Thanks dave
I'll keep an eye out on the forum to see when it's ready.
Someone is goinf to have to ask for that onw.

Ah, I stand corrected! My assumptions have led me astray, yet again... I figured that having FR charts that matched so precisely would be some unnecessarily Herculean task that is waaay past the point of diminishing returns. I'm very impressed -- pretty incredible really, and a testament to the quality of MA drivers. As you said, on a more granular scale we may see little variances, but it would be very minor at that point. As far as I know, they're individual sweeps.
I suspect MA would encourage you to do so also since you are uneasy with the quality of the product you have received.
I'm quite not uneasy nor disappointed. I believe it may be my own lack of mastery of written language that may have indicated as such. Rather, I saw that, on paper, there was a mis-match between what was claimed on the MA site and what was delivered (+- .5% match claim, 1.6% delivered). Naturally, I wanted to investigate and gather more data so I could make a more informed decision. Without the knowledge you shared, I'd otherwise be in the dark -- It could be fine, but who knows, there could have been a mistake somewhere. I learned quite a bit from your two posts -- very informative, and hopefully will help some future readers also.
While I'm now reassured about the match that I received, I do think that it would behoove both MA and their customers to change the ".5% tolerance" claim if this isn't a figure that is going to be consistently achievable / deliverable... It's unnecessary cause for confusion, if not disappointment, for those in the same boat as I was (without a more overarching perspective on the scale of the measurements in question)... and, to be fair, these people would technically be correct about the discrepancy.
I have never made a DIY speaker, I am satisfied with my two-way speakers.
From one woodworker to another, those are beautiful! You did a fantastic job on your first set of speakers! I love the stands -- strong, functional, and aesthetically 'cool' and atypical in design.

Thanks,
The woodwork is not my credit, it was made by a local carpenter. I designed the racks and did the final assembly.
Hi there,
I will join the club. Just received my Pair of MAOP 10.2 from Soundimports.
First delivery was just two drivers, different serial numbers, both A,...
returned them (to give them a chance to find the corresponding matching driver for two happy customers.)
They said, they had issues earlier that week with matching.
Started to burn them in.
What music would be nice, not too much bass?
Beatles? Ok, let's go.
Oh no, my beatles collection went through them, now one side is prepared for Drums, the other one for Voice, Grr,... switched sides, another round with the fab four.
Then my Allman brothers recordings, will it now be fine just for 20 minute Versions of "Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post"?
Ok, I created a 5 day long Playlist on my Ipod, this should then do it.
Best regards,
Ulf

I finally finished my mini Onkens for MAOP.
Not sure yet how to paint them. I like the current raw look but some protection is probably required.
The initial sound quality is great, but before comparing them with other speakers, I believe it's essential to give them some time to settle and fully break in.

Very nice job. I'm in the process of building them too. May I ask what material did you use on the inside?
Nice work (i grabbed all the pictures). I just hope you never break a binding post or have to change the internal wiring.

Is it bitum inside?
Good observation Leif. That is not going to help, but it is thin enuff to have little impact.

Yes, it's bitumen (for waterproofing). I also added wool (currently only top, bottom, back) where it's not easy to mount. Maybe I will add wool later L&R also.
It's not a problem to change internal wiring later - I assembled it when box was done.
The screws of the speaker units do not hold well because there is only about half the thickness of the wood behind them. Did you experience the same?
How about changing default screws with something like this:

Non-opposing faces is generally a good default for damping, but follow Dave's guidelines. Large-scale bitumen lagging is counter-productive when using heavily braced void-free ply.* The object of the latter is to raise the box / individual panel Fs and Q to a point where there is little energy available to excite them. Extensively lagging them with bitumen just adds mass without any further increase in rigidity, lowering panel Fs and Q back down into the region where more energy is available.
*Exception are the BBC type thin-wall constructions, where it's part & parcel of the design approach -although ironically often skimped on by some (not all) modern commercial descendants.

You could glue in some small blocks of wood/plywood on the inside of the baffle where the existing screw holes are located, and then just drill the screw holes a bit deeper. The screws of the speaker units do not hold well because there is only about half the thickness of the wood behind them.

It's been a while since I posted anything about my MiniOnkens. Life has a way of getting in the way of these projects.
Here is a photo of their current state. I put on walnut veneer and am finishing them with Tung oil. I have to wait for the oil to dry. This is my first attempt at veneering, there are a few flaws in the veneer.
