Wharfedale speaker 3XP and XP2 tweeters

The 541-09 are a pair for sale on E bay - item number 164908779014 .
The listing doesn't say that the tweeters have been tested and that they actually tweet.

When I sell a tweeter, I always show it connected to an ohmmeter to at least confirm continuity of the voice coil.

From bitter experience I know that vintage Wharfedale tweeters that have been poorly stored are prone to suffer from corrosion and stop working.

The statement "in solid condition" made in the listing is meaningless. I would avoid these.

...they look very similar to the 3XP ones from the front but different at the back.
Does your 3XP tweeter have a closed back chassis as it appears to have in my photo on page one?

Or is it an open back tweeter like the one attached, which requires a rear housing?

What you are seeing in the third image of the ebay listing is the rear housing.

Hi all,
Must admit you are probably right about the tweeters and I will not touch them - just interested in whether they are suitable and I do realise that what is shown is the rear housing although the fronts look pretty much identical to the 3XP ones.
The tweeter I already have does not have its own rear housing but does have a large circular magnet, similar to your photo but round. They fit in their own cardboard tube which is in the cabinet separated from the mid and bass units (except right at the back where there is a piece of foam between the end of the tube and the rear cabinet wood panel) and the interior of the tube is filled with sound deadening "wool" as is the rest of the cabinet.
I might add that the screw fitting holes in the tweeter are also round something to look out for when I am searching for a replacement as I think the Denton ones have oval screw holes but otherwise look identical from the front, however somewhere I have read that they are the same tweeters but I am not so sure.
My other pair of very good 3XPs have exactly the same units as these two latest ones just received although this latest pair do seem to have brand new woofers in perfect condition, totally unmarked.
Geoff.

The midrange drivers will have a rear housing in the form of a cardboard tube such as you have described.

So, are there two cardboard tubes in your enclosure?

I ask because the rear housing for the open back tweeter is usually a small plastic cup or metal can - see attachment.

Hi,
No, sorry my mistake - had a hell of a weekend and still very very busy! It's the mid-range that has the tube. There is nothing on the back of the tweeter of course other than the heavy magnet. There is no plastic or metal cup.
Geoff.

Hi, Photos attached. Diameter of the cut out is 8cm.
Hope these are of use. They are the Glendale 3XP tweeter but I guess they could also look like those in other similar models of Wharfedale speakers of the time - eg Denton perhaps - quite how you tell the difference I have no idea as, from the front they look the same.
Regards and thanks for your help.
Geoff.

Galu will know what I am going to suggest here:

Monacor HT-22/8 10W Cone Tweeter PS9.35 IN STOCK (31 Aug 2021)

MONACOR: HT-22/8

We have done this sort of thing with the Wharfedale Linton and Glendale 3XP 3 ways:

4uF-4.7uF and 0.2-0.3 mH seems about right for 3kHz. Some attenuation needed I think. At least we know the polarity of the drivers.

Get some 2.2R and 3.3R resistors in 3-5W and be prepared to wire them at the front of the filter.

HI,
If I go that way I think what I would do is to cut circle out of wood, 8cm outside diameter and 6.3cm inside if I can manage it and fit it into the present hole - glue and then filled where I make any mistake!
Easiest way is to cut the 8cm, glue it in position and once filled and dry cut out the 6.3mm circle within it. If I go that way - as I am in no hurry in case any 3XP tweeters come up first this being the second set of these speakers I own. The cabinets for this second set where a mess so I have rounded the hard edges all round the outside, spray painted them white and have just sent off for some dark grey grill cloth to re-cover the damaged grills. This gives me a set of slightly more modern white speakers with grey grills (goes with the carpet) for the summer and normal wood with brown grills (goes with the furniture) for the winter! Reality actually means that I have a set of spare cones and crossovers if I need them at any time in the future fitted in a cabinet and safe.
Must keep busy - easy (exhausting) when you are retired although there never seems to be enough hours in the day!!!
Regards,
Geoff.

A mounting plate? 😕

90mm flange, 80mm cutout doesn't sound problematic to me... 😀

Use 4 screws and washers on the edge of the tweeter. Make an audio grade cardboard gasket out of, er, a Cornflake packet to cover the monacor 80mm holes.

Job done. They don't teach that in school! 😎

HI,
Yes should be able to do that for you - better dig into the re-cycle bin first to find it!
Going to order capacitors - advice please - are these below ok?
Willys HIFI 22uf Bipolar Electrolytic Capacitors (x2) 50v 10% at 96p a pair
Mundorf E Cap AC 15uf 70v Bipolar Electrolytic Capacitor 70v Plain at £6.36
each
Mundorf E Cap AC 4.7uf Bipolar Electrolytic Capacitor 70v Plain at £2.80 each
They also do 15uf and 4.7uf as Bipolar Polyester and Polypropylene 250v Capacitors
My guess is the 70v ones would be ok

Also CPC do Visaton Bipolar Electrolytic 22uf and 15uf 63v that would also fit . The 22uf being £1.78 each and the 15uf being £1.36 each.

I will get the tweeter photographed a little later today for you.

Geoff.

Thanks, that would be life a lot easier.
Photo attached of the inside of the tweeter with its cloth cover removed.
Bit of a mess as the whole of the magnet assembly had fallen off in transit damaging everything and pulling out the rivets holding the assembly in place.
Anyway - hope this helps.
Regards,
Geoff.
