Celibidache NOS DAC

What I mean is the audible sensation of the recorded space. I like listening to choral works quite a lot and on YT they're often held in cathedrals or similar spaces. I very much enjoy the acoustic of such places, the long reverberation decays. There needs to be very low low-frequency noise from a DAC for these cues to become clearly apparent.

Does that help?

I don't know how much of a 'thing' ambience retrieval is in the audiophile world. Last night I was at a demo by ESD Acoustics which is an audiophile manufacturer just down the road from me here. Here's their website - http://www.esdacoustics.com. A complete system from them is crazy money, they use field coil drivers and large horns. But at the demo the system did almost nothing in the ambience retrieval stakes, the stereo image had virtually zero depth.

Finished building the kit. It sounds nice. Sound stage a bit more 3 dimensional than the PhiDeca DAC. That is just from a quick listen, need to spend more time listening. Assembly was simple and went together with no problems. Photo is a temporary setup powered by my bench power supply. Will post more pictures when in a permanent case

Progress so far, boards and power supplies in the case. Awaiting on back panel from Front panel Express. Also awaiting some display option to try. Once I decide on the display I want to use, I will design and have the front panel fabricated. The DAC power supply is an AMB Labs sigma 11 and the SPDIF board power supply is an AMB Labs sigma 25.

The best part is the DAC sounds great!

Listened to both the Celibidache and the Phideca Dac toady. Played same music on both. They are more similar than different. I found the Celibidache to be more "accurate" with voices sounding slightly more realistic and an improved sound stage. The Phideca dac sounded a little warmer than the Celibidache. I liked both and differences are not great.

As a disclaimer I like to say I listen to a $10,000 stereo system with $100 ears. You may hear something completely different than I did. Bottom line, I like both DACs, and would be happy with either one.

You have the Deca MkII Debra right? I think a comparison with an original Deca would reveal a significant difference in the HF. I agree the difference between Celibidache and Deca MkII is not great but centres on improved low frequency imaging and slightly improved dynamics.

For this listen I was using an Elekit TU-8500 preamp and TU-8200r (lundahl output transformers) 6l6 amp. Both of them I recently built. Both for the price sound nice. I have yet to try the DAC with my Bottlehead Kaiju 300b SET amp.

I really like building amps and other electronics so I’m always building something new.
