Ordered notch parts today.
38 year old receiver died after lasting a whopping 2 months after in for repair. 🙁

have an l-pad (used as a 0 - 8ohm resistor), the 4.7uF and the 1mH.
Soldering circuit together tomorrow night, posting opinions on monday perhaps.
I've also been eyeing 15 band equalizers, they have a slide at 2.5khz (problem area for 8" drivers).
Saw this chart over on audiosciencereview............

So far, so ok..............
Bass is an issue.
Perhaps because the driver is clear up at the top, or the 5khz+ is boosted, or just my ears really want it.
Run for music, I need to get the bass dialed in.
Maybe I should have gotten the 15 slider eq after all..................
Oh well, live and learn (or pay more money anyway, lol).
So, notch definitely helped, a lot.
And yes, 10 degrees at 10' makes a big difference, loss of high frequencies.
I think this is still "1 pair of ears speaker" at 10'.

Nothing new, just some musings.
It is a lot different listening to music with only 1 speaker versus a pair.

Those of you who have played with ambiophonics.
Cheaply done, move your speakers so they are side by side, then put a barrier between them extending from the speakers to your nose.
The center image is right there in front of you.
seperate the speakers, remove the barrier, and the voice is a hazy blob maybe 6db lower in level.
However, music is mixed on a stereo pair in front of you (basically mixing through this), so you will hear way too much midrange if you only use 1 loudspeaker (I think).
Anyway, pretty sure I'm happy with the notch values, I need to test the potentiometer to see exactly what value the resistor.
Next step would be dial in some baffle step (seems severe).
I may need an equalizer to really zoom on on where I want the knee to be.

All this is a reminder of why I prefer over toe'd speaker layouts that cross at 'x' distance in front of my nose.
On an 8" ?
On the wooden front. First time reflections are damped.
It's worth a listen.
You can try some clothes for a listening test a scarf or the like.
Ok, I ended up with 5ohms in parallel with the cap and inductor.
So 5ohms + 1mH + 4.7uF
Close to what someone on a german forum came up with, a little more resistance than for the actual cobra2 notch.
Next up, passive baffle step, or "bass boost" for my liking for music.
Currently I am way into a loudness knob setting......

"however, the Altec by itself was no match for any of them in stereo."
Comparing a single altec in telefunken open baffle (open backed) to other stereo 8" full range drivers, on glow in the dark audio's review of the 755a.

Perhaps start over.
Driver's whizzer got a bit crunched sometime.
It happened b4 the move................
Now the surround has a rip in it.
I assume cats did it................
The voices when watching a movie definitely localized under the tv.
If it had wider dispersion (like a dome tweet), I think ceiling bounce could help localize voices to the center of tv.
I did prefer the driver directly next to the tv about centered to the tv (up and down).
Ug.
I'm just really curious about the 9db down.
Would need a circuit for that.
Let alone the smiley face eq that I prefer...........
Especially at under 80db listening levels.

I had a cat for 20 years. She was quite good. She understood that the speakers were not to be touched. Neither was the couch. Gave her a scratching item, and she stayed on that all her years.
The W5 from TB beam quite horribly. I couldn't place them so that I'd enjoy them.
I used them in my guitar cab. Good enough.

For me good full range speaker always sound amazing when you first listen to them, because of the very pronounced spatial illusion. A bit like hearing with a good headphone. An hour later, when you listen less concentrated and rely more on the whole sum of the output, not only the unusual "sound" sensation, this wears off. You start to ask your self what is missing or wrong, giving you this "it could do better" feeling.
This has not changed since I heard the first Lowther full range many years ago.
I use full range speaker for background music, but prefer good 2 ways for stereo and multi channel music and HT reproduction.
In my 5.2.4 have 3 identical MTM speaker for the front, all at the same (ear) hight, the center NOT on it's side, but upright like L+R. Looks a little unusual and the TV is placed quite high (I got a 3.7 meter/ 12 foot ceiling). This gives a real nice reproduction with the speakers just disapearing.
I know of no full range that can do that with such a broad listening area.
You got to accept some limitations of a single cone reproduction and it is tedious trying to discuss this away. Wizzer cones all add a lot of clutter to the higher region and usually give quite some distortion.
This can expalin why they are used with instrument speakers, like guitar combos.

I'll bet the w8 beams more than the w5, lol.
I agree, a whizzer has its own resonant problems.
An 8" full range is not a scalpel, absolutely.
But I find it a good simple compromise between bass and treble.

It's funny, but my W8-1772 actually beams less than my w5!I'll bet the w8 beams more than the w5, lol.
