Poogeing the SACD: The Pioneer 563A

Thanks.

Hi Nic,
I got the files. Thanks a ton.
I looked through the section that interested me most. The place that I find easier to mod is the output stage. I also found from other machines that the analog section can make a huge difference to the sound. Changing numerous power supply capacitors and the clock is more difficult and we have a parts problem over here. Even Panasonic FC caps are not available here.
Maybe some judicious supply decoupling after probing with a scope might help the digital section.

At the moment I think I can take out the analog signal just after the DAC and use a passive filter and better opamp and external power supply. That way the board is not affected much. At the most I might remove one SMD resistor . Currently I will not make any holes on the rear panel but will pass it over the rear panel. The top cover might have to be lifted slightly. I will also shield the opamp circuit completely to avoid RF pickup , maybe in a copper foil case.

I want the option of being able to put back everything ( one resistor I guess ) if I want to sell the machine after I am done with it. That would happen only if I can get a machine that is 'much ' better than this one .

If the upgrade works very well , the machine is probably worth keeping a long time.

Compared to a Marantz CD19 MkII with P3A external DAC , the stock 563A sounds very good. A bit bright and slightly lighter mid bass ,but very good. So the mods might just equal the system mentioned above. That cost the owner over US$1,000/- .
Will keep you guys posted. Thanks again Nic.
Cheers,
Ashok.

Guys,

I read the thread and found something writing 565A is almost the same of 563 model.

I'm going to buy a 565A, so I was wondering if someone could tell me for sure if 565A and 563 are the same player.

thanks!

I have a Pioneer DV-656A-S and this one isn´t the same as 563A.I my DVD the DAC for the right & left channel is a PCM1738.
I haven´t made any modifications (yet...).
I found the service manual at this website:

Sorry...I mixed up 656 with 565..
Can´t blame it on beeing drunk....perhaps worked too hard 😉
Anyway,I gave a good link to a place to search for service manuals.....

I recently bought a '563. Haven't done anything to it yet
(other than listen...). One thing I have noticed is that I
get a slight "snap" in my speakers when switching my
input selector to the Pioneer. Since this happens when
the unit is off or on, I am slightly puzzled. I don't detect any
apparent DC level, though I've not gotten out my meter
and measured. Other than the little "snap" sound, all
is well.

Has anyone else experienced this?

How much do the mods cost ?

I've been reading this thread with great interest as I've been thinking about buying this relatively cheap universal player for a while.

At first, I thought about buying a higher end CD player (like the Cambridge Audio Azur 640C. But then, I'd still need a good quality DVD player. Even then, I'd probably be short on SACD and DVD-A capabilities. Then I heard about the 563.

I'd like to use it with my stereo GC amp (for now) and a sub. Eventually, I'll get 3 more Brian GT kits in order to fully enjoy DVD-A, SACD and DVD movies.

Now I am wondering. With the proposed mods (damping the case, replacing the caps, adding a few more power supplies, maybe even replacing a few chips) is it really worthwhile ? What are the "must do" mods ? Damping the case ? Replacing the caps ? Adding power supplies ? And what am I in for in term of cost ?

Are the improvements worth the cost ?

Cost of Mods

Jean-Pierre,

the cost of Panasonic FC caps and OPA 2604 op amps as outlined in earlier threads by Vinnie, me and others is approximately $80 Canadian from Digi-key.

The cost of transformers, good rectifiers and psu caps is difficult to estimate. It all depends on how far you want to go. I used 3 new tranformers to get 12, 3.3 and 5 volts and a +/- 12 volts for a new output section. This cost me about $150 Can.

You can see the costs mount up.

But, the mods are definitely worth the cost. My modified players are great. My latest all out effort, see picutres a few messages above, outperforms my stock Philips SACD 1000 and is in the same league as my friend's Sony SACD1.( He paid close to $5000 for the machine!)

The little Pioneer has a lot of legs.

Can anyone send me the description of the 563a 13 pin power supply connector voltages (and control signals if there are).
I would like to build linear power supply.
Thanks!

You sure don't make things easy. below is what I got when I tried to email you, Waz up?!

Sorry! That user has specified that they do not wish to receive emails through this board. If you still wish to send an email to this user, please contact the administrator and they may be able to help.

Robert-Psu Update.

Hi Robert,
How did you make out with your burnt-out PSU?
Did you repair it, or did you go analog?
If you changed it to an analog supply, some of us would appreciate a description of what you did. You know, voltages, control signals, resets ..., that sort of thing.
Cheers" '
Nic. '😀'

As for Gai Lai

The voltages are

1,3,6,10 GND
2 SW +12
4 E +6 (B)
5 E +6(A)
7 SW +1.8
8 EV +3.3
9 P Cont
11 FLDC-(measured -24)
12 FLDC+(measured-20)
13 -28V

I have had good results modifying my DV565A, basically made circuit boards using FET OP-AMPS each with its own regulated PSU that replaced the IV converter hanging off the end of the DSD1791. Here is are the schematics and PCB layouts if anyone is interested. it uses the proteus PCB design package you can get readers from http://www.labcenter.co.uk/ , there is also a bitmap of the schematic. The compressed file is a rar compressed file, I think winzip should cope with it.

I'm listening to my almost completed 563A for about 2 weeks working on my tube preamp. The sound is much better with the new caps, op-amp, separate power supplies with fast-recovery diodes and mechanical damping sheet. The unit weight is now much more substantial. I already installed the +/-Jung PCB for the new analog output stage. You can see the bare board at the back reday to receive the circuit. I may have time to complete this mod next week. Here the picture of the actual player.

The sound is no more agressive in the hights. I'm using my DIY SDS headphone amp and my trusty Grado SR-125. Before the mods, listening using headphone can give you headache really fast. More to come...

Pioneer dv563a update

Hi all who have been following this,

Just to let you know that I have just finished a new outboard tube output stage for my latest version of the Pio.

It has a balanced configuration, transformer loaded output using two 6N30 sections per channel. (Like a long tailed pair) . ( I used Lundhal transformers)

There are no caps in the circuit at all, the balanced transformer taking care of the offset. I did not use a roll-off filter, relying on the output transformers' own roloffs.

The Left and Right +and - signals were taken straight after the dac, with the ground, and brought out to a 6 pin connector which also carries the muting relay actuation signal. I made an umbilical using teflon covered silver cable to take the signals to the outboard circuitry. The wires are carried in a nylon mesh chord. The outbaoard chassis uses a 6 pin XLR connector.

The filament supplies are regulated as is the Hv supply. The muting relay circuit is powered from the raw filament supply.

I guess that is it, except that it SOUNDS GREEEEAT!

Some pictures follow.

Nic.
