What might the problem be if the 2 market components get really hot even if no load is connected. 5V is present but nothing on the +/- outlet.

Those are inductors. If they are really hot and +/- output is not working then there is a short somewhere. If you have a DVM with diode test mode you should check that D1 and D2 are still working as schottky diodes and not shorted.

This particular unit was operational during a lightning strike which took out all 3 main incoming service fuses. Other electronics were broken at the time e.g. one of my Icepower ASP1000 units. It sat on the same outlet as the amp....

It is quite likely that lightning strike could only damage semiconductors. So apart from the schottky diodes U2 (DC-DC converter) or U3 & U4 (regulators) are possible culprits. Diodes are cheap and easy to replace so start by checking those.
