Well excuse me its taken so long mate.!! The heat in Australia @ this time of year along with my disabilty makes it hard to put in long days sorry that aint up to your expectations.. I'm taking pictures of the project as I progress for those interested in purhaps using some of the ideas or techniques I have implemented , I realise that the final projected image is all that matters and hopefully it will be worth the time I have put into building the projector, I enjoy "tinkering" in my workshop, I do it at my own pace so it remains enjoyable, it's a hobby for me not a job...When its finished I will post screen shots!

Great work hillbilly, im very impressed !!! (must be somthing about us aussies eh? lol, no pun intended). I cant wait till you get that badboy fired up for once and for all.

Next i take it your going to be having fun building a screen:bigeyes:, got any ideas for that yet mate?

Keep up the great work buddy.

Trev🙂

Your handiwork is very impresive. Although I have the equipment to do that kind of mitre work on the aluminum, I doubt that I'd go to the trouble to do it. 🙂 I'd be more likely to just use small angle brackets to hold the case together, instead of a full corner brace... Well, unless I needed the additional structural strength, in which case, I'd probably use steel and weld the corners.... It looks very impressive. Again, excellent work!

(And at that, I don't have to mess around with the dremel, I have a power compound mitre saw)

Don't worry about the speed of the project, take your time, do things right, and you won't regret it. Some of us really do appreciate your taking the time to snap pictures of it at various stages of completion. This is exactly the kind of information that I was hoping to get, reading this thread.

Thanks, mate!

Wow:bigeyes:

You, I for one really appreciate you taking your time keeping us up to date on your project. Excellent craftsmanship!🙂

Im not sure if you've answered this before or not, but what will you use your projector for? Movies? Computer? Gaming? TV?

I too agree that you should never rush these kinds of things.

Well Done!!!

and once again - Good luck on the finishing touches!

The journey IS the reward

This is a hobby, not a job. The enjoyment is in the process. Planning, building, solving the little problems you find along the way is where the fun is. Then when you are finally finished, you get to watch some movies or play some games.

I understand the impatience of "the young" (meaning those who have not built one of these yet!), but ragging on HiLLBiLLy to speed it up, is like telling your uncle to hurry up and die a rich man so you can get your inheritance.

Besides, compared to me, he's flying like a bat outa hell!

So HiLL, maybe you should try your hands at a DIY air conditioner next?

Thankyou for the wonderful comments guys means alot 🙂

For the screen I have some out door roller blind material I will be using, un-decided on how this will be fixed at this point tossing up between using two curtain rods or making a full "picture" type frame. Until this is made a white sheet has been hung from the roof LOL

Supraguy

A compound saw would definately save some time no doubt...dont have the luxury of one though LOL I like the mitre cuts I guess more for the finished look, im a lil' fuss I guess hehe Im glad you like the pics too guy, the whole reason behind taking the pics was to help others building PJ's as others have done before me that inspired me to start my own project...I have gotten so much from this forum and those on it, time to give a little back to help others I believe 🙂

Ancorp

Projector will be used for watching local TV broadcasts, movies and playing games buddy 🙂 As you know shes hooked up to my PC so it will also be an extra computer monitor too hehe

Guy

LOL@DIY aircon....I do actually have aircon here in ma garage already but not in my workshop unfortuneatly thats a corrigated iron garage and is like an oven or a sauna when the temp gets over 30 degrees lol

Thanks again for the encouragement fellas much appreciated

🙂

difficult working conditions

>corrigated iron garage for a workshop

Yeah, I've got one of those too! I spent a lot of hours out there late at night working on my PJ recently, and freezing my butt off. (And San Diego is almost tropical!) I would even let my dogs in there with me just for some "livestock heating". Unfortunately, one of them is a serious air polluter, if you know what I mean...

I think we have an El Nino forming up. We have had so much rain lately in the SW US, the hillsides are starting to collapse. I have not had to turn on the avocado irrigation for a month.

But to the point: DIY air conditioning is a real possibility. If you already have an air conditioning compresser, then it is easy to add remote cooling units. They contain an expansion orifice, a heat exchanger, and a fan. All you have to do is mount it near the ceiling, wire it, and add some copper tubing & valves.

If you want to be stressed put a minus infront of that 40. 😉 That's what it was this morning when i woke up -40 C with wind chill. I agree with everyone the projector looks really nice, quality workmanship there. Slow and easy wins the race. 🙂

Thanks for the nice words fellas ...

Unfortuneately I have had what might turn out to be a major set back :-(

I finished the PJ yesterday and powered it all up, the LCD aint showing a display screen, I had lights on the button panel and on closer inspection I realised I had hooked the ffc cable attaching the small panel to the large control panel incorrectly (had it upside down) The way the panels are mounted in the PJ meant twisting and bending the ffc cable (several times) to get it in the correct position, Im praying I have only broken a ffc cable and done no permanent damage to the other hardware. I was speaking with Trev about it and he does'nt seem to confident that the ffc cable is the only problem which aint to reassuring :-( I'm taking it to a local electronics technician this morning hopefully he will have a better idea of the damage/problem I have done, I don't want to fiddle with it anymore myself testing it incase I do even more damage to it. If it's not repairable (cheapily) I'm afraid it's going to be a long long wait before I have the funds to purchase parts to fix it and/or a completely new Lilliput.. Shall await the outcome of the verdict handed down by the techniician today, but not to happy bout it all at the moment :-(

On a slightly brighter not, when I had the PJ running with it all together I was getting a very bright white screen happening the normal mirror im using maybe up to the challenge after all...shall wait and see with this to I guess...

Shall keep the forum informed of the outcome, thankyou all again for your interest in the contruction of my projector and the wonderful comments you guys have made, motivatives a person to to stick at it. I also hope those that have viewed the thread might get a lil' something out of it for their own projectors.

Thats it for now guys, I'll be back on the forum when I know more.

FFC cable plugged in upside down

All the FFC cables I have seen are single-sided. If that is the case with yours, then plugging it in upside down would be the same as not plugging it in at all. I doubt that you could damage either the controller or LCD driver board by doing that.

Hopefully, you just busted the FFC. If the tech finds that is the problem and you have no local source, replacements are available from Digikey or Mouser, with no minimum charge. If they balk at sending them to Australia, let me know. I will get one for you and then airmail it in a letter.

Digikey

Yes, that's correct. I think they say it's free shipping over $25, $5 shipping & handling if less. I can always find $25 worth of stuff I want! But a lot of other electronics distributers have no provision at all for orders less than $50 or even $250. They just charge you the minimum ($50, etc.) if you can't convince them to give you a free sample.

I tend to use mouser.com. They now have about as much stuff as Digikey, and in a pinch I can drive over and pick stuff up. It's about an hour from my house and they will put a small order together in a couple of hours for pickup.

I know that doesn't help HiLLBiLLy much, but for something as small as an FFC, I could send it in a standard letter envelope.

G'day Guy ...

This is nearly exactly what I explained to Trev but he was saying thats not the case that there is metal on both sides!! Thankyou for the offer to airmail Guy, hopefully it wont come to that I will try to source them locally, sometime back a fella from Perth posted he could get them locally the thread i believe has since been deleted as I can't find it! I rang the technician and he is willing to have a look @ it but was unable to do so today as he had house calls to make for the day. My impatience got the better of me LOL so I took Trev's advice and ran the multi meter over the FFC cable in question and got the results I was hoping for, approx 3 of the wires within the cable are still functioning, the rest are dead..so to speak hehe. So that's a little more encouraging.

Took a pic of the cable in question---->

And the reason the cable got bent in the first place was due to mounting it on the opposite side of the LCD chamber than previously, It is lined up perfectly however the metal on the cable is facing the wrong way hence I "maipulated' LOL the FFC to invert it to be correct way around, I think if i did this once instead of half a dozen times I would have been ok!
