Pearl 3 Burning Amp 2023

Fantastic! Well done!

👏 👏

Pearl will absolutely be able to drive that, and is worth trying.

In my experience and opinion, a "passive preamp" rarely, if ever, sounds as good as active. YMMV, of course...

I can get a feeling for if gain is optimal with passive pre and then maybe upgrade Ironpre with a pot.
It is just strange that the pot in IronPre sits exactly in same position as the Goldpoint will do in its own box. The only difference is a short RCA cable vs. built into same box?

with too much gain in system, there is noise (hiss), it doesn't matter how good each link in chain is made

OK, it does matter, but you'll always have more hiss than with optimally built system

now, remove Wayne's line stage, put that Goldpoint in front of Iron Pre and enjoy; nothing wrong having 10K outa box, if using just one input, so no selector to care about

it doesn't matter what amount of swing you actually need for driving your amps, when you do calculus, starting with regular 5mV (rms))cartridge, situation is tricky...... vol pot at Wayne's line stage rotated all the way up, there is 13Vpp before Iron Pre

in short, as guys from Detroit used to say - there is no replacement for displacement

I was in a similar predicament, @MEPER. I have global volume set with the Iron Pre, and fine tune per listening session with my DAC/DSP (anywhere from 0dB to -20dB on the DAC output). I use an ADC for the output of the P3 into my DAC. I am quite happy with this setup. Simplified chaos.

@jackinnj ,

Thank you for the addition information.

Is it possible to Run a plot of the same setup with a 48K FFT Length, 3 averages , with Level (dBV) or Level (Vrms) on the Y axis and Frequency on the X axis? 48K FFT Length gives a near approximation of the actual noise floor.

This is the type of FFT plot commonly used to show Harmonic Distortion peaks (if any)

Thanks DT

I am away from the bench for several days.

AP has a macro "FFT Scaling for noise"...should be in your macro file....at least for the SYS2722. This adjusts the data so as to render the Y-axis in dBV/RtHz or V/RtHz and takes into account the various binning (equiripple, flat, hann etc).

I find that the analog analyzer etc is better. Just take the values, divide by the square root of frequency, gain and filter factor and there ya go.

Hello,

Yes the APx500 software does "Amplitude Spectral Density" plots with the Y axis scaled in dBV/RtHz or V/RtHz.

I suppose that we at least I am used to seeing reviews and the like showing FFT plots with Harmonic Distortions and "noise floor". Hum and buzz are not random at all and show up on the FFT as a series of peaks. I am not used to seeing the Y axis scaled in dBV/RtHz or V/RtHz.

When I get back to the bench I will plot some real P3 data scaled in dBV/RtHz or V/RtHz using 48k FFT length with 3 averages.

Thanks DT

@jacjinnj,
Is that gel-cell battery in your photo powering your Sam Groner instrument amplifier?

Yes, my IP has only RCA-in / RCA-out so I manually switch RCA cables when I go from my digital setup to TT setup and visa versa.
I will try out just using Goldpoint in box the coming days. This morning I removed Whammy and if I get time tonight I will do a short test using Goldpoint.

It can drive Lazy Singing Bush which is a follower amp. So I guess it can drive F4 also.
IronPre set to 12 dB can output some voltage before the input circuit clips.
That is the nice thing using a step-up trafo that it can output a lot more voltage than the rails.

Build complete! First impressions, sounds fantastic! I had no input on the right channel at first , where I then discovered I had inadvertently set the dip switches incorrectly… Flick of a few switches and I’m back in business! Dead quiet and fantastic imaging and channel separation. I started with Nathaniel Rateliff and the night sweats to see how his booming voice sounds on the Pearl 3, and wow! Just great. Thanks to all who put this project together. View attachment 1264280
Fantastic setup please enlighten us with your setup as I can see Klipsch Forte's not sure which model. I too have Forte III so will be interesting to see what amp/preamp you use. I do see a Schiit amp on top.

Thanks

Manniraj,

Thanks! Current setup is VPI Scoutmaster II w/Soundsmith Carmen -> Pearl 3 -> Schitt Ragnaraok 2 -> Klipsch Forte III. I was using a F6 w/Akitika pre-amp before I switched to the Ragnarok II. Trying to simplify the downstairs system a bit. Overall a very good sounding system.

Thank you @msikk just out of curiosity apart from the simplifying your amp/preamp combo from F6+Akitika preamp to Schitt Ragnaraok 2 was their any difference in sound for better and is Schitt better now with Forte III 😉

As my current setup includes most of the time Ropieexl streamer with Pi3 (Salas LPSU) -> Soekris R2R -> HPA1 clone preamp -> SissySIT R3 -> Forte III, I love the way R3 powers the Forte's and makes the music lively/dynamic and imaging being its forte.
