I was having some trouble determining the focal lengths of lens, I wasn't happy with the results of holding it in the sun and measuring the distance to the point on the ground, I then remembered good ol' high school physics class, I found this page which is very similar to an experiment that I had done in high school with a flash light, a metre stick and a piece of bristol board, take a look, its the second experiment on the page, hope someone could use it!

The lcd I am using was $199, but I originally was using it in my car for about 6 months before I even thought to build a projector. So seeing as I already owned it, I purchased this overhead,3M 1730 , from Staples. No mods other than stripping the lcd. Add in a piece of blackout cloth and the total cost was about $500. Or $300 considering I already had the lcd.
Since I have the OHP, I am upgrading to a 15" soon. I just acquired an old All-In-Wonder 128 Pro to put in my HTPC, and just need to find a monitor to strip. Retrofit a MH into the OHP and it should be sweet! Then I think my little 7" will get built into a compact pj for the bedroom!

Alright... I just want to say I've gained so much knowledge about optical technology in the past week its sick, I've been sorting through these boards for about 5 or 6 hours a day all week (I love my job!). Thanks to all who have helped me.
I do have a problem though, I'm having trouble finding a piece of UV reflective glass. Where is everyone getting theirs? is there a practical application out there somewhere that I hi-jack a piece from?
If anyone has any ideas just let me know! or if I have to break down and buy a piece, where can I find one?
Thanks

I'm sure someone might want to see this, it helped me understand light and optics a whole lot more, enjoy!

from what i hear you can get Lexan at a place like Home Depot. One side is coated to block UV. You face the coated side toward the light. It comes in all sorts of sizes. There are instructions right on it.
anyone try this?
I have read this all over the place in hear too, I have a friend that works at home depot, I called him and asked him to round up any scrap pieces that people have left behind after having they had it cut, I'll let you guys know how it works out tonite!

question for you Canadians that bought a metal halide setup in canada...i found one at a local hydroponics store...its got everything i need to make the bulb turn on ..its 400W and they want $180 CND (+tax) that sound resonable????
not too bad, but i paid $140 + tax. i got the 400W MH compact style bulb, socket, ballast and cap. i live in Sudbury, Ontario.
the first bulb i bought came from a hydroponics dealer too and they really soaked me!! $220+. i was so angry when i found this local electrical store.

check with electrical supply stores, if they don't carry them, then ask if they know of some place that does.
these 400W MH's are pretty common, just gotta find who is selling them.

local hydroponics store....all i need is a bulb..cause the bulb he had seems to be huge might have to get the home depot one..but i got a few questions about the 400W home depot bulbs:
1) what is the length of the home depot bulb?
2) what is the diameter of the screw part?
3) what make it is?
