Hi nebosja,

I am finding discribing the sound of a speaker a bit difficult. But i'll try.
The cabinet is a 9 liter BR and is tuned to 53Hz. The Alpair are realy amazing, sometimes it's hard to believe your listening to single drivers the size of a coaster. The sound very detailed without harshness. Voices and string instruments are clear, you can hear every breath en finger setting on the snares. Allthough they are capable of producing low frequenties, they do not have a lot of punch in that respect. So they are not "party speakers". I believe they are very well suited for builting a FAST system. The Alpairs really need about a 100 hours of playing time before they sound really good, in fact the first hour I listened to them they didn't sound very good at all ! But even after a few hours of playing the sound quality increased dramaticaly.
All in all I had a lot of fun building the bowls and stands, the next build will probably some subs to match these Blanda speakers.:D

I love the humble ikea speaker

I'm realy enjoying those picks I love that curved wood stand I've made a set with the medium size bowls with Tang Band w3 the $9.90 ones from parts express mine were far from precise just guessed the port used a sure amp and they sound fantastic PS my first build I picked up some more bowls today to try some different drivers I think I'll give your curved wood stand a go like I said you have done a great job with yours

Here is one of my new omnis =)

The bottom part is an U-frame and the sphere is sealaed. The bottom woofer will be mounted from below. On the small platforms on top there will be four tweeters pointing inwards and slightly up to make it an omni all the way.

very nice build. I wish i was as skilled with a router. My own blanda build involves just a wood saw or hole saw and an industrial belt sander/linisher...with luck i can cobble together something half respectable :D
It just takes time and effort to learn to work with tools that's all :D. If you can create a nice hole with a saw and and belt sander, you will also be able to learn to do it with a router. I spend much more time building the jig to maken the holes with the router then routing the holes it self (takes less then a minute :p)

Hi Goolagger, your Ikea bowls look great, I think it is much more difficult to put in speakers which are not round. I love the fact you can create good sounding speakers without spanding a fortune. In the end this hobby is all about being creative, learning and having fun doing that. Theres no need to spend a lot of money achiefing that ;). I 'll post some more pictures from teh build.

IKEA Bowls

I think this idea is great! "Thinking outside the box!" best compliment IMO! In keeping with DIY on the cheep, I would look to Speaker Stuff scroll down to the M&K 4" 2way speaker.

Or the other approach: Same page as above, but scroll to the 5" Cerwin Vega and the TN28 tweeter from HiVi Research, Swanspeakers.com find them at https://www.solen.ca/pub/index.php?s1=1&a=2 This combination would get closer (visually) to the B&W 800 series.

I would use a fostner bit in a drill press and bore the hole for tweeter first. This way if things go bad, well there will be no frustration from other work done to this point.

My ones (start of the thread) rolled off my workbench, and the magnet ripped from the driver and clunked into the sphere. Cheapy Vifa mid drivers.

I'm no longer using them, so if anyone wants two glued up and wired in spheres they are more than welcome if they can collect (Bristol).

They need a bit of sanding, but free to a good home.

inspired by you

Hi All,

This is my version of an Ikea Blanda speaker build.
It is an Alpair 7.3 in the Blanda Matt 28cm bowl.
The Alpairs are flush mount using the techniek EUVL showed here. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/159151-ikea-spherical-speakers-first-build-done-21.html
The stands are made of layers of birch 18mm plywood. They have a finish of Osmo Hardwach

hi i loved the shape and look of your design witch inspired me do something of my own its a 2.1 system i used Peerless 830986 3 inch full rangers in sealed small balls and a dayton DC160-8 61/2 inch in the big bowls ported to 50 hz for woofer action ive worked out i want to drive the dayton from 50 hz to 300 then let the peerless take over from there i have no experiance with crossovers any help with with what software to get pref free or a simple design to start with ar an amp that can do 2.1 would be great thanks
