hi Tibi,
Longtime....but I have been busy...
Question ...is your modified laser unit (we did multiple mods on it) still stable...
I got two out of three malfunctioning after a couple of months.
The one I kept for myself is still playing incredibly nice...but it looks like there is something going on......I am quite curiuos

Hi,
Probably bad soldering ...
Here no problems at all. In fact sounding better and better.

Tibi
I just did the two mods TIBI recommended. The single capacitor mod went well. However after replacing the two others the mechanism now doesn't read TOC. Disk spins but (faster than before) but is unable to read. Suggestions on what to look for?
For sure the issue come from your soldering.
Use a 10X magnifying glass, or take few macro pictures with a good camera/phone and zoom.

Tibi
Tibi,
Sorry to be a pain, but what is the supply current drawn by the transport? Can't find it here.
Current variation with speed and CD type is between 500 mA and 800 mA.

Tibi
That's for the whole transport? all circuits?
Yes, All

Tibi
How about this ldo for higher current?
There are plenty of LDO regulators who claim over 1A, but only very few will go over 1A in continuous operation without exceeding SOA.
Spartan, you need to take care of input voltage and power disipated and for sure your LDO will not handle this.
LT1086 is more feasible, but a little more noisy.

Tibi
