everything is possible , even wooden stove :)
Around 1800, in Philadelphia, they used a wood *boiler* for some years. This powered a water-pump for the city. In the New World, iron was costly, trees were cheap. Fire-box was, IIRC, brick-lined (clay was cheap), fire went through an iron box under the water. But the water chamber was all wood and held steam pressure. Yes, pressure in those days may be less than one atmosphere, and 12" (30cm) was not considered big wood those days. Wood rots slow if constantly wet, anyway replacing large timbers was routine maintenance. A foot of wood is much better insulation than a finger of cork over iron; low fuel consumption. They had some small extra trouble because crude iron, water, and wood together make more trouble than any two alone; also pine and oak together are bad. But it ran for a decade or two before rising water demand and falling cost of iron led to a complete new project. Apparently there were others.

Note that this was used to distill spirits before pumping water. They knew what was important.

Fun combo

I briefly tried Wayne's BA2018 preamp with the Mofo. Initial impression
is quite positive.

The preamp, with a 2V input and wide-open volume pot, produced
a clean 7.3V output at ~0.02% distortion. That should correspond to about
6W into 8 ohms.

I'm going to try to listen some more next weekend.

question

Good evening, gentlemen.
I’m a newcomer to this forum so I need your advice.
For the Mofo (version 19 Volts and 193 T Hammond).
I just tested a linear alimantation with a transformer of 300 VA ( 2X15 vots) plus diode bridge and 44,000 µF filtering.
I mounted a series of resistors to drain 1.7 A , the voltage is 19.5 Volts in charge.
For this voltage there, the setting of 1.7A is correct?
By thanking you in advance.

This MoFo is done! Well, almost. I’m using two SMPS600 from Microaudio. I highly recommend them due to Sami’s unending customer support! I’m also using Lundahl LL1674 in the 1:4 mode. This allows me to use the Bruno Pultzey’s balanced preamp to decent volumes. I’m using two Guardian 86 from Neurochrome. It uses mosfets for DC protection. I have only listened to it for about an hour this morning but I can already tell it will sound special! Very clear and detailed. I’m listening to Till I hear You Sing from Love Never Dies and I could not help but increase the volume at 0630 AM on a Saturday at the risk of waking up the whole family!

Ambient temperature is at 21 c and the heat sinks rise to about 40 c biased at 1.7 amps. The SMPS do not have much air flow and get very hot! I have purchased 40mmx10mm fans from Noctua and see if that cools it down. Thank you MR for the circuit and all those who contribute to this forum!

when something is so Wakoo looking , compliments must be given!

is that metal or plastic Faccia ?

just looking at these pics , I realized that greasy looking plastic Faccia of 10mm thickness could look awesome on preamps and amp cases ...... good to remember for few cases I have , without front plate .... sometimes is cheaper and can be even "just" more fun to do it differently

:)
