This was a big complaint on the EP 600.2SE amp. On a 600w amp, you hardly ever see the needle move for home setting.
The pot that controls the span is on the back of the VU meter. What you suggest would be to bypass that and add a dual gang pot to scale the speaker level signal that feeds it and have that accessible to the front or rear panel? A lot of complexity there for a feature that 99% of people don’t care about if 0dB really is max power. We simply define 0dB as 8vrms. (Which is typical max power in a domestic listening room). 😂
Yes, thats what i did with my vu meters. That way vu meters would bounce nicely to full scale in any arrangement.
There are those who will only need a watt or two. Those would like to have option to change from 8 watts to one or two.
Than there will be those who run ten to twenty watts. In that case needles would be pegged to the end, even at your 8 watts setting.
Pot on the back is totally doable. Just set the trimmers on the back of vu meeters to the max and insert stereo pot between speaker output and vu meters.

If we did this with DPST switch on the front panel, all it would add are 4 resistors and a switch plus another hole for the switch. The PCB for the front panel is already there so easy to do the circuit. Then it would be 1X or 0.2X for 8w or 40w.

X, I’ve had my EP 600.2SE for several weeks now and in daily use I’ve never seen the needles move. It’s also set to its lowest gain setting to be able to listen quietly at night without resorting to headphones. They are true self powered galvanometers with a built in span setting and time averaging plus an voltage protection circuit VU meter. COTS product of course.
We are finalizing the PCB layouts in the main PSU/Softstart/SSR board for the production version after catching some minor issues and fixing them. That’s the thing with amps is there are so many parts that all have to be working before it is done.
Yes, good news. The final verification build was successful and we are finalizing the BOM to send to the manufacturer now for building. We are also setting up a way for people to place pre-orders. Here is the final box (vero unit 3 with all the bugs worked out), plus some very nice features all confirmed to work. Solid state relay soft start, solid state standby/enable, automatic thermal shutdown protection, solid state speaker DC offset protection, solid state anti-thump graceful startup and shutdown, front panel solid state relay mute switch. Viborg premium copper binding posts, premium gold plated input RCA’s, custom wound dual toroidal transformers for single case dual monoblock design. It’s a real beast of an amp, I think about 50lbs if I recall.
Not for this initial product. Maybe next gen - we wanted to keep this one simple, and yet it got pretty complex with the ancillary startup / shutdown / soft start business. The front end on the Alpha Nirvana as designed, is single ended. It has an LTP input so in theory, it can be made balanced but that would require prototype and testing.X, were XLR connections ever considered?

The amp measures 430mm W x 375mm D x 177mm H (including the feet) and weighs about 46 lbs. The heatsinks take up 40mm of the width per side and the chassis without the feet is 160mm high.
430mm W is 16.93in W so should fit inside a standard 19in wide rack space, although plenty of room will be needed next to fins and top to permit air flow for natural convection cooling. Note that the binding posts extend about 40mm beyond the back of the amp so make sure you leave room for that, the power cord and the speaker cables.
