My 2 cents worth what worked for me, First big fans go slower and provide more air, true, But what I found was at a slow speed there noise was a variable low pitch noise although quieter but more irritating and lower frequency which seem to reverb across room a bit like low bass dose, so have 50-80mm running slow enough to keep temperature controlled at the level you want, smaller vans which have a higher pitch sound that can be heard between tracks etc, so I removed metal top and placed a pillow as lid all sound gone as pillow absorbed sound so design a sound absorbing case there a things like what goes under bonnets of car etc that absorbent of engine noise .
Just my 2 cents worth.

You need to use the $3 PWM controller and the low noise adapter (I suspect they are series dropping diodes?) and the Noctua will be silent. Adjust the PWM for low speed and stick the temp probe in the fins and it will speed up if above preset temp according to data sheet. There are two thresholds , 50 and 70C, I think.

Hello,
I seem to have read something in an old post in this thread, about mounting two fans in the refrigerator. Although it is somewhat exaggerated by the type of application and heat to evacuate, the operating time of the fans will be short and running at a few rpm, they still make less noise ... I am not sure either.
Greetings

Vunce, Yes I don't believe Noctua fans are as quite as there rating claims, Ive tested that out with a really old fan out of a old desktop computer nothing fancy about it,but quieter than my Noctua 80mm with the added cable.
If you want it really quite do what Nelson Pass dose use heatsink you cant fault the master, However I think what X is doing is amazing and more appealing to the eye than a bland looking heatsink with 0 db noise.

No pillow needed LOL. That would be a fire hazard!
The Noctua’s are silent. Really - you need to get the right ones though. The ones I use, have all sorts of aerodynamic tricks on the blades and housings. Sort of like F1 CAD design by CFD. It would not surprise me if Noctua’s are a subsidiary of RedBull F1 racing or started by one of their former aerodynamicist as both are in Austria. They have about 30 aerodynamic patents on the fans to make it silent. It’s all wind tunnel research and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
To keep it truly silent, it needs to run at about 50% of its rated speed. So if it can’t cool the load at half speed the get a bigger unit or more fans. But with the PWM controller speed adjustment pot set to low and the dip switch set to not increase speed unless really hot. The claimed dB level on mine are typically 31dB and I believe it. With my ear 5 inches away I cannot tell it is spinning.
Here is one of the ones use:
Noctua NF-A9 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 4-Pin (92mm, Brown) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RUZ059...abc_RY2SERMHFWFHR6949GZD?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Also this one:
Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 4-Pin (120mm, Brown) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C5VG64...abc_AQK6FTY38BKFGCNN62XB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Notice all the ridges on the blades

I just got the box out mine came model NF-A9 PWM without adapter 22.8 db with L.N.A16.3 db so 92mm not 80mm but good specs however the 40mm ones have a lot lower db rating again, would 2 40mm be quieter than1 92 ? in theory yes.
I just went to there website the NF-A4x10 FLX can get as low as "Acoustical noise with L.N.A.12,9 dB(A) "
Now that impressive.
Now that impressive.
NF-S12A Acoustical noise with L.N.A.6,7 dB(A)
Airflow with L.N.A.57,5 m³/h
I need to keep up Fans are getting quieter all the time

The background sound level in my home at night with everyone asleep is 28dBA according to my SPL meter!
Can’t you invert the fan noise and include it in your music content and null the fan noise. Probably never hear them over the air filter setting next to my couch but we’ll see.

Yes you could you could make up a simple bass, mid, high, tone control and connect each of them up to 3 individual traic's that would supply power to 3 fans, as silly as it sounds it would work no music no fan noise.
Almost done
Well I tried to print some decals but the laser printer would not accept the decal paper stock. So I will move these to the living room and begin test

wirewiggler,
Impressive work in getting everything well organized and executed. Like Hugh, I look forward to your listening impressions.
