Brilliancy in Sport, Your favourite moments

Major excitement in Portsmouth, Hampshire UK, today.

As a Portsmouthian resident I have to admit my loyalty extends to childhood Cricket team Somerset! My Team.

Sir Vivian Richards, Ian Botham, Joel Garner, Roy Virgin, Dasher Denning an' all that. :D

We have restricted Hampshire to 190-6 in 20 overs.

I am hopeful we can knock that target off if we don't lose any early wickets. Then onto the final against Lancashire.

Somerset - La - La - La!

About time we won something.

Oh Dear. It's all over. Somerset all out for 153 against Hampshire.

Too slow a start IMO. Always chasing the target.

I am going to get so much sarcasm from my Hampshire Cricketing friend Ashley in Tesco tomorrow.

Please God, let Lancashire win the Final. My only hope. :D

Very excited today. It's Ascot horseracng and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes! A Class 1 race which pits the best 3-y-o's against older but stellar horses.

A field of six. Prize money is huge. Even the fourth wins £67,000:

I have already bought my copy of the racegoers newspaper, The Sun:

Situation is we have the following horses in the Ascot 15.35:

Broome
Mishriff
Pyledriver
Torquator Tasso
Westover
Emily Upjohn (A Filly)

They are all good except Broome, IMO.

I am on the outsider. The People's horse, Pyledriver at 25-1 appeals at 50p EW. Now trained by Willie Muir. Torquator Tasso at 10-1 worth a quid too.

I got a bit carried away at the Betfred bookies this morning.

What a race at Ascot, in the 15.35. Ground Good to Firm. Gonna be Hot.

Hedged my bet with a £1 on Mishriff at 3-1. £1 EW on the prodigious big Pyledriver, a horse used to hot weather. Last time out was a good second in the Hong Kong Vase IIRC.

German horse Torquator sits on £1 win.

We must wait and see. I am going for age over youth.

My wife and I are TdF fanatics. Coverage on French TV is great but like most sports commentators, the French ones have verbal poo in spades. This year has been fantastic. To see Tom Pidcock (Olympic and World Champion mountain biker wipe the floor with his Alpe d'Huez stage win was incredible in his first TdF.

But the cracker was the true sportmanship displayed by the Dane, Jonas Vingegaard and the Slovenian, Tadej Pogacar on the 19th stage was something you don't often see. The resilience of Wout van Aert has been astounding as has the whole Jumbo team.

This must have been the driest TdF in years and the hottest. It was 5 years ago now that the Tour came past our front door and the level of emotion by spectators is something else when the gendarmes shout out - "here they come". When they came round the corner, which could have been a huge chute if it had been raining, even our two dogs watching from the upstairs kitchen window barked like crazy as seen on French TV.

If you want to see just how beautiful a lot of France is (helicoptor TV) watch the Tour on French TV.

Didn't John Salako play for my beloved Sky Blues? Coventry City F.C.?

Hate to brag, but I got the 1-2-3 in the big race at Ascot today! Pyledriver, Torquator Tasso and Mishriff.

PYLEDRIVER, in the red cap and green shirt, got it at long odds around 22-1, to the shock of the racing community. Big wiinings at £1 EW!

Happy Days. :D

An enjoyable morning at the Betfred bookies. I just wandered in to collect my considerable winnings on the illustrious Pyledriver. in the huge King George Vi at Ascot.

Won two races out of three when I have been on it.

£25 quid for £4, shorter than I hoped for. But OK.

As usual, I studied the form on the betting screens. "Nuit St Georges" is running in the 6.40 at Galway in Ireland today:

I always like horses named after Fine Wines from France. Bergerac Rouge turned out to be a winner!

£1 EW. Paying the first five places. Wait and See! I am feeling confident in some minor return. :)

Tomorrow is Glorious Goodwood at Chichester. My local track. Haven't decided on anything yet. Stradivarius and Baeed. What's not to like?

Ah well. Nuit St Georges turned out to be a Busted Flush. Came Twelfth or something. I can live with it.

Major Race today is the Goodwood 15,35! Huge prize money in this Class 1 Race:

Naturally, I could be wrong, but I think it's between Kyprios and Trueshan, I think Stradivarius is past his excellent best. Gonna bet on them both.

That's it. :)

Another winner for system7! The lovely Ruth and Wendy dishing out the tickets at Betfred Bookies in Southsea today.

Put £2 on hot favourite Kyprios. An Aidan O'Brien horse.

Forgoed or is it forwent Miss. Hollie Doyle on Trueshan. Much as I am for equality. Never sentimental.

3-2 winner. Excellent, if not something to write home about. The Strad came second. :D

In 1963 I was 19 and it was Brighton races, I was working so I could'nt go, I lived in Hove. I used to study deeply and input mentally the stats. This day I did a 10 shillings to win , 4 horse accumulator and my nap £1 each way - Eight Draws. In the second race I confused an Epsom specialist with a Brighton one and crossed out my first choice.

After work I walked into the bookies, saw the results board and said in a very loud voice F~#K IT. My nap Eight Draws came in @ 100/8, a place in those days was a quarter of the odds so I won £15,12 shillings and sixpence ( I was earning then £6 per week). In the 1st race I had the winner @ 10/1, the 2nd - my first choice came in @ 10/1, the 3rd race, my nap @100/8 and the 4th @ 10/1. So with my nap I would have won just over £10,000.

In those days you could buy a very nice house for under £5,000 which I would have done for my mum and dad and sister to live in, invested £3,000 in the Midland & General unit Trust (the first one in the world) and some other high dividend FTSE 100 companies, investing the dividends and swanned off right around the world with £2,000 via Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, NZ, Oz, Canada and the USA - I might never have made it home again. At that time you could live on 2 shillings a day in India. In Afghanistan the very best Mazar a Sharif was pennies per ounze and there was no bloody mass tourism. In fact there was virtually no tourism anywhere - and I changed the name of just one horse - so it goes.

Very annoying.
I remember doing something similar at Sandown, albeit on a smaller scale. My selection criteria that day was a lot simpler, a tenner to win on Ian Baldings horses.
Come the last race I was about evens. This was a jumps meeting, but the last race was a NH flat race for novices. Ian Balding had a runner called Java Queen, which I decided I really didn't fancy, so I went on something else.
Of course Java Queen walked it, won by something like ten lengths at 40-1

I used to put bets on that frightened my father. I remember having a good day and it was the last day at a jump meeting and I saw a horse, it's first outing called Arcturus - sod ti I decided to put £10 each way - it romped home at 33-1 - the bookie was sick as the proverbial.

There was a big Insurance office just across the road and sometimes some of the staff would come over. One day two secretaries came over with a boss. I remember they looked down their noses at me, I was 18 and as I bent down to retrieve a betting slip the back pocket on my jeans burst open and a few hundred pounds scattered all over the floor - you should have seen their faces. In those days to take home £20 a week meant you were on good money. They both began to smile at me, I remember looking at them with total contempt.
