Frugel-Horn XL for Alpair 10.3/10p, Fostex FF165wk, more

...and they sound great.
I’m now contemplating building an Amp Camp Amp (ACA). How do you think that would sound compared to the Emotiva Bas-X A-100 I am currently using?

Quite a bit different for sure. IMO better. The 8w is usually more than enuff, and the amp clipping recovery is excellent.

Class A vrs Class AB. Simple vrs (probably) a lot more complex.

Only you can decide. I have a few of them.

I’m not familiar with, and have never heard, amps play back to back, so I don’t know if I’m missing something or not.

A reason to get one just to do that.

No, i only used the 5w stereo ones. The bigger ones came later, after teh A10p FHXL were not here anymore.

The monobloks can be parallel or bridged. It should make little differenc ewith A10p in FHXL (damping might need more damping with bridged, less w parallel). I needed to use parallel or just stereo to drive the big MTMs.

alanhuth: That's a sharp looking set of FHXLs - nice work! As Dave indicated, an ACA is more than enough to drive the FHXL to reasonable levels. I've build about a half dozen of the ACAs and given them away to friends and my kids have them in the bedroom music systems. This combo clearly won't provide disco-level volume, but for listening to music around the house and for television viewing, they are just great!

alanhuth,

Congratulations on completing your FH-XL build!

You are right, DIY audio as a hobby can be quite addictive! You've started with speakers, just wait till you get into amplifiers and preamplifiers. 🙂

The ACA is a very nice beginners project. Another DIY ampplifier you can consider is the MoFo (MOSFET Follower). The PCBs are also available at the diyAudio store. Here's the link to the thread on the Pass Labs section of diyAudio:

Build This MoFo!

Any plans on "protection" for the drivers from such events in the future?

Anyone have any ideas that are better than something like this to protect the driver in my center channel from being run into (again) by the dog? The is the smallest one I can find in this style. Other speaker grills are a wire waffle mesh that covers the entire driver. I was kind of looking for something with minimal visual impact.

I really hate to drill screw holes in the front baffle of my speaker, but I haven't found a better option yet...

Eric,

The "bar grill" style seems to be made for sub-woofers in mind, with the minimum size being 8"; for an Alpair 10P you would need something smaller.

From your build pics I am guessing that you have good wood working skills. Do you think you would be able fashion by yourself something similar (to what you have in the picture)? Basically a truncated circle with bars - a router, drill, and metal rods should do it.

The "base" can be made from 3-6 mm acrylic... on second thoughts, the entire grill can be made from laser cut acrylic (I think)...

The F5 would drive them well, and is a considerable step up in both quality but also difficulty of assembly as well as cost. That said, i doubt you'd be unhappy with one, and while the build can be daunting at first it is not unreasonably difficult, especially if you get the pre-drilled and tapped Deluxe chassis.

Depending on what difficulty level you're comfortable with you might also consider something like a icepower amp - ghent audio on ebay makes some nice pre-made chassis, with options for stereo or monoblock construction. Many positive reviews for the icepower amps (50asx2 is a good option for reasonable power and price). The TPA325x also have quite a following. I've built a few and they sound good and have gobs of power.

In class A/B land there are the LM3886 options. I dont know about kits, but you might look at Tom Christensen's Neurochrome stuff, probably the best performance you can squeeze from that chip and you have access to top notch support from the developer himself. There are also the gainclones, as well as simpler LM3886 implementations. I have only heard the open source LM3886 layout, but i am very happy with how that sounds.

My main amp is still the F6. Something special about these firstwatt offerings for sure...
