Hi wg_ski, You missed the fact that I was wanting to load the cab with a different driver?
Thanks, Al.
Thanks, Al.
Hi Art, I love a nice big block Chevy.
6db increase for doubling the x-mass, you say?
Jeepers, going from the EV 18 3.3 to the SI 22.5 would be an increase of 3 times x-max, about an 18 db increase? That don't seem right.
3.3 flat
6.6 +6db
12.12 + 12db
24.24 + 18db
I may have to stick an SI into an old EV box!
I'm sure I'm not seeing this in the daylight.
I do, however, think maybe I should stay out of the gumbo and stick with a tried and true TL cab, maybe with a modern driver? What say?
Thanks, Al.

You gotta 4018LF in one box.
I gotta SI HT 18 in one box.
The box is a TL 505.
I would like low E bass guitar up to my available x-over (125Hz) in my cab. Yep.
One 18" mono subwoofer
Blend in with my TL 12's
Is this the way to go, all things considered? I find the purchase price of the SI HT 18 very attractive compared to others that offer similar spec's. The SI drivers are designed here in the USA then sent to the low bidder in China. Did you know China has better forgings than US?
That is more than likely not true.
All things considered, I think the SI HT 18 in the EV 505 might blow the Ladies skirt up.
Thanks, Al.

News flash: most bass players now use a 5 string with a low B, 31 Hz compared to the 41 Hz low, you may want to think lower, especially with the driver you are considering. You gotta 4018LF in one box.

The SI HT 18 should be capable of a lot more LF than the 4018LF, but the upper response around the crossover point may not sound as good. It is a hell of a deal for that amount of Xmax, but the TL 505 ports are way undersized for that much excursion.
The 4018LF is also a lot more sensitive, so you wouldn't need as much power on average.
There are advantages to each, but for the price, looks like the SI HT 18 would be a better choice for you.
Hi Art,
Good Friend of mine Craig played a track for Black Sabbath before Geezer came back. Couple tracts with Rainbow. On his Gretsch fret-less 4 strung. I got to man handle that ax on stage live a couple times while Craig was back stage busy with a blow job. Nice guitar, not a five or six strung. Normal bass out-put would be nice for me now. If I can cover normal from top to bottom with a cracker jack budget I would be elated!
As much as I was attracted to the disco-ness balls hanging out short horn reverse mounted tapped slut on Friday folded hard on scoop, this mentality eventualy surfaced as a "Bobber".
Flat tracker, come on....you know.
OK, that nice shiney new SI HT 18 in an old dusty 505 cab. Don't get much better than that!
Thanks, Al.

Hey BeauB,
I have seen your postings all over the place. I watched you talk yourself into purchasing the SI speaker. Human nature allows us to be proud of our actions.
So, how do you like it?
Would you change anything?
Thanks, Al.

Honestly, at the price I paid - in retrospect - I should have purchased two.
For my use and size limitations (WAF), sealed has worked out very nicely.
It hits hard with a Crown XLS 1500, bridged.
It is not that I a proud (hey, I like whenever anyone gets something they enjoy) - I just wanted to share my observations re price per dollar.
Hey BeauB! Thanks for the cool uplifting support!
I just got home from the local ER. They had me sign some SYA forms and suggested I should contact family members before they told me I was going to die last night.
That makes you my first contact to declare a misnomer.
I'll spend today trying to wipe the .....grin off my face!
Be well my freind, Thanks, Al.

Ooph! Get a lot of rest, and when you feel better try to exercise with walks together with a healthy dose of speaker building. 🙂
Last night I finished my latest project, a Meyer Milo replica midbass array that will let me lower my sub to below 70Hz. Great exercise, I woke up today sore all over.
Approved by Metallica!

My new Friends Rewind and BeauB. And then there is Art, for whatever reason, took me in under his wing.
Metallica stayed with me here in Cortland for a couple weeks when they were scoping out some local recording studios for Combat. Long time ago when Cliff was still with us. Did you know he was an avid C&W bass player? Not many do. Kirk and I spent countless hours playing that old board game called "Sorry". He was always scribbling things down on his scratch pad. Lars kept to himself, spanking his tubs down in the basement. We put up some old mattresses on the windows for him, he seemed to like that. Not a very social gent. James and me had an on going spaghetti eating contest. That young man could pack down some pasta. My name is on the Kill 'em All. Yes, I have many pictures. I ate lunch a couple times with Ozzy and Rudy Sarzo. Anthrax attended my wedding reception. Ron Padavarna (personal joke) gave me an autographed picture of himself and told me to hang on to it. We have a street here in Cortland named in his Honor, Dio Way.
I've seen, heard and built some bass cabs in my days. Better yet, I have experienced solid clean bass. I have an old Phase Linear 700 Series II amp that has a 1000 to 1 something going on. Hook this up to an old JBL and you will know my past LOL
I have my old stereo receiver. It has morphed over the years. Now occupies two racks. I call it 'Frankenstereo'. It's a 4 way 8 amps.
I'm lookin' to put some shine on those old toes.
The Doctors tell me my heart muscles have been beating up on each other. They have become so strong they just hang out in my chest like a bouncer at your local dive with his arms crossed. "Whats that you ask? You want us to pump some blood?" They have me stabilized with some meds. They give me a couple years. The government mule drags a "thank you for paying your taxes" $1025 lump every month for me to live on.
I plan to put a good chunk of that crap on my sub. Can't take it with me. Think I'll go balls to the wall and bridge the old PL also why not?
Thanks for reading through a historicaly lengthy amount of mud on my behalf, Al.

Rewind, your livingroom sounds great! I'll be right over and surf your couch for you.
Al.
Very cool story about Metallica. Will check the Kill Em All album after someone named Al. If you are lucky there will be at least one.
I have been messing around a lot with horns and although they are fantastic and so detailed with a very fast attack, they miss the fullness of a midbass cabinet. Horns alone are really just good for ridiculous nonsene-jazz, or "fjantig tramsjazz", as we call it in Sweden.
Tonight was the first time I have been able to enjoy metal for a while, thanks to the Meyer Milo replicas. I have them hooked on to a 5 watt 2A3 tube amp, which must be getting rather warm by now, because the sound is magical. The original cabinet has a 4000 watt amp. Not sure what they use the rest of the 3995 watt for. Oh, yeah, Metallica need 138dB! Ofc...
The midbass tower dwarf everything in the room, even the 1 meter mouth horns. My sub is the 12" I mentioned earlier, the Eminence LAB12 in a sealed cab. It was plenty yesterday, but now it it looks and sound puny. I will put it in a basshorn and see what happens. I have straightened out a Labhorn in a round frontloaded horn. That will be interesting to hear. I haven't had time to hook it up. To busy studying to become a heart researcher, or at least something within medical research.
I may jump on your 18" sub. Make a good design and I will replicate yours as well. "Resistance is futile. I will add your heavy metal subwoofer's technological distinctiveness to my own." It will make a nice addition next to my Metallica speakers. 😛 My ridiculous nonsene-jazz-horns are in need of a double dose of testosterone - STAT!
You should really speak to a dietitian, and later when you are better, take very long slow walks to get the heart in shape. Unless you are in really bad shape. Better check with your doctor first. The reason I am telling you this is not because of something I heard in my studies, but what an old man said to me a summers day when I met him on a road to nowhere walking around here on the country side. I was bicycling and met this sharply dressed man from the city on a dirt road. He explained how he had changed his diet and no longer ate meat (cholesterol) and that he took these long walks. I know vegetarianism is not very popular in the states, but I have been a happy (bodybuilding) veggie for nine years now. A good source of protein is eggs (without yolk, just to be safe). Boiled chicken, and fish is also fine. Simple tricks like that can give you many more years. You should also let them monitor your heart with regular ECG check-ups.
I need to get a couch before you can surf on it. A friend of mine is happy with dancing on the table, but only when he's drunk.
I am sure you would enjoy the metal scene in both Sweden and Norway. I doubt you have many black metal bars in the states. There were none in Montreal last time I checked. Just ridiculous-nonsense-jazz bars.

Rewind, be my hero. You are a very kind and intelligent young man. One of my best Friends over here just happens to be a registered nurse. I admire someone that pursues a medical career. Thanks, I like the hike to my secret fishing hole. Sometimes I stay overnight and pan fry my catch in the morning.
I have noticed the older someone becomes, the more likely they talk about health issues. I don't wanna be that guy. I have walked that road to nowhere so many times I have become the road to nowhere. I wann'a paint my last day walls with some Lars basement dipped KICK.
I got this guy in my back pocket. He survived the Electro Voice/Bosch buy out thingy.
Still works in the tech department. I've been nagging him to death about the old short horns EV used to sell. Of particular interest to me is the EV SH 1810-ER cab. My guy is very tight lipped about this, so of course I'm jump'n all over this thing. It's a hereditary hand up from the good old T-18. Thank God for the design engineer that took the time to actually play around. He must have his hand on this cab from beginning to end. Just like Hot-Rods. It's never really finished, is it?
I've narrowed my search down to two candidates. The tried and true block buster EV 505 Theile cab, or the yet to be refined SH 1810-ER. Bass reflex vs. short horn. I plan to load either with the deal of the century SI HT 18. Wish I could tell you I have something more exotic up my sleeve. The best deal may be in the bargain bin. (the place where nobody looks). Look in there and see my name on that old vinyl.
Rewind,
You made my day with your words of wisdom. Others should learn from you. I recently became ordained stateside, my first sermon will reference you with your permission.
Thanks, Al.

Unfortunately, nether of those cabs will work very well with the SI HT 18.
The stub horn is already "off the pipe" (-6 dB) at 50 Hz, and response goes way south from there. You could put the full output of your PL700 in, all you will hear down low is flapping and clacking from the loose SI HT 18 suspension and voice coil hitting the back plate.
With a BR you could tune the box low enough to get keep the flapping under control or stuff socks in the ports to keep the driver from unloading.
Have fun, keep on trukkin'!

Stuff socks in the ports? You are a man after my own heart. Thought I was the only one that does that. The dirty ones smell beter down low. You could call me a dirty cotton sock cutter.
Art, thanks once again for crushing my dreams. LOL
