Pearl 3 Burning Amp 2023

Main system currently has AT-OC9 Moving Coil
The AT is 1 of the cartridges recently put into rotation, other go to are ADC XLM MKIII and MA 2002e, but have been lusting something that would be a meaningful improvement w/out breaking the bank. One that has piqued my interest is the Hana Umami Blue, just curious for others thoughts/suggestions.

Will likely bring in a Blue in the New Year to play with at work, but it might find its way into my system 😉! Then I'll have an opportunity to put it thru its paces in my P3.

I'd consider the blue if I thought it would be double-the-goodness of the ML (which it might be, IDK)....I love the Hana house sound personally. ML is in constant rotation for now with an OC9, Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC*, and the lowly but incredible for the price AT-VM95SH (yay 6L6!) so I can at least play around with MM—a worthy adventure....

My understanding is that the Umami line is a little less romanticized than the ML, not a criticism just what I've read, will know more later. Yes the $$$ are somewhat off putting, but......

On a slightly different note, ha, Many moons ago I took home a Koetsu Rosewood Signature to pop in my LP12 at the time. The Koetsus were known to have potential issues with the suspension, and this was 1 of those, yet the midrange was so seductive even at very soft levels incredible!

First test power-up picture. All good so far. I made a temporary +/-19VDC supply with two Dell laptop bricks while I wait on power supply parts.

I will finish the build this evening.

I was the trigger happy lucky one :devilr: to get the completed boards from Jim.

That M-A is a giant killer. If you have the original stylus, you have a very valuable electret cartridge there! If it needs any work, Joseph Long rebuilt mine with a sapphire cantilever and fritz geiger 2 diamond, and it is just amazing. Made me put away all but 2 MCs: an Allaerts MC-1b, which remains a reference for me, and a Sony XL-55 pro, a remarkable cartridge at any price. If you ever want to ditch the M-A, you know where to find me…cuz, the M-A is actually junk. Yeah, that’s it, really not good at all. Worthless.

May I ask - what degree of compulsion do you recommend?

I recommend no compulsion. Use them straight off the reel. Works and sounds fantastic.

I’ve built three of these to far… I cannot hear a difference between the K209GR off the reels and the K370BL matched sets.

If you want to match them, by all means do, it absolutely won’t hurt, and might even be a little better.

But it isn’t necessary.

Going through most of the thread, sorry if this has been answered before.
But is there a reason, the Pearl3 is only available as a kit, and not bare PCB´s, or is that an option,
that will be available from the store later??

No. Just PCBs will not be sold in the store.

There may be a PCBs+semiconductors set sold at some time in the future, but the next batch or two will still be pioneer kits.

Temporary setup done.

Oh wow. This is EXCELLENT. Not a hum nor a hiss with sub-optimal power supply and sitting on top of the Iron Pre.

Wayne, you knocked this out of the park! [Insert effusive audiophile praise language regarding resolution, clarity, texture, etc.]
Thanks to the whole team for making this wonderful machine come together for the diyAudio community.

I’m gonna be up late with this warm glow.

I'm really looking for this amp. Back in time I used the Benz Ace L with a Lehmann Black Cube about two years long, but really not very often, and later - because of changes in my equipment - I used MM (Ortofon OM-20) and MI (Nagaoka MP-500).
And it means: the Ace is almost new, with maybe 30-40 playing hours.
So it will be paired with the Pearl 3 - and I fear that I will start collecting LPs again, even if I have almost 200 of them.
I'm exited in advance 😍

I’m ordering parts for this build, have a couple questions-

-Are people using plastic or metal stand offs for the pcbs?

-I have seen some neato coax cable used for signal inside chassis. What exactly are people using in that case? I’d love to order some at the same time as my umbilical to get the most out of shipping!
