Wharfedale speaker 3XP and XP2 tweeters

Actually the tweeters i may have are from Leak 2020s. Still a large fabric covered thing but not sure if exactamundo the same thing. I shall still have a look!
Here they are with fabric cover removed.

Very similar to the 3XP tweeter.

A historical note for Geoff:

Wharfedale was purchased by The Rank Organisation in 1958, who went on to buy Leak in 1969.

Rank decided to make Leak their high-end loudspeaker brand, but individual drivers, such as tweeters and mids were frequently common to both Leak and Wharfedale loudspeakers.

By 1975, Wharfedale had returned to high-end designs.

Thanks Galu - interesting. Wharfedale now of course, are owned by the Chinese Company IAG, but then almost all Hi-Fi seems to be, including, unfortunately Quad, that very famous British brand.
I suppose that one day this country will own something.
About to order the following capacitors Monacor 22uf and 15uf and 4.7uf all 250v 5% Bipolar MKT Polyester (Metallised Polyester Film) - hope that is ok? From Willys Hifi.
The equivalent from CPC comes out at £23 more (I need four of each for the two sets of speakers).
Most are all a bit big but there is plenty of room to fit them in.
Geoff.

Just found that Wilmslow Audio also do similar Capacitors but they are Polypropylene as against ones that Willys sell that are Polyester.
Any preference or does it matter as the Willys version are a bit cheaper? Totals being £54.80 with Willys and £61 with Wilmslow.
With both companies they are all Monacor capacitors.
Geoff.

Sorry guys I think I must have binned the tweets in a wife enforced speaker component cull.

I have a pair of the HT22/8 here if you want to try them

I replaced the tweets in the 2020s with some cheap 3" peerless/vifa fullrange...TC8FD something or another.

Well, bought and fitted new capacitors to my 3XP crossovers and, sorry to say, although the base and mid are perhaps a touch better the treble is much more harsh, thin and scratchy.

In fact, overall I am not sure there is any real improvement as the smoothness seems to have disappeared. Base is perhaps not so deep and cuts off more quickly, the mid is very slightly more forward but it is the treble that sounds a lot worse with all the smoothness gone unfortunately and very uncomfortable to listen to.

Photos of capacitors attached and as fitted.

Question - which capacitor is used for the tweeter - 25, 15 or 4 uf so I can put the old one back?

Geoff.

How much listening time have you given yourself to get used to the new sound balance?

The new 4uF capacitor may simply be more revealing of an inate harshness in the tweeters themselves.

Perhaps it's now time to swap over your tweeters as was your original intention?
