Hi Ray,
I also completely agree with you on your other points, and that is normally how I operate.
For really good friends, I also repair for the cost of parts only, and they help me out with their specialties. The main point is this. We respect each other and our abilities. It is a two way street. I have maybe four really good friends left. As we age, we lose people - and we get smarter about who is a friend and who isn't.
I tend to give good, honest people a break when I can. People who are not honest about things pay normal full rates.
Hi Rick,
Thanks for your comments. Agreed.

That is absolutely true. Many people just don't appreciate skilled efforts unless they pay for them.

Very doubtful that you'll ever see any of the "friend's" balance due.
Maybe you can deduct some of the loss, check with a good CPA.

Winning the case does not necessarily mean that he will get the money, but he can try.

Hi Guys,
Winning a case gives you the right to sue, that's all.
I fully expect to have extreme losses with this. All I can do is sell what he has in here with me - after I fix it. Basically, recover what I can, eject him from my life forever.
Thank you though. I do appreciate your care.

That would be really cool to see.
Really, I just want to get this resolved in some manner and move on. I'll never deal with him again, and maybe that is the best punishment.

The last thing I repaired was the ABS controller from a mid-2000s GM pickup. There were bad solder joints on the relay which forums say is a common problem, but the real issue was a shorted MOSFET that drives an electric motor. That MOSFET is already obsolete, but the owner had another module with a different fault, so it became a MOSFET donor. I don't like how much heat I had to use to remove and replace those surface-mount transistors, but it's fixed for now.
Friend filled green in the blue side of a color cartridge, he had three colors in it, the other was only black. Print came out funny.
Sent it to a pro shop, they cleaned after emptying it, refilled the ink...200 or 300 they charged.
Said it happens all the time.
After that my friend labelled his syringes, and went to a cycle of 10 done himself, then 1 at the shop.
His printer wore out, then he told me to find parts in scrap...I refused.
He had another HP, cost him 1900. and the cartridge pair was 1600...so that meant the printer was only 300?
Anyway, we do get equivalent cartridges for most popular printers at a quarter or so of the HP / Canon / Epson price.

A Canon printer/scanner that works perfectly.
I DID NOT REPAIR it, I took it out of it's way to trash collection.
Never, ever buy from Canon.
Over four PIXMA printers, I have seen, none use the same cartridges.
The Canon site supposed to give you drivers and manual is geared accordingly. One can only run in circle over links that all end up at buying stuff from them.

I agree. Wife bought a TR7520 on sale cause it was cheap (big mistake). The first trip to buy new toner cartridges will easily exceed the purchase price of the printer. And the stupid thing refuses to connect to the house wifi.😕
On the bright side, I managed to repair our Kenmore Elite fridge/freezer temp. control board. This is the dreaded Whirlpool W10219463 that's no longer in production. Replaced all 5 relays and a 220uf cap. She's purring like a kitten.😀

I often mention hanging onto older "vintage" products.
Down in my shop, I still use an old HP LaserJet4.
I get at least 1000 pages from a dry toner cartridge, and it's great for whipping up a schematic to take to my service bench.
Can't beat that old stuff for durability.

I had a Laserjet 2 for years until it died. The plastic gears inside just wore out. I got a Laserjet4L that used HP's proprietary "microfine" toner which would NOT work for DIY toner transfer PC boards. I went through several printers since then before getting a Canon MF3010 multifunction machine. I also got a small Canon printer that uses the same toner cartridge for use on road trips.
Both have been fed a steady diet of $12 Amazon toner cartridges for years without issue. The cheapie Amazon carts last from 6 months to a year depending on how many PC boards I make. One two layer board and all of the test prints I do to get everything lined up probably use more toner than a hundred sheets of printed paper.
Now, the Epson ET-2650 is a different story. If I don't print several color pictures every week or so one or more colors get clogged up. It takes several cleaning cycles to get anything useful, and the colors are still not right. It's good for front panel graphics where the colors don't have to be right. Forget printing color pictures unless you like green surf and purple sky.

Here toner powder is available, and rebuilt cartridges are $4 to 6.
Open it up, and put about $2 worth of toner, close the opening, shake it about to spread the toner, and you are ready to go.
Refill shops are there too, if you are not able to do it, or gears / drum replacement is needed.
We are a bit frugal, don't throw stuff away so easily!

Here Brother sells single packs of toner for laser printers, some models do need a gear to be replaced while doing so, a little extra work.
Samsung used to give a smaller toner pack,"starter"!
And I have seen smaller than normal new cartridges in ink jet printers.
So after the 5 ml ones are empty, you have to buy new 15 ml ones, needless expense, and also an inventory issue for the factory.
The price difference will be negligible, as the nozzles and circuit are still there, the cost to make will be higher only by the tank cost for the factory.
Stupid, and environmentally bad, those small ones are just trashed.
Once people realized they were getting ripped off, the printers stopped selling...
Some have software locks which do not allow refilled cartridges.
I also have an old dot matrix printer and three typewriters...!

I gave away our Epson MX80 tractor printer -- quite the antique.
printers and WiFi security don't mix well, and it gets worse with age.

Recently acquired Pioneer SX-2000. Tuner wouldnt play in stereo, mono OK. Found MPX section schematic in a reply string on Audiogon, had to sign up sign in to get it...
With that I was able to go through the 'ol rats nest and find an open 5uf cap, feeding a tuned circuit, which I assume is some kind of carrier trap by where it goes from there to the transformer coil center tap. No carrier, no demodulation I assume. Jumping it with a new cap of the same value and she plays in FM stereo, clean and at the right levels!
Getting the new cap in where the old cap lies, that's not going to happen; its buried so deep down in there...
