opamps are so closely matched in practice - its a really new discovery for me. So why don't semiconductor manufacturers tout this feature? Or perhaps RS just 'got lucky' with the relatively few samples he tested?

My experience of reading opamp datasheets is that the specs for offsets (both the typicals and the max) degrade in going from single to dual devices, where the devices are all on one die. Let's have a look at a relevant opamp from...

amb a10 preamp, s10 power supply

Posted 5th October 2011 at 12:32 PM by jtktam (Newbie audio DIYer)

After multiple digikey and mouser packages, after one big amb package.. i have started my new winter project.

the alpha 10 preamp.. basically it's a backplane board for all the different amb projects. it ties up all the different pcb together into a preamp.

the pictures of a wire free chassis was what sold me on this idea. and the fact that I can replace each module if and when they get upgraded is great.

i think that this is something others can "copy" .. make a generic backplane that you can plug different modules into to make amps, etc

Maelstrom-project

Posted 27th September 2011 at 06:35 PM by Taskinen

So this project would contain Maelstrom 21" Subwoofer and Hypex DS 8.0 amp.

Attachment 498

Here is a model, size would be about 700 tall with wooden legs, 650 mm depth and 1300 mm wide.

Attachment 499

Idea with this is to do a band-bass box with t-line structure. The closed chamber would be around 150 liters and reflex chamber little over 200 with the space that t-line takes from it. Size of the square reflexport would be 100x300 mm and about 2,5 meters long (about 8 feet) and tone is around 13-14 Hz.

This is basically designed for watching movies and stuff, cutout will be probably around 30-35 hertz.

What do you guys think about this?

Rolling Your Own (an adventure in coil winding) part I

Posted 24th September 2011 at 12:46 AM by wintermute (Wintermutes Rantings)
Updated 6th February 2013 at 12:09 PM by wintermute (add info about where I got the magnet wire.)

Wind my own coils, yeah why not, how hard could it be? Well if you are as much a perfectionist as I can sometimes be, pretty damn hard!!!

I suspect it would actually have been a whole lot easier if I'd not obsessed about getting a low DCR for my coils, and gone with a smaller gauge wire. As it turns out I was (obsessive), and decided to use 1.6mm (~14 AWG) wire.

I originally had thoughts of measuring off the length I needed, clamping one end in a vice and slowly turning the former (in my hands) until I wound it all on, luckily that Idea didn't last very long and I started to think about making a winding jig.

I hit google and saw some pretty fancy jigs, motorised with clutches, speed control, turn counters, that all looked too hard, so I thought about what I actually needed. Georges Transformer winding jig was in the back of my mind too, which gave some inspiration as well

The pictures below are what I came up with. I had...

LME49810 300 W amp kit from TaoBao (Mods)

Posted 23rd September 2011 at 07:19 AM by panson_hk

The THD performance of this board can be improved by separate the input/NFB ground from the decoupling grounds. This is a common mistake in many kits.

Simply cut the trace as shown in the figure and connect the input/NFB ground to supply ground via a separate wire. THD improves as shown in the figure.

Home Teather

Posted 20th September 2011 at 02:39 PM by Taskinen

Hi!

I have designed speakers of my own using Dayton Audio loudspeakers (tweeter Dayton Audio 1" Reference Shielded Tweeter, Midrange Dayton Audio 4" Reference Full Range Driver and last but not least, Bass Dayton Audio 8" Reference Shielded Woofer). The reason why I picked these speakers was, that these things are good looking and good combination.

I built the box of 19 mm MDF-wood, 120 mm tall (about 126 mm with spikes), 25 mm wide and 40 mm deep. Volume of the box is around 80 litres. Tweeter and mid has small area of the box and it's filled with lamb's wool. Woofer has over 70 litres of space to and there is 4" Aeroport reflexport in the bottom of the box. With this combination of wooferbox, I really had doubts wheather my choise of woofer had enough raw power to use the space.

I also designed Crossovers by myself, they turned out to be 3. order passive crossovers (100Hz/3000Hz). It was very hard to design, because I...
