Curt Campbell's Halcyon build thread

Nice! Here is some info, I did a fairly basic build and it worked out well. Here are a few things that I had to do some research on. Maybe this will save you time.

I used the 6.0V zeners in all four positions (Z1 & Z2)
Zenmod recommends 3.3k resistors for R7 & R8 (I am ordering parts to swap them out) the kit comes with another value
6L6 recommends 110 ohm resistors in in R11 and R12. The kit comes with 47uf. You can add these to your power supply order. I belive the BOM for the power supply is set up for Digikey.

Here is the power supply that I ordered:
AS-4218 - 400VA 18V x2 / 18V - 0 - 18V Audio Amplifier Power Transformer | eBay
This seems like a really good deal and it arrived quickly. This power supply is widely used and very quiet. More than capable of powering this amp and then some.

This is a link to the caps that I used used:Access to this page has been denied.

The above link was suggested by 6L6 at one point. Someone had explained how the 15000uf units were already more than adequate by a significant amount. Any bigger than 18000uf and you start to run into other issues.

Don't forget the CL-60's.

Again, separating the diode side of the board and going with the little diode bricks should be an easier way to do things. Although the little heatsinks are pretty cool looking. The heatsinks on the diodes get hot so I assume they consume a decent amount of power.

Let me know if you need any pics or more info. A lot of the above applies to the F5 amp.

Also, the Deluxe chassis is very easy to work with. I ordered better feet from Parts express as the ones it comes with are kind of cheesy although they do work.

Just stuffed the rest of the fill in for a total of 2.5 lb per cabinet, 1.25 lb behind each woofer. Might be packed too tight. It flows out to the end of the middle shelf. Easy enough to pull back out and refill. Critical listening later tonight but enjoying just having it on.

Added another pound of acousta-stuf to each cabinet so up to 3.5 lb per side. Balanced operation of the amps led to a very tubby sound. The extra stuffing has cleaned it up a little bit. Still have to test the response with the amps in parallel mono where the output impedance is a bit more favourable.

The stuffing can be seen at the throat of the port but the flat black paint on the ports helps hide it. Don't think I can put anymore in without starting to pack it.

I'm surprised nobody has recommended building an Aleph J. 6L6 says it's his favorite of the Pass DIY amps. Furthermore, there is a fantastic "Build Guide for Noobs" created by FLOHMANN that makes it almost foolproof. No need to read 200 pages of build threads. I built mine in a couple of evenings and it started up and ran perfectly first try. There is a complete BOM for Mouser, a complete list of tools and miscellaneous parts, etc. I take a little credit for the build guide because I initiated the idea in a post about a year ago. FLOHMANN did all the work and it's absolutely marvelous. Very well-thought-out, beautifully written, and quite comprehensive.

I will hook the Aleph J to the Halcyons one of these days and report back. I assume it will be fabulous, but it sounds so nice in the office, I haven't tried it downstairs yet.

The F5 and F6 as well as the M2X are on the list. The Aleph J hasn't been a strong candidate due to the published 4 Ohm load capability. However, I'd like to get your experience. Theory is nice but practice usually wins. And with what Mikerodrig27 relayed and other descriptions I've read, the F6 is leading the pack right now.

The refund for the fancy feet hit my paypal. I'm looking to order parts Sunday night as the refund is more than enough to cover boards and components for both the signal and PSU and possibly the power xformer.

I have Aleph J boards i think. This amp might be considered an important step towards the FirstWatt SITs, and now diyAudio will see a large numbe rof variations on Nelson’s new VFET output stages which i think could take top honours.

I wonder if any current manufacturer can make audio SITs/VFETs and how many you’d have to get them to maketo get any? And i remember Nelson’s trick he showed at a BAF on making a MOSFET look a lot like a SIT, which could be pushed given the scarixity of the preferred output devices.

This happened. Looks like F6 it is. Chassis are on next month's budget which is commencing in 7 days...

Thanks for the thoughts shared. Digging thru the various threads yielded less than what your post relayed. I did find one mention of a huge soundstage which I'm hoping means the nature of the Halcyons will really shine.

I do keep getting the thought popping up of doing an open baffle with the MarkAudio Alpair 10p coupled with some high efficiency 10" woofers. But, one step at a time and no need to over complicate...

I have not been overly impressed with OBs but i have one more in me… tentatively A0p + 4 x 10” per side.

Illustration from before i figured out where to put the 2 extra woofers (slot load them Pass style — something i conceived of before Nelson’s SLOB article).
