3A 5V is fine USB PSU is fine. Continuity is the Ohms of audible continuity check. On my Fluke it has the “Omega” for ohms and the “sonar wave” symbol for audible check (under 10ohms).
As Planst10 suggests, a FH3 or FHXL is also very nice sounding. A bit bigger and needs space behind it to sound great though. I built a mini version once with TC9 and really liked the sound.

I have a thought. Make a Karl on top of a floor standing box with some bipolar bass drivers, 1st order crossover. Shouldn’t be hard to do with all the small drivers for Karls. The bottom can be sealed, ported, whatever you feel like. Perhaps horn/TL if you’re tube guy, ported for SS or tube.
Danger,
You built the speaker in photo? Looks very nice!
Thanks!
Yes I build them by myself.
Thanks D M & all contributors.
Some impressive designs.
At this stage I've started collecting the parts for the Karlsonator.
Firstly I love discovering and appreciate new (to me) designs.
Maybe a reference for a future project.

Hi X.
I've started collecting for the Karlsonater project.
The 4 x TC9FD18-8's arrived today.
One of the drivers appears to be off centre in relation to its mounting plate.
In one photo attached the speaker cone is mounted fairly evenly to its mounting plate.
On the other the speaker cone is affixed off centre.
Notice on one edge the foam surround is right up against the mounting plate, while on the other edge there is wide gap.
Should I be worried about this driver?
Will it affect performance?
thanks

Btw, I have heard a PS95-8 on OB with bass assist. Super combo.
For the Karlsonators, an OB woofer with same 15in eminence would sound superb.
Hi X.
Are you referring to this driver?

Most people go for the Alpha, with its higher Qts number, on OB.
Eminence Alpha 15A - 15" 200 Watt Bass and PA speaker | The Speaker Factory
Perceval has got the correct woofer - the Emminence 15in Alpha.
However, almost any low cost high Qts driver can work. Large 15in moves the air you need for bass. But combining a bunch of low cost 12in, 10in, 8in, 6.5in high Qts woofers to get at least same area as a 15in is what you need. I did it with 6 slot loaded 6.5in $5 drivers once and it sounded marvelous.
There is a low cost GRS 15in woofer that is popular too - look in the Manzanita thread.

The sub is to compliment the Karlsonator 0.53's with the twin parallel TC9FD18-08's.
Because the recommended Polk 10 sub is expensive to land in Australia the Emminence 15in Alpha @ AUD$199 is relatively cheap in comparison with low shipping.
I don't have the experience and confidence to get involved with multi drivers and can get lost with the jargon used.
Will it be simpler to go for the Emminence?
If so what kind of structure, wiring & XO will be needed to integrate it sub with the Karlsonators?
At this stage I'm planning to drive it all with the Dayton Audio DTA-120B, although I'm told that class D Amps sound dry and lack in bass??
cheers

If you don’t get a standalone sub like the Polk, you need to consider cost of a cabinet and amp for the sub plus a crossover. Your costs mitigated by not getting a ready made HT style sub will be lost and exceeded by the full blown sub DIY project.
You could get a 2.1 Class D amp with sub woofer output and active crossover built into the amp. Such amps are not expensive - but the sub using a 15in woofer is quite large of going open baffle.
My suggestion is to look in OZ for any brand of home theater integrated sub woofer and go that route. You won’t save any money making your own sub/xo/amp etc. plus it requires a bit of experience - unless someone has full plans for you to go with.
If you are able to get Dayton Audio stuff with reasonable shipping, get a Dayton home theater sub. I believe this is an equivalent product to the Polk PSW10. It should work very well as it has all the same features in an integrated ready to run package for $120 (not including shipping). The reviews on this unit are all very good - I think it will be perfect (one of the Q&A technical questions was whether or not it is compatible with DTA-120, yes it has been verified to work together).

Thanks for your assistance X.
Your input and expertise is invaluable.
Alas Dayton products seem to be U.S. based.
A quick google revealed either "don't ship to Australia", or anything up to US$1,150 shipping.
My experience is that shipping prices that U.S. vendors quote are insane.
If Trump wants to get America working again he should investigate USPS tariffs and practices.
They are a mill stone around your countries neck.
We have Emminence suppliers over here but as you say, the associated set up makes this option an issue.
I'll just have to keep looking for some kind of sub which is sonically acceptable but includes the specs my system needs. 🙁
I thought it might have been doable since you could get the DT120. Sorry about the crazy shipping prices - maybe AliExpress might have something. They typically charge no more than $100 shipping on heavy items. But I guess depends on weight and this is a big item. Dayton products are often made in Taiwan. It would probably be more economical for it to come from there direct rather than cross the pacific twice.
I remembered seeing that cheap woofer the other day:
Lautsprecher Shop | Eminence Alpha 15 Tieftoner | Lautsprecher Selbstbau
edit* Price is € 63 for buyers outside EU/Europe (VAT is included in €79), cheap woofers

Its worth a try, but anything Dayton doesn't come up on aliexpress.
I'm just wondering that they may market this product by a different name to overcome competition issues.
But an example is 10 times more expensive than the Dayton.
I think contractually the Chinese aren't allowed to compete???

I don’t mean Dayton. Just *any* fully boxed ready to go home theater style sub with built in amp.
I know this is car audio but it has amp and crossover built in. You need an external 12v PSU - a rather beefy one. But, one way to do it is use a gel cell 12v with lots of amperage capability connected to a small wall plug trickle charger.

Free shipping to US anyhow. Not sure what happens when you ship to OZ.

Those examples certainly help to get back within budget.
I'm thinking though, my original goal was to set up an outstanding hifi system at a threshold price.
Are these aliexpress car subwoofers a big compromise and will I end up with something pedestrian?
Also, if I went for the Eminence Alpha route, could the cabinet be of inexpensive open back construction, and could it be powered by Class D amp other than the Dayton Audio DTA-120BT which includes a sub amp stage?
