Rogers LS3/5a

They have no bass, they don’t tolerate much power, they’re very inefficient, they don’t like solid state amps very much, they have a crossover the size of a small amplifier, they don’t play loud, they have a rolled off high frequency response they don’t like to be anywhere near room boundaries but their midrange and imaging is to die for.

True -although they weren't designed to have any.

No -the drivers like the B110 available at the time couldn't handle much

Agreed. Not much option, being a small speaker with a high impedance.

It's certainly not small -price of the drivers, cabinet etc., plus the ability to be individually adjusted if needed (in theory 😉 ).

Definitely not. They weren't designed to, and wasn't necessary for the intended application. It doesn't make them the most 'flexible' of loudspeakers for other uses...

Not by design: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/1976-29.pdf -plenty were screwed up or altered in the manufacturing though, departing from what was intended. Especially those sold to the public. 😉

They were designed for use as TV voice monitors in extremely small spaces, notably mobile production vans, so as-intended, they were fine. If they weren't produced as intended -gets a bit more 'interesting'.

but their midrange and imaging is to die for.
Certainly very good for the era; still pretty good now.

Yep, green has less diffraction.
If you could move the speaker in another location like one third into the room and take one at 1m away on T-27 axis it would also be interesting as to how much the room differentiates the bump. Now the couch could be absorbing some upper bass energy. If away from it that may change a little.
 
On ladder and moved into the room. 36" on tweeter axis. Huge improvement with the grilles on.

Now I'll have a good listen(tv) tonight, grilles on of course..

OH, forgot, I watched the video this morning you posted on post 12 - I watched all of it. Great stuff, thanks.
In the video he talks about the issues that can can occur over time that will change the response.
Yes, appears my pair are functioning 100% original!

@ Joel Wesseling: could you make high resolution,single point, 1 meter 5dB div measurements of the woofer and tweeter separately? This will require disconnecting.
Notwithstanding the BBC pedigree, so far I have not seen different make LS3/5A measurements that were very similar. So I am curious what yours look like.
