Folks, I have a question for you.
After reading all 178 pages and more, it could be fun to build something completely different. An open baffle speaker is something else.
Is building the Mazanitas, the Ultras, or any OB speaker in general, a waste of time if the speaker must be placed no more than 2 feet from the back wall?
My living room is approximately 50m2. My Asathor speakers are a closed box and play nice close to the wall. I am satisfied with Asathor, but I need a new project. You know how it is 🙂

I'd not seen the Asathor thread before you mentioned it. Killer speaker. I'm fond of many horn/waveguide speakers and those look great.
Not sure if open baffle speakers are a waste of time when they are only a few feet from the wall but they really aren't going to shine. Their tonal balance falls into place as they get further out.
You might be OK putting them on wheels and pulling them out just when you want to listen closely and then pushing them back when you're done.

Yes many photos show OBs in the corner or next to the wall. They become random effect synthesizers that way, obviously some people like that too. 😎
I guess they feel like superior hifists when they can detect the difference in sound and imaging etc. after moving the speaker a few centimeters...

The TC9FD18 and GRS 15PT-8 are on their way. I've not yet decided what kind of series inductor to order for the woofer. I understand the importance of the air coil's DC resistance and will not cheap out.
Please help me decide:
1) Jantzen Iron Core Coil With Discs 20mH, 15AWG, 0,53Ω: €125
2) Mundorf MCoil BS140, 22mH, 15AWG, 0,56 Ohm: €140
3) Jantzen C-Coil 20,0mH, 17AWG, 0,3Ohm: €158

not much of a difference so I'll go with the cheapest one.
unless you think 0.23 ohms is worth 33 Euro extra

@hammerz 18mH should be fine (70 Euro). 22mH (75 Euro) is available on order.

Theoretically yes, but... with 22 mH you get deeper end, but the difference is not that much.
I've tried iron core, toroid and foil for this position and for the others too in my OB, and I now only use foil inductors.
But it's of course a matter of taste.

We are seeking a coil of about 22-24mH and the lowest possible DC resistance, right?
Is the construction principle relevant to the result?
Pardon my lack of knowledge.

An 18 mh coil will low pass at about 70 hz.
A 20 mh coil will low pass just under 64 hz.
A 22 mh coil will low pass at about 58 hz.
I can't predict, nor have I heard, the difference between them in a Manzi or Ultra build. There are various postings in this thread with folks using one of these three choices. Shadowplay62 just posted a link to one answer and here's a link to another.
There doesn't appear to be a definitive answer but most hover in the 18 to 20 mh range ... and some go up to 22.

Hello.... will review my notes... built so many versions, Talking about the woofer trap..IIRC, the 15 uf cap & parallel 0.4 mh inductor are wired in series with the large 16-22 mh low pass inductor. As Pano stated, for most, a 18-20 mh low pass is a good compromise. As for the Vifa trap... a good compromise is 2.5 uh inductor and 12 or 15 ohms based on your personal sonic discretion.

Thanks for the info. I understand there's so many ways around the barn and no reason to worry about the perfect inductance. An 18 mh coil will low pass at about 70 hz.
A 20 mh coil will low pass just under 64 hz.
A 22 mh coil will low pass at about 58 hz.
I've read every post in this long thread and taken notes.
«the inductor ought to be 22-24mH»
«18-20 mh low pass is a good compromise.»
«15 Mh up to 24 Mh will work well»
I thought I found some contradictions, but 17 years is a long time. Different drivers and different designs.

Hi
Lurking on this nice simple OB, I might start but first I need to verify the availability of all components.
The GRS woofer and TC9 are available from Solen, great.
My concern is for the big 20mH inductor, Super coils from Erse are hard to find, did someone try the Hammond 159ZE ? It’s a 28mH, 3A, 0.43 DCR coil. These are easily available to me.
The Ultra seems to big so I’d go with the regular size baffle but with the 15” woofer since the Peerless 12” is not available (unless you buy 2000 of them)
Thanks
Eric

Eric you may be in mostly uncharted waters with DC power chokes in a low pass crossover.
However, check this thread. Some report of success.

Erse is out of business. U.S. Coils makes a 20mh inductor but shipping can be expensive depending on where you live.My concern is for the big 20mH inductor, Super coils from Erse are hard to find, did someone try the Hammond 159ZE ? It’s a 28mH, 3A, 0.43 DCR coil. These are easily available to me.
The Ultra is a big speaker. Even though it doesn't have a lot of depth it tends to dominate the room visually when it's out 3 or 4 feet from the wall. Or at least it does in my house as the rooms aren't all that big.The Ultra seems to big so I’d go with the regular size baffle but with the 15” woofer since the Peerless 12” is not available (unless you buy 2000 of them)

The stand mounted Manzi is far less overwhelming visually.
Good luck with your build. Please post photos!
Thanks for the info about Erse.
U.S. coils is out of stock on most 16awg coils from 18-22mH, I’ll check occasionally. Shipping is surprisingly cheap at $25 to Canada.
I already own an OB which is bigger than the Ultra😀

Instead of buying expensive components for a passive x-over, did someone use let’s say a MiniDSP and if so how can the passive x-over be added into the DSP, ex
