Well I have to say that my discrete VAS is certainly more realistic for my ears and long term listening more bearable. LME driver is not bad at all, it gives you more "instant" solution, easy approach to high power, very dynamic, fast and a little bit edgey sound. But certainly better than any D class amp, bacause there is no loss of fine detail and imaging.

I would recommend LME for a good studio monitor driver, strong PA amp and of course home Hi-Fi. This is completely subjective opinion of mine and it depends on what you've heard so far. :hphones:

Thanks Lazy Cat

Here's a little bit of information. Mark, who was with National, had the following to say about the LME49810 and LME49811.

What do you think ...

The LME49810 was designed as higher output current driver for live music amplifiers and has 50 ma of output current. To get the extra output current (the LME49811 has 7ma) an A/B output stage was added to that part (the 811 has a class A output stage). There were also some minor changes made to the input stage on the LME49811 (one was a suggestion by Bob Pease which is a great story I might tell everyone sometime). I prefer the sound of the LME49811 to the 810 (I did listen to both parts on the same circuit board with minor changes) but they are very close to each other. If you need more than 300w I would use the 810. For 300w or less the 811 is the way to go.

National's listening room used Wilson's Watt Puppies model 7's and B&W 802D's as well. They were all driven by a set of LME49811 power amps I designed (and benchtester and I built together) and a D/A preamp I also designed. You can search National Semiconductor Sound Room / for more info on the room (and me) ... or here are a few web references on the National Room and other LME parts info.

I'm glad to see that some activities are still going on. 😀

Congratulations Bora, push CROSER design to a good reliable amp, maybe a new milestone in amps for the masses. I'll be in touch at ACCO Forum shortly just to say hello. :wave2:

Lars what's up with your tube BIGBT design? Please give us some info. :magnify:

Just had to play around a little more😀.

With a very simple thermal compensation it seems to behave perfect, slightly negative up to over 150degrees C.

Also changed the input stage to SE as the overtone structure was with to much even overtones.

Even in Class- AB with 200mA Iq/transistor it looks good.

Anyway it sims beautiful, maybe one should have a go.........

One should have a go soon, yes?

CROSER design

As I promised, here are files of CROSER amp. It has been designed as my respect for good friends and audiophiles on Croatian "ACCO Forum" and they are reporting excellent results!

Hi Boro!
Why did you decide to use CCS driven emitter followers (2sa1407/2sc3601) to drive IRF610/9610 - I mean, VAS transistors (2sa1360/2sc3423) run on about 4.5 mA - it is enough to drive IRFs directly (they have Ciss of only 140/170 pF). One stage less might be beneficial soundwise 😉
Thanks for numerous gifts!
Prijateljski pozdrav 🙂

Edit: What was the amp's load when taking those scope shots?

Hi juma!
Well, let mi say first, I am one of those ridiculous designers that realy don’t like elaborating and discussing own designs in public very much.

Intention was to isolate pre-stages as much as possible, and frankly, no degradation has been observed so fare.
“One stage less might be beneficial sound wise” – might be… maybe worth trying, but I am neither a particular fan, nor a follower of minimalist approach of a style: less components or less stages –> must be better sounding. Life is never that simple unfortunately.

To prevent possibility to be misinterpreted, I have to say I don’t approve opposite approach either!

Good audio design is a game of “fine balance”.

I don't think boraomega will change his design. Anyone can do it for himself and test the results on new version of the schematics. We have many options to elaborate given designs or even think about something completely new. :wiz:

As I mentioned before this thread is welcoming all fresh ideas implementing BIGBT output stage. And the beauty of it is just how easy you can drive it, therefore VAS can be a step simpler than usual.

Name is coming from names of our two countries: CROatia-SERbia. I am trying to extend and offer a "friendly hand" to my friends in Croatia. There are excellent and valuable people everywhere (as well as bad ones) and I am trying to make bridges between those worth sincere friendship!

Izvrsno!
