Pearl 3 Burning Amp 2023

Theodorikos of Northern Macedonia you are not.

I'm gonna smoke a cigar and have a nice Armagnac.

BTW, my speakers are back from the shop... when one of the woofers went.... I had to replace both because a running change had been made at the factory. It took more than two months and it was "so fast" because we got the parts before the UK factory went on vacation to Torremolinos.

BTWII... being retired was sweet.... it sucks going back to work. All this money... and then my wife retires, so she's enjoying it. I hardly get to play the stereo nowadays, nevermind attend to the projects I had lined up. I'm making do with an intermediate P3 build.

Životot e smrden, nemam vreme za zabava.

At least I'm learning AFDX.... leave it to the Franco-German-AngloSaxons to screw up good old Ethernet... just like they did with the CAN Bus. If they had invented the Internet we'd still be using the CLI and mainframes and Brussels would have to verify every email before it got transmitted.

Yep... AFDX added ATM to Ethernet..... Nuts....

A small hint to show you where I am right now 🙂 I know @tonyEE is gonna go crazy after seeing this!

Back to being serious, we got really unlucky because Jim sent me an email right when we were about to close for our summer holidays and we have also sold the last one a couple of days before that.

As soon as we are back I'll have my colleague produce more, I think these should be ready after the second half of september

Seafood paella for two, stuffed calamari with the legs nicely deep fried legs and garlic and potatoes with octopus? White wine? No, not going crazy, since our trip to the Old Country where we actually ate like that for a whole month (!!) we've changed our diet a bit, with more fish.

That's seriously good food, enjoy! You won't get that in California. Perhaps in New Jersey, or chez moi.

Oh, I love the cigarettes... that's so European. ;-)

I started this project in May, had a few issues which got fixed. In testing, however, there is a stubborn problem: When the P3 is in the sound system, both D1 LEDs flash continuously; the only sound is a steady series of shorts (like Morse code). I had to put the project aside in early June and am only now getting back to it.

Observations.

  • DC voltages, PSU and RIAA, appear to be correct and DC voltages on both RIAA boards match.
  • Various dip switch and J2 settings produce different flashing rates (same on both boards), but don’t fix the problem.
  • Bias readings (R27=500 ohms) are identical at .3.1 mA.
  • The PSU is stand-alone in a separate chassis and is connected to the P3 chassis by a four- wire cable with XLR connectors at each end. At both ends Pin#1 is connected to the jack tab. I have two cables, one where both Pin #1s are connected by wire and a second where Pin #1s are not connected. Both cables provide the same result.
  • Cart is AT Art 9 MC (0.5 mV output). Currently using a DIY Salas phono stage (working properly for years).
Since both RIAA boards perform the same way under test, I assume that the issue is elsewhere. I searched through postings here and haven’t found anything directly applicable. Post #2298 refers to PSU mis-wiring, the discussion around post #1335 explores grounding, and there is a reference that D1 flashing indicates clipping.

Advice appreciated

Some checks that come to mind:
Are the opamps installed in the right way?
TTA and TTC transistors not swapped or the wrong way around?
idem 7815 and 7915
?
Thanks for the ideas. As mentioned, dc voltages on both boards are the same.and match voltages printed. It's unlikely, but not impossible) that the same error would occur on both RIAA boards.. Cases in point: U4 (7915) on both boards showed incorrect voltage. Installed a new set and correct voltages snapped into place. Similarily, I damaged one of the original opamps, bough a package of five replacements and installed two. Voltages wouldn't match. Turns out of the new opamps was faulty; once replaced everything was OK..

I suspect this issue is related to grounding or shielding (maybe the cart is an issue). Hopefully someone witll focus,on, and perhaps eliminate, that.

If it was only grounding or shielding I would expect noise and/or hum, but still music to come through. If you hear nothing but short clicks and have flashing leds I would think something more serious would be wrong like components the wrong way round, faulty parts etc. Please post a few pics, maybe we can spot something from those.

Finished building Pearl 3.
I was listening for an hour.
Detailed, clean and tight sound but little too bright.
I think more treble than bass.
So I have been checking if there is any mistake but didn't find.
