Jean Paul,

Unfortunately the facts are known........the question is what are you going to do about it?

While the previous board is only nice looking, this one here is more of a functional type. It is A-75 front end and please notice how the trimpots are mounted. The board installs on rear panel and through the access holes one can adjust pots without opening the amp. This was very practial, as temp changes didn't affect meter readings.

I was rather proud of that board, and since it's made 10 years ago, I didn't use any software (to design it), but did it in 2:1 scale with dry transfer pads and lines. Took me whole day to do just the artwork😉 Also, the fets mount directly to the panel and support the board at the same time.

Since the thread that supposed to discuss board design went to Texas, I thought we might as well try to do it here, especially when some of you still think that I have no clue about boards😉

Re: Question to moderators

I've taken some time to consider the pros and cons of enforcing a greater degree of civility on this forum and am left wondering why moderators do not more quickly censure uncivil messages.

CIVILITY is the key word here. I don't think the quality has declined, nor the participation. But clearly people have become less civil in their approach to others on and off the forum. Calling others idiots, for example, goes largely unpunished.

I have long recognized the "tiered class system" in this forum and people laughted at me. I learnt that through discussions opposing moderators or friends of moderators and it couldn't have been more obivious that some of us are more equal than others.

As to Fred, well, I am not happy about the way he is treated in this thread. But if he cannot take the heat, he shouldn't be playing here.

and I for one wouldn't lose sleep over his departure, tho. I do think the moderators did the wrong thing here and owe Fred an apology, in public.

I like this board better than the top one.

Here is one of my first layouts, a new version of the Leach amp. I noticed afterwards that I could have made a lot of the traces thinner:

Peter,

No one was doubting your abilities to layout a board, 25 years ago I hand taped a board that was 16" by 10" ...a preamp, looked great but had a a few flaws that had to be corrected the entire project took me about 400 hrs. I wish I still had the artwork. If I knew then what I know now, the board would not have been so great looking, but would have sounded a lot better.

Sometimes the best looking board is not the best sounding and I am sure that Fred had reasons for the way he laid the board out the way he did.

Regards,
Jam

P.S. Peter I still say the A75 is one of the most underated Pass designs, one day when I have more time I would like to update it. If the Master does not get there first.........😉

I don't think nice looking boards are substitute to good designs. You may be able to design nice looking boards but that is no indication that you know how to design boards.

Otherwise, electronic companies would be hiring art students or painters as PCB layout engineers.

Hi,

Sometimes the best looking board is not the best sounding and I am sure that Fred had reasons for the way he laid the board out the way he did.

Knowing Fred a little it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he even did it on purpose....Showing that board and not some hopelessly complex IF multilayer job, that is...

You all should know he can be a bit of tease by now...😀

BTW, does anyone still use leadout plyers?

Cheers,😉

Why does everyone still keep flogging the Leach amplifier............😉

The Leach Amp is the reason that I got started in this whole diyAudio thing in early 2002... At Georgia Tech, you can take a 1hr class with Dr. Leach, where you get an A for building a Leach Amp. I was amazed at how much better the Leach amp was than my regular receiver when I built it. It opened my eyes to the idea that audio can sound good. I have since stopped using it, but it will always sit on my shelf:

It is a lot more solid than the gainclone, and I have I have driven 2 ohm loads on it without problems. I also like how I can short the output, and it doesn't complain with the built in protection circuitry.

I like the gainclone better than the Leach amp, but the Leach amp is still a decent amplifier. I had thought about making a version of the Leach amp with premium parts and see how it compares to the regular amp. Now I am hooked on gainclones, and haven't looked back.

I do still have a couple of Aleph amps that I haven't finished yet.

I also want to try tubes someday.

If you calculate Freds ratio of useful postings to diatribes, attacks under the giuise of being concerned, tantrums because he isn't the most popular guy around even though he has lots of experience, he has one of the worse signal to noise ratios on this forum. A typical example is his attacks on Grey.

Basically he chooses someone he is jealous of because they are "more recognized", then thinks of a topic to attack them on.
Sometimes he thinks of a legitimate point, but to put up with all the **** and attacks for a few decent points isn't worth it IMHO

He isn't first offended by the issue, he is offended because he knows more than they do, yet they are more appreciated than he. Why are they appreciated? Because they put in a lot of work helping people, whereas he is just a pain in the A**

Here's some more asterisks for you Fred :*********

Feel free to stay away

Hi,

If you calculate Freds ratio of useful postings to diatribes,

They may not be useful to or even understood by everyone but they're always informative in some way or another.

Thing is, if you understand what he's on about you probably don't need to be told what to do anyway....😀

Cheers,😉

EDIT:
Great picture..........worlds first portable radio?

First, I don't know...sometime around or during WWI I guess.

That's one reason I'm not using that often PCBs these days. I much prefer p2p, 3D layout, because although it does not look that good, it sounds better.

I definitely had my reasons to lay the DAC's circuit the way I did it here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22733&highlight=

Does it look good? I don't think so.😉
