seems to me that whatever type of projector we have/want to make, we have overlapping requirements...namely, bright as possible (of course), as simple as possible (no heatsink requirement a definate bonus), and as much light pointing dead ahead as possible, cheap as possible, and (the tricky one to find out) RGB balanced output only ! (most leds don't appear to fit all these requirements)...
so with that in mind, if i find something that is all these things at once, i'll post the info straight away...can i ask the same of you and the other good folk at diyaudio ?

Unfortunately I think our solutions have such different requirements they might not be any help. I need a large array of many many LED's, and you need a small very bright array.
Not to say we cant learn from eachothers experiences, just we cant directly imitate 🙁

today i've been looking at these from ebay...
thought i could use nine of these as they'll only cost a tenner, just got to figure out a real basic way to run them !...item description says they're narrow beam (13 degrees) which is a good start, but although this company didn't reply to my last email, i'll try to ask them if the white will split into red green and blue okay
or if that fails (no big outlay if it does) i thought i could use three seperate lamps, each comprising four to nine leds (red green blue - of course)
either way, i'm thinking that i can cast the leds in clear resin, making them into a "collimated" single lamp

I like your hex LED idea.. !
Your decision to use connector blocks...it's up to you but to me it would be more work and harder to try and use connectors rather than solder..it does depend just how many you are going to connect.
Are you still on the path of retrofit a commercial projector with LED's
Have you found a way to bypass the lamp detect ?

thanks, i think it'd be good for so many applications
for a small lcd like mine, there's only going to be 5-10 leds assuming 10mm each, so i thought that if i can find wee little blockies then i can easily replace any dead leds, i thought i could use electrical contact grease in each terminal to improve contact, and the spagetti wires at the back may be a good heatsink
if you'd ever seen me soldering you'd know i'll probably be quicker with a screwdriver in my hand 🙄 so even if i was needing to do hundreds i'd still at least consider it

though i can't tell you definitively about every type of led, i have conducted research on 'ordinary' cool white leds, and they're most definately 100% rgb balanced

by the way, the leds i tested were sold as InGan type, so assuming that's true, then the fancier new types such as k2 should work equally well as the common types

My 110" picture is clearly viewable in total darkness, and partially viewable but not useable with dim halogen room lighting.
I am soon ordering another 100 of these leds to fill in a few spots and brighten the overall picture. The spots can only be seen on white or light colored pictures. When I get it completed to my standards I will post pictures of everything.
Speaking of the color spectrum of white LEDs, my father is an electronic technician and engineer at the local television station. He is always obsessed with having the tv color PERFECT. I let him tweak my monitor's color settings with color bars, and he was fully satisfied with the color output. I'm not saying that all white LEDs are like this, but THESE LEDs that I used had the full color spectrum.

that picture is a little small my friend, even clicking on the thumbnail...but do you mean to say that the leds i tested may have varying intensities compared to sunlight (or uhp lamp etc)...i used a spectrometer to view the light output by the sun (during the day of course) and the leds i had at night
using the spectrometer (just a cheap plastic astronomy toy !) i could easily see that both sunlight and the leds were emitting in nice, balanced quantities of red-blue-green (all three colours appeared as bright to my eye)
the only real problems i think i'll face are getting a small enough, bright enough led lamp for my application, and the behavior of the led light upon reflecting in the projectors' dichroic mirrors
i just need to get on with it and stop thinking too much !
