W8-2145?

Yea.
I don't sit 4' from a little pair of 2-ways listening at 90+db.
Sure you have bass sitting that close to those little guys.

Room acoustics, speaker dispersion patterns, low level listening (fletcher munson curve), etc.

and who cares ?

I bet a double blind test, someone would be hard pressed to hear tone controls bypassed, assuming the freq range amplitude is level.

These are Corbra Horn II's. Next to them are the Merlin ported boxes, also from Hobby Hifi. They have the Tangband W5-2143 inside. The Corbra's totally blow away the Merlins.

To Norman Bates:
I use the notch filter on the Cobra.
There is empty space inside the Merlin and separate space for the triple notch filter. Also there is a helmholtz resonator inside to suppres the lengthwise standing wave. So imo this is a classic ported box.

sorry, no pics yet.........

But builder brought in box and I stuffed it.
I'm an overstuffer, box is just over 3ft3 and 3lbs of acousta-stuf wasn't enough to me (after teasing then adjusting).

I'm bringing home, will add more stuffing, then pics tomorrow late afternoon.

I'm happy the driver frame will be clear up to the top edge, only 1 screw in a generously drilled out pilot hole and wood glue for the top screw, going into the top wall baffle. 13 ply baltic birch.

I can see from hobby hifi 2017 that there is the typical 2.5khz +5db peak found in 8" drivers.
Cobra 2 has notch using expensive mundorf parts, 1mh (12g .3ohms) + 4.7uF + 3.9 ohms.................
Think I saw on a German forum where the resistor can be 3.9, 4.7, or 5.6 ohms, up to you.

Can't say as the peak bothered me, especially for movies, but if you all could point to some music that would spotlight it, so if I made a notch filter, I could hear it is a help........

They (hifi) also pegged the qts at .53, if that is so, sealed 3ft3 is not waaayyyyy bigger than the .707 sealed.
Although the .3ohm inductor may push that qts closer to .55 or more (not much though).

The peak/dip was not annoying to my ears.
Usually 8khz peak is hissy, or too much s's and t's.

I am curious about the dip at 10khz, maybe something to do with the phase plug being a cylinder instead of a bullet, not even reaching the top of the whizzer.

That baffle step looks bad.
I didn't get that, but mine was sitting on the floor, up against a wall, under the tv.
I did like some bass boost...........

Ok, think I found what that sharp 3khz resonance does.

It adds some nasally noise to Adelle’s singing.

She is a bit of a “head” singer, using a bit of nose/nasal passages in her singing.

But, intelligibility is great. Remember just getting started.
Listened a bit to blu-ray adele live at the royal albert.
Caught her lip syncing at 24:30+

As it sits now off the floor, it needs massive bass boosting for my lower volume listening levels, lack of baffle step, probably a bad floor bounce, and maybe even a front wall reflection/dip.

Were I listening mainly to Diana Krall "peel me a grape", light classic music, quartets perhaps, punchy jazz, late night movie watching, I could see a pair flanking the television if listening distance was no more than 10’ away. I’ve even entertained cutting a hole in the front baffle, installing another baffle over it with the driver not against the edge. That way I'd have a stereo pair.

But 90% of the time I sit 15-20' away, so I need my 12" 2-ways to get the bass that far into the room where we all sit.

I need to put this speaker on the floor, like how I meant it to be. A vocal anchor for watching movies/anime without waking up the house.

This speaker is definitely not for listening to Kid Rock or Tool, I think yacht rock may even be a stretch. But stereo speakers off the floor may open up more music.

I read glow in the dark audio where the reviewer had a single WE 755 8”, mentions

Glow in the Dark Audio - Altec 755a

“The drop in scale from 2 speakers to 1 is a challenging situation and would take some adjustment…. And letting my ears adjust to the huge differences in single driver presentation…. On its own the Altec clearly sounded better than the Visaton b100, Saba greencone, Jensen c-855, Rullit Aero Alnico, Norelco AD3877M, and the Lii F18. However, the Altec by itself was no match for any of them in stereo.”

Interesting……………

got it on the floor under the tv today.

It takes massive bass eq for some bass sitting back at the table (16' away), but intelligibility was good.
Overall I backed off the treble knob compared to the way it was boosted for my jbl's and the single revel.
Maybe that 3khz peak is starting to get to me.....

Sitting at 15', the voice wasn't as localized to the center of the tv as I had hoped......

Laying on a couch with ears 10' away, I'm going to have to angle it towards me a bit.
And I backed off the loudness knob a bit for less bass boosting.

After rearranging, I hope I don't prefer the speaker directly next to the tv as pictured above.......

I'll probably watch a blu-ray tonight, something with mumbly vocals, maybe coherence (2013), gattaca (1997), or A dark song (Irish/British 2016)

I have become very aware of how you can have the eq set, but sounds different at +3', +5' or +10' further away depending on how your speaker interacts with your environment, especially this single driver.

I know I am asking too much from it. I remember saying "no bass" beyond 7' when I made this before.

Oh well, I made it exclusively for late night movies and music.
Instead I'm wanting it to do what my pair of 12" 2-ways can do.

Till next comments....................

ok, I see (hear) that the notch is pretty needed..........
At least coming from my smooth revel.
A few members here don't like this driver, makes sense now.

From the hobby hifi 2017's test
"Conclusion: the w8-2145 is currently one of the best 20 cm full range speakers, and at a very popular price. Assuming careful linearization of the frequency response, it achieves high-end qualities in the cobra horn."

I sold the one years ago and the owners opinion was...
"It’s been great! I ended up using it as a center channel for movies/TV because EQing it was kind of a bear for music, but the elevated upper midrange made it perfect for dialogue haha."

and

"I actually ended up with this! It seemed to be elevated especially between 1-3kHz which made vocals/dialogue accentuated nicely. I personally prefer a bit off axis to tame a little bit of the shout but I’m quite happy with it."

To be fair, the published graph from tang band shows maybe a +4db spike at 2.5khz

Translated from german.....
