Schade Common Gate (SCG) Preamp

Ah, being an optimist backfired….installed new resistor and trimmer, got back to step B, R11 smoked instantly.

On that side, the CCS MOSFET shorted in the previous encounter with higher than palatable current.

🤦‍♂️

So, here we go, let’s replace R11, RV101 again, and Q103 this time!

You may mock me, and I am posting this so that future me can laugh at current me too.

That's a pic of a working SCG. You are not alone. Posting these things always helps. I've done worse things, like not being careful with them precious VFETs.

Nice build @ElArte!
What are you using for volume control?
Did you leave the ‘shield’ floating at the preamp side of the input/output signal wiring?

Not decided yet on volume, but I’ll start with an external RK27-100K-in-a-box.

So, earlier in this thread, I mentioned how grounding and shielding always seem a subject of confusion, with various experts preferring one approach or another.
In this build, I wanted to try something new. So, it’s a 2-conductor cable + foil and drain wire. I connect all drain wires to ground at the input. Will it make a real difference? I don’t think so. This layout is spacious and I kept all signal wires far away from power bits. The case itself is pretty thick.
I didn’t connect drain wires to the PCB ground plane on the other side.
What’s your preferred set-up?

Will you be driving the SCG with Turtle Iron or vice versa? Should work wither way but one way might sound better. If the Iron pre has a buffer in front, might be better to drive it with the SCG but overall it might sound better driving the power amp with the SCG instead of the Pumpkin.

Very curious to hear how it sounds.

So, the short of it is that it sounds great. Very fully sound, I can tell 2nd harmonic distortion dominates by a significant margin.

I am not really an audiophile, so I do not know the flowery language to describe what I hear in a way that would mean anything to anyone else. Sorry.

I like it a lot.

I tried putting a 100K "pot in a box" in front of it, and when no music is playing, I get some low noise that varies depending on the pot position. It's mostly noticeable on my bench headphones.
I tried it with a 50K "pot in a box" in front of it, and it's less pronounced, but still there.
I am going to try with a stepped attenuator next.

Not a big deal, but I would like to eliminate that entirely if at all possible.
My wife says I have bat ears, and I must say I often drive myself insane over little noises/sounds.
