DIY Small Panel Projector

Never mind the ostrich. How about the strip show?!

You folks in Sweden are having way too much fun!😀

I believe the glass is the same in all. The only difference is that sandwiched between each prism is a half-mirror that allows the previous color to pass through, while stopping the next color in the order to shine back that way. Forcing the light to be projected into the next triangular prism.

Basically, the half-mirror keeps specific wavelength's of light moving forward and in that NEC projector, rotating clockwise. If the half-mirror wasn't there between the red and blue, the blue light would bounce back into the red and out the red lcd panel.

Light always takes a 45 degree right turn when entering a prism. Also, the light entering into the red prism goes to the right and bounces off a full-mirror coating applied to that side. And, I believe there is a baffle sandwiched between both the red and white-light prism as well as the full-mirror (maybe it's a half-mirror ,though), to protect any red-light that could pass through (mirrors don't reflect all light, all the time-not perfect!?) into the white prism and corrupt the image.
(It would make sense too if that mirror was a half-mirror for red reflection. That way it's still maintaining the red color ONLY reflections, just in case there were other stray light wavelength's somehow entering. That would further explain the reason for the baffle there.)

Regarding 3 Panel LCD Prism:

Correction, the half-mirror's in the prism above are actually using "thin-film" technology. Apparently, it has the same effect, but by using a certain material that blocks specific wavelength's due to it's 'thin-ness'. It's not "half-mirror" technology. Thanks R!

Couldn't find anymore of those Cybermaxx panels at that website. Where did you purchase yours Atomos? Also, I wonder if we can print up the boards required? For $15 and some work hours though, that's not too bad! Just have to do some etching and soldering.

Here is an old picture of a three CRT RGB 'Recombiner'. This one does use half-mirror's (From U.S. Precision, now of Corning. They made the Delta lenses for Barco and other's).

Atomos, it would only cost about $20-50 to buy the supplies to make the board. Unless you could use a friends or local college's for free. What was your plan on making the board? Will that site offer to give you the board layout etching pattern they designed? I believe I saw the schematic, but not the actual board layout. They may sell their boards somewhere as well as a parts bag. Worth a try emailing 'em, maybe cheaper and quicker than making the board yourself and purchasing the parts.

rmcoll, I have not tried LabMetal paste. I couldn't find any information on its conducting properties. Since it hardens to metal it wouldn't be ideal for the areas that need to be flexible. Have you used this or seen any info on its properties?

The two I mentioned from Loctite seem to be expressly made for Ribbon-Cable repair, one being flexible and the other for applying to glass. However, if I had the paste around I would be interested in checking it out (or in a pinch), to see how it compares. The Loctite one comes with a precise needle-like syringe too, so I can pretend I'm a mad scientist or Igor...'yezzzs MA-zzster!'

I'm really looking for a high res solution if I'm going to build a projector. For those who are looking for the same:
link
A company named Telex stopped producing lcd projectors, actually it seems they rebadged some from other manufacturers. That page says that they want to maintain warranty service. Contacts for replacement parts are:
NorthEast: Michael Oliver (973) 575-0380 (ext 310)
South/Central: Leo Bull (678) 474-4770
Midwest: Les Murphy (440) 953-9071
West: Michael Gleason (973) 575-0380 (ext 311)
You can also fax requests if you're outside the US.

Some of the models have xga single panel LCD's but many are the 3 panel variety.
ProjectorCentral has information on some of their models.

thanks, Telex used to manufacture slide projectors

Then they went out of business, end of last year.

How do you get a price on the lcd one's they're selling? It looks like they have info, but aren't actually selling them.

The firefly has a ~6.5" single xga panel with 60-100:1 contrast ratio. Not sure about the the 3 panel one's, probably much nicer than that one and more expensive. A zillion 3 panel types on ebay. A giant wish-list.

Remp, that's what I figured for projector's on Ebay. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. A gamble...

Atomos, good work! Sorry to sound negative, but you must build the board and hope that it will do the job! They don't show anymore work done since last year! Maybe, they decided it's not good!? Why did the site stop posting?! Maybe, they felt it's not useable. They have updated the site for now, but they don't say what is going on at this moment for them. Been a year now for them........maybe they think it's not fruitfull?!

Hadn't had a look at the Ebay projectors

I was able to find quite a few LCD and CRT types for ~$250US. Mostly 3 panel designs of the LCD. Some state problems, some don't. You might get lucky and some allow return too.
Things to be aware of are the bulb-life, mis-alignment problems and dead-pixel's. The first two should be replaceable/fixable and the latter up to you, if it would bother you or not.
Don't forget to price the bulb to see what it would cost you. Many are probably near the end of their bulb-life.

Home again, Home again, jiggety-jig!

I will receive the conducting epoxy from Loctite this Wednesday. By Friday I should finally have some pics to post of my "small-panel" projections! All right, keep the roar down.

If I'm lucky I'll have the two of them fixed and projecting. Then, I can start pretending I'm in the war room at NORAD or the Bookies room in 'Vegas. Oh boy, oh boy!

If I had a two or even one more, maybe I could make an enclosure of front projection panels (semi-clear shower curtains? Or, whatever) with me inside and make a "Freak-out" box. Something like the "Tabernacle" in ZARDOZ. I'm such a little kid!😛
Or, maybe a 3-sided triangle shaped enclosure! The secret power of the pyramids! 'Not only will it sharpen razor blades or preserve fruit, it will alter the mind!" Vegans will buy them by the dozens! But, what would I project? Mayan ruins? Nazca drawings? Crop circle's? UFO's? Nekid Druid lasses at Stonehenge?
Aww gee, I gotta quit...
