Wow! Beautiful and very clean build ChromeNuts!!! The creative touches are so well executed. This is definitely off the Fugly scale!

Hi WillThat's a good question. Take a look at figure 3 taken from the article "Leaving Class A" from Mr. Pass. You tell me.... What does increasing the bias current do??? (pro tip... we run our stuff with as much bias as the hardware will take, but not so high that devices fail. Goal is fantastic sound....forever....)
Thanks for the input.
So it looks like upping the Iq will get me lower distortion…seems like a no brainer.
I suppose that is across the board regarding all types of distortion…including the second and/or third harmonic that seems to often be the subject of discussion regarding how an amp either sounds warm or analytical.
Makes me wonder if anyone ever regrets losing their distortion 😉

Thanks…makes me feel good that others appreciate that.
It’s a good portion of the time and work I put into these projects and helps to make it a satisfying experience for me.
The article is worth a read, as are all of the rest of them. I believe you would find some interesting commentary directly pertaining to the question about how the high and low order distortion is affected with different levels of bias.Hi Will

there is that article, but observe that Pa is having few amps with surprisingly low(ered) Iq, comparing to usual drill
and he's not exactly yelling in Public with exact figure ....... so there are some exceptions to rule, and reasons most likely all explained in Sweet Spot article
besides articles on FW/Articles page, worth investigating all Products Manuals (each Product page/manual enclosed) and thinking about figures given in them
but there is Caveat - always think twice about figures Pa gives in his Manuals - there are sometimes some discrepancies for which I have or not have explanation, but learned with time to count on possibility of finding them
almost as he's not doing them deliberately, but deliberately allowing possibility of leaving them in, when made ......... just another way of making Greedy Boyz on tip of their toes
and we know who's Most Greedy of Them All
moral of the story/rant - yeah, more the Iq, the merrier; but once when you start dealing with THD Spectra measurements, start taking Dr. Haus life philosophy as one of stances worth investigating, if nothing else ........ accent being on investigating, varying all sorts of things you can think of, then using both your measurement gear and ears to draw some conclusions
in the end, Myths are funny (especially Audiophool ones, in most cases) but facts are heavy

Thanks twitchie and ZM
I have read over some of the material in these articles.
Again, it often is a situation where a language I don’t fully understand is being spoken.
I am looking at this project as an opportunity to investigate things first hand and try to make my own conclusions.
That is why I built everything to be taken apart and changed out more easily.
I expect, at the very least, to have a version with Semisouth down (at some point) to compare.
Also, now that I have an amp capable of producing this kind of heat, building some baby sitters is a given and will allow me to experiment more with Iq.

So…being sometimes more lazy than greedy…I wanted to share this.
Hoping its related enough for the thread in that some want more bias…but do
I spent time thinking about building a babysitter…the time and expense in coming up with decently quite fans and building a circuit to control speed/noise etc as well as fabrication of the platform…incorporating fans/feet blah blah blah
My first lazy idea was buy some laptop cooling stands and use my extra Apple USB wallworts to power them.
Wasn’t sure about speed control…was hoping I’d find one with more than one speed.
Then I came across this product by accident. It’s exactly what I needed and I couldn’t think of a way to build something as good for less.

So…I threw the dice and bought two.

why?
scavenging 12cm fan(s) from any dead PC PSU and buying piece or two of plywood ( or IKEA whatever) is so much more rewarding

Looks like a winner if it's quiet. So…being sometimes more lazy than greedy…I wanted to share this.

Any time/money saved can be used to build more ZM projects!
😉
... because more toys ...
Chromenuts is winning the contest
Simple black chassis with OLED display will be invisible to She Boss but salvaged PC fans will be the only thing she notices if I try to diy babysitter with my greenhorn skills 😉

LOL…mine Mine MINE!!!Look what I've got.....
Now I have all the unobtanium devices: TH-51s, 2SK180s, and SemiSouth...
I’ve lost track of the various unobtainium I have hoarded due to ZMs genius/madness
Things came to a screeching stop this past week with my tinkering.
We were preparing to welcome a new member to the family
Turns out music is very stimulating for him…I’ve had to make temporary covers for my open baffles to prevent any overly enthusiastic driver damage
Here we are discussing the sonic merits of the Babelfish J2 full IRFP150 version
His name is “Thib”. He is a Blue Heeler/Lab mix rescue that we encountered with his foster on a hike at the local reservoir park.
We fell in love with him immediately and decided we needed to give him a home.
Some re-ordering of priorities have followed 🤣

chromenuts,
Your OBs are Lii Audio I assume.
Im thinking of Liionidas OBs, could you point me where to find some infos on your build (drivers, crossover, listening...)?

They are Crystal 10 I bought used at a very good price.
No real science/design on my part behind the build…or real documentation (sorry)
I use Papa’s B5 (and his science/genius) along with some Hypex amps with the AE woofers.
This just makes it a matter of me being the chef playing with flavors/spices really.
The baffles are approximately the same size as the Liionidas by chance…no baffle gap and big wings like them.
They are fun to play with…I’ve tried several different drivers with them.
